  1. Its funny you should say this. I already have a dropper post, and have already made the switch to flat pedals and getting a shorter stem is what started this whole investigation into a new bike. Because of Giants ridiculous OD2 "standard" that they're pushing, its going to cost me close to R1k just to try a shorter stem. For R4k I could get a adjustable revelation and a new shorter stem and then still have my old fork and stem to sell. But this would be a further investment into 29er parts So, I'm just playing with the idea of switching to a smaller wheel, even 26er would work, only that the Pyga I like is not available in 26er So yes, I'm not trying to debate the benefits and drawbacks of wheel sizes. I'm kinda asking if smaller wheeled bikes are tons more playful/fun, or is there only a marginal difference
  2. Who are Cliff and Mark? Do they sell Pyga's? awesme: You have a 650 Pyga right? Are you still loving it? or will you be selling it at a ridiculously marked down price some time soon?
  3. Hey all, Im currently riding a Giant Trance 29er and I'm getting a lot more comfortable on the downhills and having a lot of fun with it, even started going to G-Spot and doing some of the medium sized jumps there. I have not ridden a smaller wheel size so I have no experience to draw from, but when you read about wheels the general consensus is that the smaller wheeled bikes are more fun/playful/maneuverable. Would it be a worth while switch to go with something like the Pyga 650b? I don't do any racing, and I suspect that there's not much in it between the wheel sizes when doing long distance slowish rides. What do you think? I'm going to try get hold of a demo bike, but it will be hard to draw any conclusions from one ride.
  4. iTunes just finished downloading...

    mtb rims

WTB i23... .... I got mine only a few rides ago, so far they're great
  6. I do agree with what you're saying.. and you're not disagreeing with me. I'm questioning the fact that many people believe that the weight you save on a wheel is far more important than weight saved elsewhere on the bike. In your scenario, loosing 500grams anywhere else on the bike would result in the same improvement. I also went from 2.2kg Giant wheels to 1.4kg AC race and felt no huge difference in my climbing ability (although there may have been a theoretical improvement). So if I kept my heavy wheels, but dropped the weight elsewhere, we would still be on an even playing field
  7. I have always wondered about this "wheel weight is the most important" thing. As far as I can see, heavier wheels have advantages. i.e. Momentum. When up to speed, the heavier wheel should roll better/easier/faster than the lighter wheel? If you take this into account, the difference between wheel weight (being a part that rotates), and normal bike weight (parts that don't rotate), should be insignificant... Anyways, I went from riding heavy wheels, to light wheels, and back to heavy wheels just recently, and I think I prefer the heavier wheels. I feel the loss in momentum when switching to light wheels much more than I feel the benefit in acceleration.
  8. Its not motorists fault. Accidents happen all the time. Cyclists need to realise that riding on the road, amongst cars, is dangerous. Probably for similar reasons that we're not allowed cycling on freeways. You've got a same chance of being in an accident when out in your car as you do when out on the bicycle, the only difference is that you will get seriously hurt when on your bicycle.
  9. Thanks man ... now if only I didn't have to work this week.
  10. They were quite a bit cheaper. R595 per rim for the WTB's. I was quoted R1k per rim for flows.
  11. Awesome... I've been out for 4 rides with them and I'm really enjoying them! Was a bit nervous getting these instead of ztr's, but so far so good
  12. I shopped around a bit for deals... Rims from revolution cycles, hubs from cwc... And then had lance from epic bike shop build them up for me... Will definitely go back there if I ever do another set of wheels
  13. Ss I have been out for a few rides with the new wheels now. Totally quiet (no creaking), and they feel a ton more solid under me.... The hope hubs are not as annoying as I thought they'd be. But they do seem to be a little louder now than my first ride.... anyways, just an update
  14. New wheels... WTB i23 on Hope's
  15. Thats 5 more steps than I've ever had to perform on shimano's. Seriously though, I bought a bike with elixir 3's on after using cheap shimano's. Not even a month later I had to upgrade the brakes on a brand new bike cos the avids were rubbish.
  16. So a set of WTB i23 rims and Hope Hubs are with Lance at Epic Bike Shop to be built. Will report back hopefully next week with results
  17. Lol, I had no idea people were so sensitive about this. I dont really see the point. Why cant everyone just wear whatever they want to wear? I doubt that any actual world champs care who is wearing a fake jersey or not?
  18. I ended up buying the i23's Going to have to give the hopes a try as well... I have read around and almost every thread I read everyone recommends hope. So, if it ends up too noisy, I will have to swop it out later.
  19. Chris king hubs will be pushing it a little out of budget What other hubs are comparable to hope? And where is the best place to source ZTR Flow's or WTB i23 rims? Anyone have any ideas? Would like to compare the price...
  20. Which model crossmax? I see a couple of variations SLR, ST, SX... Trying to narrow it down a bit before I start the long process of looking for prices in SA...
  21. When reading around, I have seen a lot of mention of wtb i19 and i23. Maybe I should read a bit more on these. As for hub noise, my brother rides with stans hubs and they sounds quite noisy, I have heard that the hopes are quite a bit noisier, is this right?
  22. Hi All, So I recently bought a set of American classic race 29 wheels but I would like to get rid of them in favour of something stronger. Currently they're coming out of true and creaking a lot. I would like to get something that I can mostly put on and forget about. I dont do downhill or anything like that, but I would like to try very small jumps/drop offs when I encounter them as well as being able to close my eyes and smash blindly through rocky rough terrain without worrying about my wheels breaking, buckling or dinging. So... here is the part that everyone if going to love. I would like to avoid hope hubs, from reading around, it seems like they're just too noisy. What other hub options are there if I were to go with something like a flow/arch ex rim? Other than that, are there any factory build wheelsets I could consider? any other rim hub combos I should consider? What do you have that can take a 90 odd kg rider?
  23. I think they are run by CItyRock in cpt. He says that their stock is 6 months out at this point... but that could be delayed because 510 keeps delaying. I just went through this whole thing and ended up just ordering through CRC. Got nailed badly with import duties, but yeah, I will live.
