  1. I recently switched my MTB pedals onto my roadbike, so that I could walk around in my MTB shoes when acting as start marshal...turns out that the average MTB pedals are a little shorter in the axle than road pedals, with the result that after the ride I was stiff in places where I did not know I had places....but otherwise, if thats what you want to do, then why not. Ask Marius, he raced with MTB pedals...
  2. Hey, there are no weeds on your lawn!
  3. Not sure whether I'm really allowed to post anything in the "training" forum..... Last Sunday I had changed the pedals on my roadbike to MTB pedals; as I was marshalling at the Klein Joostenberg event and it is much easier to walk around in my MTB shoes. Like the previous Sunday I ended up doing the short route, and as we normally start at the back it's pretty much a TT event. Like the Simonsvlei funride the week before I spent around 90% of the ride at above 80% of MHR, but the difference is that this week I have stiffness on the outside of my calf muscles and quads. I checked the length of the pedal axles on my Look road pedals and the Shimano MTB pedals, and noticed that the road pedals were about 4 -5 mm "wider" (I assume the shorter axles on the MTB pedals is to compensate for the wider setup of the cranks?). Guess I'll go back to the road pedals.....just have to walk like a duck when I marshal
  4. There was a discussion about this a while ago I think, check https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=7276&KW=LUFT
  5. and the saddle position is too low...
  6. I think the ciggy has gone out....
  7. Powerlines...I find that when there are power lines along the road (not passing overhead) that some interference occurs. Saw this again yeserday near the start of the Simonsvlei funride when I had a HR of 228 for about 30 seconds....
  8. True, if you have a bunch of idiots riding together they are likely to cause an accident....just after I started cycling, on a few occasions I joined a group for an early morning ride, but these morons would simply not stop at traffic lights/stop streets, which works fine if there is no traffic...one morning they jumped a traffic light as usual and half the group nearly got taken out by a delivery vehicle. Then these morons swore at the driver! But the point about being safer in a group w.r.t visibility etc is a valid one.
  9. Thought about it, but might not make it to that area by the 16th....also, 2 days....might overly much interfere with other activities like drinking beer and lying in the sun. Good point about the flooding though, hadn't thought about that!HomerSimpson2006-11-02 03:35:17
  10. Mostly I do as little as possible, and then I take my salary and run........suffice to say that I'm an academic in the Science Faculty (my goodness, that sounds pompous).
  11. Will be doing mostly LSD rides here around Stellenbosch, spending some time in the local mountains with the MTB, and then maybe spend a week or so at Sedgefield in mid-December (maybe do the 7 passes road by MTB one day?)
  12. Just to report to all those who advised me on how to find the new section of singletrack in Jonkershoek....I followed the advice to the letter...got lost...climbed and climbed and climbed....and eventually realised I was not lost...saw a whole lot of bike tracks going though a muddy patch, followed the tracks and there it was! AWESOME! (Mental note to self...do not ride unknown singletrack after sunset still wearing sweat-spattered sunglasses ). Went straight on at the first sharp right-hander (Meurant...Berms???) and nearly had an attack of vertigo in one little section (see note re sunglasses), but otherwise it was great. Junior only had to wait for about 3 minutes for me at the bottom. Can't wait to do it again. From home to Jonkershoek, do the loop including single track and back home is 37km. Perfect.
  13. OK, just some more info here....WT does the timing, all they do is record the start and finish times of the cyclists. If you start in group M of the long ride and turn off and do the short ride (which will happen EVERY time the long and short routes have a partially shared route), your time will be recorded based on the group you start in, and thus you have the situation of someone apprently clocking a 65km/h average..... Then the PPA checks the results (not WT). The more obvious anomalies are easy to adress, but there are some others where the PPA has to contact the rider..."Are you QUITE sure you finished the whole of long route???" before the person can be DQ'ed. The corrections are then passed to WT who will (normally) update the results pretty quickly. Then, however, you get the situation that happened in Durbanville, where a full 200 cyclists were not "picked up" by the receiver(s). To sort out this obviously took quite a bit of time, and until this had been sorted out, the "other" mistakes were not dealt with. And no, I don't work for the PPA, WT or the Cycle Tour Trust.
  14. Thanks to all! Will spend a lot of time up there in the next few weeks...just need to get this pile of theses off my desk....b**#dy post-graduate students....
  15. OK, all y'all that know Jonkershoek well....just where is the "new" section of single track that Dirtopia developed in Jonkershoek? Please start all descriptions with the term: "when you go through the entrance gate..."
  16. On Sunday morning, a colleague of mine died while out cycling on the Koelenhof Road. He apparently had a heart attack. This has certainly put things back in perspective for me.
  17. Ag we're not that sensitive....the profile that Fatty posted is from the turnoff at the R44 (as it states), the real climb only starts after the traffic light at the bottom, which I guess is at about 2.4-2.5 km on the profile. And the distance is 4.5 km, not 3.8 like I said earlier...3.8 km is where I normally jump over the barriers to do the descent on the "old" road....
  18. Van die robot aan die onderkant tot bo 3.8 km (afhangend van watter punt jy as bo beskou kan dit tot 4.1 km rek). FanieFiets het 'n jaar of wat terug die profile gepos op die hub. HomerSimpson2006-10-27 07:26:34
