  1. But surely that would require a whole new shifting system up front? And what would stop you then from adding (*gasp*) another ring up front? Following on the theme, you could call it "3x". I'm sure it will be very expensive / exclusive, though - you'll never be able to do this on entry level bikes...
  2. Nike man, julle ouens...stoppit already!
  3. I thought there were only a few minutes between groups?
  4. Given (a) my spectacular lack of fitness (and no amount of scooting up Helshoogte once a day is going to fix this in time), and (b) my totally undeserved good seeding, based on a short-ish MTB event, I've been forced to reconsider my position on the above. I'll gladly accept ANY help up ANY hill. Will it help if I put a sign with my Hub name and a big hand on my back? Large enough for any shorties to see, of course...
  5. Was looking for a cheap 2nd hand road bike to use for CTCT (and getting into road triathlons). Realised that the very skinny wheels and body position (brake levers on drop bars) are probably not going to work for me, and that I'll probably need something with flat handlebar, a bit wider tires, and disk brakes. So I have a few questions: 1. My very first (and only) road bike from way back when, had drop handlebars, but had brake levers both on the curves (as is standard) and on the flat portion of the bar. Does one still get these? 2. Gravel bikes are still relatively pricey, and converting the handlebars / brake levers would also add to the bill. Not that many going 2nd hand. Given that I was only looking to pick up a cheap road bike for the odd road event - any suggestions on affordable / easy ways forward? I'm basically just not wanting to put slicks on my (tubeless) MTB every time I do a road event... Any advice appreciated!
  6. Lovely as that pass is, it is simply NOT safe. Especially with the African Valley squatters in close proximity - which also rendered Bothmaskop unsafe. Going up you won't have enough speed to take evasive action, going down, a stick in spokes might be lethal. This road has lots of hiding places for those meaning harm, and hardly any overlooking or cars passing by. There's been many examples throughout the Cape Peninsula and elsewhere of attacks on cyclists and hikers who were attacked while out in a group. My opinion - just too risky.
  7. Same problem here - love the early start time, but will be waaaaaaay out of my league. My seeding also based on an outlier MTB event...
  8. Said friend should maybe have paid more attention to the teacher's words than to her bum, it seems...
  9. Can I send you a pic of my back so you know who to look out for for a push up Suikerbossie, please?
  10. 'I've been in that shop a few times getting no assistance whatsoever. Left everything on the counter and walked out.' Try being female - it's as if you don't even exist. Given up on them and a few other northern suburbs bikeshops for that reason.
  11. They weren't joking about the thorns in the overflow parking area...this was literally putting one foot down out of the car...
  12. Should the answer to the OP's headline not be:
  13. About two or so years ago, there was exactly the same observation - from the road guys. Seems that they worked hard to address that, but that many of the old faithful MTB events have fallen away... I've also noted that some of the MTB events on the calendar which previously had PPA involved, are now happening without their involvement - a question of expenses perhaps? Personally, I prefer doing events which have the PPA involved, as they are usually much better organised etc.
  14. If she's on MTB - put it in granny and keep going. If on a road bike - take off the road shoes and walk it out on socks...
  15. I drive from Stellenbosch to Kraaifontein and back every day. I've considered cycling to work but (a) no shower / changing facilities at work, and (b) could not yet find a safe route. Kromme Rhee is not an option - no shoulder whatsoever, and has become extremely busy. With Bottelary, my main question would be how you get onto the Bottelary from Durbanville? The link through Wallacedene is simply not an option (for me). Another option would be the Lichtenburg Road up to 'fruitseller's corner', then R304 all the way - but this passes Fisantekraal, which has had its fair share of issues.
  16. If your theory holds, I'll be very happy with my start time (but perhaps way out of my depth!) O well, still way more scientifically accurate than any weather prediction at this time!
  17. Done it with knobbies and slicks, and they do help a little bit. But: Slicks on a 29er just looks wrong. The mess and / or cost of making 2 swaps to your tubeless set-up...Am now rather looking for a cheapish road bike.
  18. Thanks Was hoping to get an idea of indexes along the 3ish starting groups... My aspirations are more modest - hoping to start before 8am this year!
  19. Anybody got an idea how the indexes relate to the start groups? Roughly?
  20. If I could manage to lose THAT much weight, I seriously wouldn't mind having BOTH wheels coming off the ground!
