  1. Or you could just ride a few sections of uphill single track and some steep rocky/muddy/sandy climbs on your MTB a couple of times a week this winter (it is proven fact that rain does not affect you when you are on a MTB) and you will do all the leg strengthening training you need without getting near the gym...OK, you'll miss out on the leotard ladies... Think I'll head to JHK after work...tracks should be good after the rain....mmmmmm
  2. And something completely different....on Monday I came across a group of (mostly) teenage black kids in Nedbank cycling kit, all on basic yellow "MTBs" (no quick release skewers anywhere, no shocks, just basic bicyles). Now all these kids had helmets on, and STOPPED AT EVERY TRAFFIC LIGHT/STOP street between the Jamestown turnoff on the R44 and their "rest stop"at the Shell garage at the bottom end of Dorp Street in Stellenbosch. Dunno who is responsible for putting these kids on the road, or teaching them road rules but a BIG
  3. Interesting question. My opinion in this matter is that there is no reason to replace a helmet after three years (as long as it has not been involved in a crash, obviously). The reasoning is as follows: the foam is mostly not directly exposed to UV light, which is the only possible source of initiating breakdown. It does not matter if the outer plastic degrades, as this contributes nothing to the impact resistance of the helmet. Furthermore, the additives that guard against the onset of UV degradation should be effective for a period of at least 10 years. So, in my opnion, the three year replacement theory is a sales gimmick.
  4. I did the longer route, anough ascent for me, that ride was pretty well marshalled. Saw a couple of people cheating by skipping one of the ST sections. I agree that the ride up the tar road is unfortunate, route used to go up on the south side of the river along farmlands all the way, but new landowners are refusing access (basically because of some people riding there without permission a few years ago). The ride was originally just a fun fundraiser for the local church, I think they are bit bemused by the number and quality of riders now turning up for the ride. Send feedback to the organizers, they seem to take that into consideration for the next year's event. While on the topic, does anybody know how the guy is that wiped out on the descent on the south side of the valley. Spent about ten minutes trying to get help organised (no cellphone signal there), looked a bit grim. The ambulance only arrived at the reserve when I exited about 35 minutes after leaving the scene of the crash.
  5. Exactly. Well summarized Chrispy.
  6. I trust he was not actually on the N2...if he cycled between Stellenbosch and Muizenberg that must have been on the "coast road" which passes by Kayelitsha...I hesitate to take that road by car during daylight. Sorry to hear about the incident, but that is an extremely dangerous piece of road.
  7. As a spectator I enjoyed it thoroughly, BUT I would also have hated riding some of those sections in the dark...particularly the section through the parking area and turning into the stadium.
  8. More to the point...sorry about that, the weather at Cape Point is forecast to be the following: Forecast: Sunday, 11 March 2007 Min: 19?CMax: 23?Chttp://www.weathersa.co.za/weathersa/images/icons/none.gifWeather: Partly cloudy, cloudy in eveningWind: fresh south-westerlySunrise: 06:41Sunset: 19:10Moonrise: 23:09Moonset: 13:36Moonphase: Last Quarter
  9. And just because Popeye asked..... The word is that the seeding will be done every year from now on. Apart from the fact that people can become "blerrie sleg" and still remain in a seeded group; right now the numbers issued in July of 2005 say "Valid until July 2007" (or some such), which means people who did not renew their membership in 2006 can still ride with their (apparently) legal PPA numbers.HomerSimpson2007-02-26 06:39:08
  10. Sterkte...en "don't let the bastards get you down!"
  11. I don't race.. I ride. but yes. And It's not going to rain tomorrow.... It's not going to rain tomorrow.... It's not going to rain tomorrow....
  12. It's not going to rain tomorrow.... It's not going to rain tomorrow.... It's not going to rain tomorrow.... It's not going to rain tomorrow.... It's not going to rain tomorrow....(power of positive posting)
  13. Used to swim, but doing laps in a 50m pool has to be the most boring form of excersize on the planet. Used to do 1 000 to 1 500 m twice a week, stopped because I could not stand the view any longer....bottom of the pool, blurred sky, bottom of the pool, blurred sky on the other side...
  14. Weird. Much faster qualifying time than for last year's race, but dropped down a group (not that it really matters at the blunt end of the ride..)
  15. Looks like something I need....
  16. Yeah, saw them (bout 3 different groups) on the way to Somerset West on Saturday late morning, followed by 5 Rabobank riders, then the T-Mobile squad near the Steynsrus turnoff, and then 4-5 guys (helmetless) in bright blue kit...anybody know who this might be?
  17. Believe me, this has been discussed in some length, but Donkey is right; with the elites etc is kinda hard to find a marshal to ride with them...; in the spring league we had a marshal on a motorbike "policing" the ride up at the sharp end..seemed to work quite well. You must also remember that the marshals are all volunteers, and as we are normally all involved at the start, we therefore leave last. To get marshals in all the groups would mean getting more marshals, and with the ablility, to ride with C, D, E etc etc. So, all volunteers are welcome! If you want to give something back...only 6 rides per season....anybody?
  18. I believe there might be a fallout about this issue......
  19. This is shocking news. Condolences to the family and to all who knew him well.
  20. Worst Hubber Crash Willpower
  21. So to summarize....the fact that I have no natural talent, hardly ever train and have the mental toughness of a doormat might be influencing my performance on the bike??? Whoda thunk it.
