  1. Chris Martin rode it himself. Pretty cool IMO
  2. I could wheelie all the way It would be my preferred mode of transport ... unfortunately not the most efficient I really like the back-route. I much prefer having to deal with as little traffic as possible, and it also cuts across the other route mentioned. Thanks for the extra info.
  3. Thanks for the detailed info LOUDMAC Appreciate it. Nice route. Question, or rather 2. How far is it to the Common and how long does it take you to get there. oh yes... and what sort of time in the mornings do you ride ? Just want an idea of the amount of traffic.
  4. Know most of those. A fair cross-section of music. Interesting that you have Dismember along with the likes of Monster Magnet. Like both of them btw
  5. Onslaught Six Feet Under Bolt Thrower Katatonia Kyuss My Silent Wake Dinosaur Jr The Lucifer Principle Vader Wall of Sleep All on my phone at the moment which I use when I do any road riding. As for actually riding with headphones ... I'm usually riding along the sidewalks. I stay off main roads as far as I can help it. No headphones however when riding in the forest, don't need any
  6. Thanks man, although I'm not overly keen on riding on the M5 and it is illegal AFAIK. I'm quite happy with some back roads that have less traffic on them.
  7. Good advice When you start feeling a little more confident, just let go and go for it. And good luck ... it is a lot easier than it initially feels like.
  8. I'm considering starting a commute to work on a few days a week. I really need to get my fitness up and weight down, and due to work/home circumstances am finding it very difficult to find time otherwise to put in the long exercise hours needed. I live in the deep-ish South, Muizenberg way, and need to get to Rondebosch/Rosebank. What is the safest route to travel while still trying to maintain the fastest way of getting there? I'm slow and I haven't ridden a bicycle in around 5 years or so. My unicycle is not fast enough to make it an economical trip, particularly with not being able to free-wheel either .... so it has to be my trusty and rusty mountain bike that has been hanging up for the last 5 years. Any advice/tips ? Thanks, cheers
  9. The Alt-X-Sports Expo is happening this weekend at the Riversands farm. Part of the expo will include a 24 hour Mountain Unicycling Challenge. A team of unicyclists will attempt to ride a course for 24 hours over Saturday, that evening, and Sunday morning. There will be at least 2 riders on the course for the whole 24 hours. If you're headed out to the Expo, go check the guys out and give them a little support. They are doing it to raise some money for charity. Check out the CounterBalance post about Expo event.
  10. Don't worry .. I've done the search for you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicycle
  11. Congrats on finishing the race Z, nice one :-) Thanks for your honest and brilliant reply to the situation. I take my hat off (no taking the hat off emoticons I'm afraid, so a thumbs up is it) :-) Good luck for the next one !
  12. I love clowns ... in my opinion, a great clown can totally steal the show. The best clowns I've seen didn't even need to say a single word of english. In fact the one spoke total gibberish the entire time, and the other made sound effects for what he was doing ... amazing really ... I was impressed and still am as I remember those acts out of any other I saw on the respective shows. As far as I know the guy you're talking about did take things up with the race organisers beforehand. There was no surprise that he was riding a Unicycle. Perhaps you should query things with the race organisers. Lastly, why so sore about racing against a guy on a unicycle even if he did start before you. He's clearly not racing against you. Kinda like the apple orange thing.
  13. hahahaha.. like having to wash dishes Never heard that analogy before ... that's actually quite funny It is like riding a bicycle ... like riding a mountain bicycle ... awesome .. isn't it ... only better IMO, but that's just me
  14. I suspect that the Race Organisers knew exactly where they were seeding a Unicyclist. Unicyclists are not inconspicuous ... clearly .... Saying that the guy cheated by being ahead of you is a stretch. If you're racing for money where your lively hood depends on it, then you should train harder and be at the start of the groups. If not, then race and enjoy the ride.
  15. Nope, that was a guy by the name of Christo Coetzer. He features on the FEAT SA website, http://www.featsa.co.za/2011/05/christo-circumnavigates-jamaica/
  16. From my experience in doing MTB races, we've almost always started at the back. We have started right in the front on the Mast Challenge, but then again it's jeep track all the way up so we get passed reasonably quickly on the way up ... well I do in any event. Buddies of mine on their Uni's beat quite a lot of MTB'ers to the top of the Mast If you're in a race and have done more than a couple km's and you come across a much slower rider, be it a Unicyclist or a bicyclist, then the race routes have probably been merged in which case you need to take your issues up with the race planners and organisers. If the dude mouthed off at you, then I agree have an issue with him. It's just plain rude no matter who you are. I would suspect though that there may have been some provocation of sorts, but I could be wrong. Uni's are starting to take part in more MTB and road races. Why not ? I think it's great. We're doing a wheeled sport that we absolutely love. Think about it ... we're doing a fringe sport that is gaining some popularity and exposure. Given the opportunity ... what would you do ? I love the fact that I can ride a unicycle, and I love it even more that I can ride it off road and do some seriously cool terrain and drops on it. It's an adrenaline rush of note The circus comments and "You've lost a wheel" jokes ... well ... let me start by saying that you are *SO* original .... no really I mean it .... no, actually I don't. Like a tall guy has never heard, "So how is the weather up there?". I love the circus. It's a wonderful place. I come from a circus family so telling me that I should be in a circus is felt with some pride ... Thanks So see you guys on the trails
  17. Unicycles are starting to become more prevalent in MTB races. I've done a few already including the Argus MTB. We usually approach the race organisers beforehand to get "permission" to take part. We have not been refused entry so far, as far as I know. So to the OP, a unicycle was in front of you on some single track. What do you usually do when trying to pass someone going down some single track ? Try bomb past and then blame the rider for your lack of experience when things go wrong ? Clearly the guy on the Uni was working harder than you just keeping it on the trail. I'd have to agree with Turbo with all his responses to you in an earlier post.
  18. So Surly have released an even bigger/wider tyre and rim on a MTB called the Moonlander. http://www.surlybikes.com/blog/ I've ridden a Unicycle with a Surly Larry 3.8 inch tyre which is an absolute monster.... but now you can get a 4.7 inch !!! So if you want to go dune riding or want some massive cushioning when taking drops then this would probably be the beast to use.
  19. Very cool footage ... makes me want to head out there now and go for a ride. Haven't been down the Bridal Path for a while, really need to hit it again
  20. I must say that most riders I encounter on my way down trails usually move out of the way or stop to let me go through, and I always thank them when they do. It's not that I force my way through, they genuinely just let me through. I do stop and pull over for riders on their way up so it's a 2 way street/trail As Pain says, it's about common courtesy.
  21. Yeah, great trail for a Uni In terms of stuff for trails that really tests Uni skills .... Tech downhill terrain Short steep uphill/downhill, tight turns, negotiating obstacles while having to make turns, skinnies, drops, small gaps (don't have the momentum you guys have so can't make huge gaps). Your new DH trail has a lot of these things in already. Parts of Boulders, the rock and roots gardens, are perfect for Uni. The trail that branches off Boulders, or rather goes straight down when you turn left into Boulders is another great trail for Uni. Drops and twists close to each other. There are more examples in all the trails in Tokai that suit Uni very well, but it would be great to have some trails that are designed with Uni skills in mind
  22. Wanted to say a *MASSIVE* thanks to all the guys that worked on the new DH trail. I did not contribute to the building, but I did get to ride it over the weekend ... and I am very impressed. Well done guys !! In terms of a Mountain Uni trail for me it's amazing. It really offers me a lot in terms of riding and some skill tests. Keen to ride it when it has packed a little harder because the steeper sections near the bottom are quite tricky because of the lose soil I loved the trail, and the 2 of us that rode it on Saturday were smiling all the way down. Was chatting to one of the guys that helped build the trail about the possibility of doing some specific Mountain Uni pieces in trails, which we are very keen on. Something that tests Uni skills and could be something quite different for anyone on 2 wheels.
  23. She Wants Revenge - True Romance
  24. Definitely a An awesome place to ride with so much to offer all skill levels
