  1. I thought last year was only a 'break' from the normal / previous routes...seems like they're sticking with this format, though...a pity, IMHO.
  2. If the weather holds, I'm likely to pitch up - but will just slink away on a side street somewhere if it looks as if I can't keep up!
  3. jinne this looks lekker! I'm pretty sure I'm too slow (and on MTB) to keep up with the tail-enders though...if I have to bail en route, what would the best options be? I won't mind bailing and then meandering back (might bring a mate along), but quite keen to do Chappies by moonlight, though... (and no, I'm not one of those saying I'm undertrained and unfit - I'm a 5-hour Argus type, so would very possibly not make cut-off...)
  4. Thanks Andreas Bought it from our friends in Malmesbury...last 2018 model (the budget would not allow for 2019!). I've not had a chance to take it out properly yet - just did a quick G-spot run on Friday after work before the weekend's rain set in... Did feel as though I struggled a little bit more uphill, but must also still get used to the gear ratios - and a soft tail! Will just need to get a bit stronger... Downhill - well the little taste I had, was simply LOVELY! Awesome grip and handling...
  5. Took the plunge: Scott Genius 750 plus
  6. How much distance will he have to cover? My gut says that's where the crux lies... Choosing a hill that is steep enough to get you over the height-line in the shortest distance possible, BUT taking into account power required / possible, minimising time 'wasted' on turnarounds etc. But then again shorter laps will provide more recovery time, resulting in average faster pace up the hills? Would be interesting to see some 'reverse' Enduro style measuring for Everesting attempts, i.e. only counting the time spent actually pedaling uphill?
  7. I'm also wanting to upgrade, and face the same dilemma. The Scott Genius (or Scott Spark 710 plus - but $$$$) seems, on paper, to hit the spot...more travel and slacker geometry, but the option to take both 27.5 wheels AND 29...so with 1 bike and 2 sets of wheels, I could potentially have the best of both worlds? How are you finding the bb clearance / pedal strikes? This seems to be an issue flagged on some forums...
  8. And there was I, thinking it was always n+1...
  9. My first car was one of these, called Smokey. I bought her 3rd hand or so already. Sy't water, olie en petrol gebruik - in daai volgorde...
  10. Anyone else been lucky enough to spot a real one? Just wondering how common it is:
  11. I feel for you. As HdB said, the seven hours cut-off is a stated rule - BUT the race organisers have flexibility to push it out... It seems as though the cut-off time was raised to 8:00 in 2009 (looking at Racetec). Perhaps they will still make some allowance for the wind and rain? Edit: 2010 seems to have been pushed out to 7:30 - this year's wind was (to my mind) quite similar. Perhaps a case to be made?
  12. My OCD just wants to close that gap where the Jh/Js/Ju bunches sits, and see the full picture of the tornado leaning towards the right...
  13. My dot is sadly one of the outliers to the right - I can see exactly which one! Irony is, I would probably have done a better time, had I dropped back a good 10-15 start groups or so - as it was, I cycled solo all the way and was already knackered getting into Simon's Town... Was seeded way out of my league (and no, I did not cheat, but got a outlier seeding based on an MTB event...)
  14. I think they were the groups that pulled the buggies...
  15. The route seems to still follow quite a bit of the rivercourse, and this is the part that was very sandy - could the organisers possibly confirm? Also not in the mood for a slog through sand, but have supported this event in the past. I somehow always feel better about an event where the PPA IS involved - will racetec at least be doing the timing?
  16. Just curious - any prize / award for the first female in over the full course? See she did a 3:09.
  17. And yet some of them managed to come in well under 4 hours...respect!
  18. They were in 2F fwiw.
  19. I started in 2F. Before hospital bend, a Ryan from 3E and another rider with 3F on his back, passed me. How did they get into 2F or 2G starting pens??? Also saw a 'Sharon' with a beard and beenhare. And countless riders wearing earphones - are they just plain stupid? Agree that checking should be more strict - if people see that others are getting away with it, next year more people will try their luck.
  20. For you, maybe. The real heroes today were the backenders that braved the wind despite perhaps not being fit enough. The McGregor development riders riding with single speed MTBs and finishing - not in 4 hours. The guys towing buggies. The first-timers. The dad and his young daughter / son on the back of a tandem. The ouballie doing his 30th and struggling up Suikerbossie.
  21. I found it quite useful in the past, as they seem to account for variances in speed over different sectors - but then again, I'm in the cruising end of the field, so maybe that makes a difference!
  22. anyone got a link to the 'split time calculator'? Edit - found it on their website.
  23. All this talk about headwind out and tailwind back - I cycled the 2009 event, and the only thing that kept me going to Simon's Town was the thought that the wind would surely be at our backs once we're over Smits...except it wasn't...
  24. Anybody know if the Magnificent Seven are all riding this year?
