  1. Thanks for the quick reply. R400 is really inexpensive. Is it strong enough to hold a downhill bike? 16kgs?
  2. I have been looking at purchasing a workshop bike stand for repairs at home, but are only managing to find exorbitantly priced options in LBS - over R4k. There are a couple of good ones on CRC - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/park-tool-home-mechanic-repair-stand-pcs10/rp-prod12702 But does anyone know of better local options. Is there someone who produces them locally? Thanks.
  3. Without an inner, they just a pair of normal shorts ne'? Like a pair of cycling shorts without a pad, or a Western Province supporter with all their teeth, not quite there.
  4. I don't think he is an arrogant douche, his views are mostly spot on. I don't agree with his baggie pant views (all 97kgs of me looks amazing in bib shorts with the nice balance of hair between chest and back), but our roads are rough compared to European roads and our technical skills tend to suck. South African's tend to be too focused on long-distance endurance events on jeep track at best, rather than real bike skills on single track. I was recently in Europe and New Zealand and was completely taken aback by the skill levels there and just their whole approach. Lots of teenage girls and boys (14 or 16 years old), flying off 1-2 meter high drop-offs on world class downhill tracks, easy clearing 8-10 meters before landing on off-camber clay and mud, and then straight into the next one or a monster rock garden. Families with Mom and Dad riding enduro with skill like I have perhaps seen 2-3 guys ride in Stellenbosch. Also, very few 29ers, most 140-160mm 650b or 26er bikes, full face helmets, knee and elbow pads. I thought I was a hard-core Stellenbosch charger. After a day or two I realized I am an off-road cyclist.
  5. Can't believe he managed to win without those wanked out Specialized handle-bars. Weren't they "The Edge" that allowed him to win last year??
  6. Not sure what you doing to your tires. Heaps of guys based out of CT and Stellies ride the Schwalbe's - Hans, Rocket Rons, Racing Ralphs - and no one I know has these tear and leak issues. I have found the WTB to be great too.
  7. I have the 2.35 29ers on my bike and they are absolutely wonderful. They give one so much grip and confidence on downhills, I really don't care if they weigh a bit more or have a bit more rolling resistance on the ups.
  8. I went to a mate's wedding in Taranaki last year. A pretty amazing spot, good surf, insane forests and there are 14 year old girls at Rotorua who ride downhill bikes like Minaar. BUT, insanely expensive. Not only by SA standards, the Kiwis can barely afford a beer themselves. Most of the crowd I stayed with (many CAs etc back from London) brew all their own beer and run massive veggie gardens (with good soil and 9 meters of rain a year it is easy to grow stuff). The main thing that amazed me is the level of hunting. Most guys I met hunt goats, pigs, deer, fish, crayfish etc etc. Before the wedding we quickly popped out and shot 26 goats, stabbed a massive pig in the neck and shot a deer. "All good hey". Then there is the rain....
  9. As mentioned on the other thread, if SAN Parks do improve the number of personal, it will only be during office hours, which is really useless to all of us that have a job. I won't pay for an activity permit, if they don't provide adequate policing when most of us actually undertake the activity.
  10. Indeed. I can see the utility of gravel / cycle-cross bikes if you need to do a few kilometers of jeep track or dirt roads on your predominantly road commute or training ride - e.g. Spec Diverge or Giant TCX, but once it gets rougher than that and you need suspension for corrugations etc. why not buy a hardtail 29er MTB with narrowish tires?
  11. Ja, those Western Province supporters down there are lethal bru...
  12. Not in unfortunately and not paying R2000 to a charity. We do work for many of those charities and i know that at least half, if not 60-70% will go to their staff's salaries and CEO bonuses. Will try again next year.
  13. Amazing country, spent a lot of time riding at Rotorua. I fear though that the video was shot during the 3 hours of the year without rain . Could get quite soggy down there but still amazing landscapes.
  14. But will he win again without his fancy Specialized handlebars, socks and shoes? I thought they were crucial to winning and having the ultimate edge?
  15. If they now produce a cheaper 11-40/42 10-speed cassette, it will be a big issue for Wolf Tooth and co. But steel on the front is fine. Will last for ages.
  16. Hi Bobby, thanks for the update. The fees seem fair for the amount of work. I do though believe that at some point, the management of MTO needs to go on a trip to Whistler and Rotorua and other world class bike parks to see what is possible. There is so much potential for Jonkershoek to be a world class bike park with extensive trails, lifts (even in buses e.g. Rotorua), bike services, a small bike shop selling consumables, and so forth. Knowing forestry economics, they could probably make more off bikes than timber.
  17. I had an Anthem and still have an old 26er XTC and both are rock solid. The xtc has been ridden hard for 12 years, ridden over the Alps with luggage on the back and all and all and it is still fine. I now have a Pyga and it is absolutely solid - feels like a war rig.
  18. This is tricky. I actually think it is not such a bad thing. I have been trying to get into Sani2C and others for years now but you battle because the guys who have done it previously have preferance. Cool, one may want to do it a few times, but after 4-5 times, jeepers, let someone else have a go who has never got in. I thought this may apply to the Argus but the trick is securing people who will turn up and finish. With the Sani example, 98% of the people who get an entry will turn up. With the Argus, take an entry away from someone who has done it 14 times and is definately going to rock up over the first timers, who may or may not arrive, is tricky
  19. The chicks are usually quite voos but hot. Will keep your attention for a while. Perhaps you just need to ride bigger mountains or go down narly trails? Or run off road or through dodgy parts of town? Anything will get boring unless you keep on pushing.
  20. Really? The launch of a paint job?
  21. If you stripped out the water bottles, cages and cables it would look a lot cleaner. Funny launch, no mention of geometry, thru axle on the back or how it would actually handle or feel. Just that they have made a low-rider camel.
  22. The Grand Fondoo 2015 105 won bike of the year and I was keen but these new colours are hideous - a choice between camel kotch yellow or powder baby blue. arghh. The old black and red was cool.
  23. Why do you have so much luggage on your backs?
