  1. For Hell and Back I got my fat ass up there on 32/32 with some effort but never considered walking. Some short sections at 18% if I remember correctly. You should be fine 34/32.
  2. I will be there on my Peugeot Mirage
  3. Popcorn
  4. Will check my (wife's) dates. Could work. AARGH
  5. I know. I have done a few doubles (and bonked out on one halfway up the big climb). I am doing Nove Colli in May and should (theoretically) be doing a four lapper before then. Problem is I cannot face that starting hill (front gate) for a 3rd time. I end up chickening out every time... Clearly I am not a climber. Maybe I should try it with you once. I do around 2:15 cattle grid to cattle grid for a single lap and around 2:30 for each of a double.
  6. Best post of the whole thread
  7. LÉtape South-Africa also holds good promise.
  8. I cycled from the start to Houtbay and back this pm (like many others). My observations and thoughts after the ride: 1. The devestation in Houtbay is obvious and heartbreaking 2. The rubble in the road that I saw in Houtbay was after the turnoff to Suikerbossie 3. I had to dismount once on my way past Oudekraal on my way back due to a sudden gust of wind. My opinion: Despite more than adequate communication from the organizers - my Dad (as an example) was adamant to ride. He does not have the skill to deal with these conditions. My father is a reasonable example of the type of cyclist that should be protected from him- or herself. Thus the decision is more vindicated as far as weather is concerned in my opinion. BUT: The great tragedy of the shack fires in Houtbay could not have been a major consideration in the decision-making in this matter. It is a human tragedy of epic proportion - surely matched by other disasters elsewhere in our tragic country but no less or more important than any other instances of human suffering at any one moment. Shack fires in Alexandria is just as heart wrenching as any other but somehow it appears just not to be as serious as a fire in Houtbay over CTCT weekend in the opinion of the (Cape Town) cycling public. I will gladly donate to a social cause for the support of the poor people involved in this disaster (as we did for firefighters two years ago). It just does not imply any disrespect or apathy if I actually ride my bike in the vicinity of the disaster. Let us just admit that the REAL two issues were: 1. The wind - it was a true and valid issue that may or may not be a issue in the near future again. It is an integral part of this race and most people can understand that, and will individually decide whether they are prepared to take the risk iro the Cape Doc or not when entering again. 2. Politics. This was the stated initial interference with this race. The importance is massive. The OMTOM is imminent. Future events (not only sporting) are all relevant. By accepting or stating that it is reasonable /understandable to do so and by defending such disruptive behavior it implies such an individual is happy to sacrifice all future mass participation events in this region. The reality is that as long as any number of individuals (large or small) is prepared to disrupt the functions of normal society, such as sporting gatherings, no matter what the long-term outcomes are, this event is at peril. We all know that our elected leaders are to blame much more for money wasting and squandering of resources than a small band of cyclists hoping to cycle around the Peninsula. My Point: By painting this with the PR brush (everything but reality) we are fooling ourselves. Today it was mainly the wind - fair enough, but initially (and ultimately) the "leaders" held sport in the WC at ransom. Cape Town and the Western Cape will have to decide whether the CTCT, OMTOM and many other events are purely irritants or generators of employment and income of around R500 million per event. If the events are to continue it is obvious that some communication and education is needed. The Golden Goose comes to mind....
  9. No matter how valid the other reasons for cancelation are - the initial disruption (shortening) was of political nature. The OMTOM will be next and thereafter the CTCT will be bribing any number of groups for the years to come. Liberal/humanitarian logic is one thing but anarchy and preventing freedom of movement is another. Minimizing the importance of the event in terms of what it means to others is just plain arrogance. Some people have saved hard, trained hard and may not be alive for another ride. Some cannot afford it again. Yes there are poor people out there - can anyone expect a group of cyclists to correct the massive social injustices?
  10. Last night I had a long frustrating call to the Hotel where I am supposed to stay. I booked and paid 4months ago. I have the reference numbers. Still they don't know of me and my Dad coming! The guy said to me I must come there today and see if they can sort it out.... The little joys of being on a tight schedule and 1500km away. Hoping not to do a Frank Gallagher impersonation on the streets tonight. The Old Man is already as tense as a string about the whole thing. We will be starting just before 0800 and hoping to go around 4h45. Dale: I thought there can be only one - Assos.
  11. After considering the arguments (mostly from carbon29er and Pure Savage) I now admit that this is a reasonable option. Several loose ends remain. The current SA Champ is u/23 so it will be imperative that the u/23 women are never made to start seperate. Also the timing of the announcement is awkward - some ladies I know well chose not to go due to the previous setup (one is a serious podium contender). All considered I hope it makes for faster/ aggresive racing and not a situation where everyone is just waiting for someone to do the hard graft.
  12. I have never physically met Barry but he still influenced my style of thinking and interaction on the Hub. He would be the voice of reason when the Sheriff kicked the hornets nest. He would have proper facts when wild allegations re doping was made. He respected his openness on private matters and enjoyed his support for local spots. His love for animals immediately put him on the good guys team. RIP Fellow Hubber
  13. If I Remember correctly a Hubber once made a public bet that involved buying beers for all hubbers at the W2W (and promptly lost the bet). Not wanting to fall in the same trap I will wager nothing, but I will not be surprised at all if the above scenario does play out.
  14. I predict an "extremely tactical race" for the ladies (at least until the first men catch up).
  15. Not only did you not have a tag but you were WAY off course...
  16. How does weather affect an expo that is indoors? Or is this cape speak for : "we are not ready yet"?
  17. What a difference in little personal dramas around this nice ride of ours each year brings! Everytime it reminds of the pressure on pro riders to peak for one race/tour. Two years ago i was really fit and strong. I had a 1B start and was paid up for the double lap. Alas, at 08;00 I was back in the hotel having a shower. A really expensive and frustrating morning. Last year I wasn't as fit but the weather Gods smiled on us and I got my 3 hour and second laps done in one go. I helped some ladies and pushed the Rhino up Suikerbossie. Priceless. This year I am vrotsiek and still getting worse. I would most likely not have started but my 76 year old dad has been training his arse off to do his first "Argus" and I can never drop him. He will need some guidance and help. I am hoping to get him around in about 4:45. Rather than talking about the inevitable wind - give us a bit more of your personal stories. Its more fun to know about the personal battles.
  18. Be very awake in a group from the end of the highway up to Simonstown. All kinds of surprises ito roadworks , sudden shoulders and roads suddenly narrowing. BELT it down Misty Cliffs - it is the biggest thrill of the day.
  19. No real wow-factor.
  20. I also think it will be worthwhile to know who was banned and the most common reason for deleting posts.
  21. Beautiful pics. I would love to have printed enlargements of one or two. Do you take orders?
  22. Siena and Spartacus - two of my favourite things in life. Great news.
  23. I still wonder why the pharmacist wasnt charged with gross negligence. If he contaminates meds and causes a life threatening allergy is professional negligence.
