It depends on the airline. Short story.
this is a Qantas thread so was hoping someone knew for Qantas specific.
Most airlines - USD100 per leg for the extra luggage item (assuming you have a bike and a suitcase). If you're super careful you can put everything in just 1 bag.
I flew a bag and 2 bikes back from Italy this year. Was charged $100 for the first bike and $200 for the second. So as they say your results may differ.
Generally you should pay for the extra bag before you get to the airport to avoid higher costs, or if you don't often win arguments with airline check in agents.
thanks, I had a look and for excess baggage it sates 14K if i take another 25kg bag / bike. Sounds excessive, will try call them tomorrow and update the thread.
Hey man.
I've not flown quantas but I have flown with a bike many times. 30kg is plenty. Remember you have 7kg of carry on and you can carry your helmet in your hand/helmet bag in addition to that.
Arrive early. Be Nice.
- Bike bags tend to weigh a ton so I have a shop pack my bike into a cardboard box. Have the shop weigh the boxed bike.
- I have them leave the top of the box open so that i can add a bunch of gear. I tape the box up WELLL. I also write my name, address etc on all the box's surfaces.
- Wear your heaviest gear (jackets) onto the plane.
I know this is an old thread but info still seems the same. Is the 7kg additional to the 30 you can check in or is it 23kg check in and 7 carry on?
Does anyone know what it would cost to take the bike and pay for it if you over the checked in allowance?
I've got a Santa Cruz Tallboy 2 (2014/13)
Clear coat is chipping on the top tube - Anyone else had this happen before?
Happened to mine also, they replaced it with a TB 3. I didn't really complain much :-)
Stans race may be expensive but you get what you pay for. Even on road tires. Couldn't get Maxxis Rambler rear tire to hold air with 2 other sealants only Stans Race did the trick, 3 weeks and counting since I had to top up my pressure.
The Specialized Sawtooth is a very good option and looks great. Unfortunately they were too wide for my frame and i went back to my Maxxis Ramblers.
The Ramblers are fast rolling both on and off road and they are extremely light compared to the rest.
Pictures arent great I know but atleast will hep to see tyre and thread.
can anyone on this thread confirm if you have managed to successfully run a 34T Oval chain ring on a Tallboy 3 2017?
Thaba trails Blue route is probably your best bet in JHB
I have the Rapide lever on a Lynne post, works like a charm. R389
Weird how some guys also battled to keep things in. I always ride with 32gi I just couldn't stomach it. Only thing I could keep down was water. Obviously that made me flat, had a couple of Rehidrate but puked around 10-15 times.
First time this has ever happened to me, I made no changes to my drinks. I can see I'm not the only one that battled with this, would be Interesting to know why this happens and how to avoid it.
Managed to keep a coffee and Jaffe down at cp7 and saw me to the end.
If all goes according to plan we should arrive at CP4 just before 18:00 so lights would need to go into 3 and warm / dry clothes in CP4
Thanks for all the advice, looking forward to this one next week.
Thanks guys, so no specifics in Box 2 and 3?
Hey Guys,
Some advice for a first timer on what to pack in the boxes? As i understand it you get 3. CP 2, 3 & 4. I would think lights in CP3 box and warm clothes in 4.
What else should I be looking at packing?
Hi there, Look for DOC Cycling in facebook. Group rides every weekend from Rietvlei Zoo Farm. Different distances to suit you
Good suggestion but I think this Kenilworth is in the Western Cape. Bit far from us although we do have have few Doc riders that side.
If you're brave enough.....
what happens at Thaba stays at Thaba
Have you considered MRP as an option?
For anyone considering the Spaz Power saddle, I'd also suggest the Farr saddle. It's a similar size and shape, but I find it comfier than the Power saddle. It's a lot cheaper too. I have them on my road and MTB bikes and am happy. I've used them for nine hour rides and been comfy (as comfy as you can be after being in the saddle for that long.
I second this, I have both the power (143) and the Farr saddle. I feel like the Farr is a bit more comfortable for me, perhaps it is because it is a little wider.
Might not sort out your issue, have a proper fit done perhaps you might even need inner soles for your shoes.
Finally getting a gravel frame. Thanks Peds, taking his Fuji frame off his hands. It May be another month or 2 until it is ready to roll as I must still source some wheels and shifters. Budget spent for this month.
You will not regret it! Awesome frame.
Hi All,
I have a team ticket to Wine 2 Whales Shiraz on the 2- 4 November 2018 that I would like to swap with someone who has a 2019 Sani2c race ticket. Anyone interested please respond directly to this post.
I would be keen on your 2019 entry.
From the Sani Newsletter:
Spoke to a guy at start of trail on ebike. He said that their time would not be counted so they would start in same batch each day. They were just there to have fun. Not sure If this was the case I dropped a couple of batches after day 1.
Each to their own, they should make their own category like tandem I guess.
At what point should you put your gravel bike back in the garage and just use your mountain bike?
Prototype Niner Magic Carpet Ride full suspension gravel road bike
if I owned this then the answer to your question would be NEVER!
WEIGHT WEENIES!!!!
I know some of you okes out there like to spend R3k to drop 90g off your roadbike, but when a bike weighs +40% of your kid's body weight it should be more importanter!!
if you got the time, please help us put together a list of the best kids bikes around, you will need to weigh the bikes!

true, I looked at emirates to New Zealand but it is like 20hours extra flight through Dubai. So i chose to fly Qantas because it is 16 hours vs 36 hours.
I might just be forced to buy a new bike there
