  1. Poor OP... 80-odd comments, and only a handful relevant to his question. OP, I have no knowledge of any of the financing options you mentioned. My 2c: get quotes from all of them (as suggested by others)get a quote from your bank for a different kind of loan (if this is an option)calculate what it would cost on your homeloan, if paid off over the same period as the other options (if this is an option). Then pick the best offering, after having also read the smallprint...and go and enjoy the bike!
  2. Overheard them saying yesterday that they use your SAS seeding...a quick check of some names in groups way in front of me, confirms that this cannot be the case... I'm convinced that there is a huge correlation between date of entry and seeding...same as with the CTCT MTB event.
  3. I've not received an email with details of registration - does anybody know what the collection times are at Sportsman's T'Valley today? TIA!
  4. My 2c...we are also in the market for a King size extra length... I'm a light sleeper, so 'non-moving' is non-negotiable, hence we're looking at 'pocket coil' options. Memory foam has never worked for me (I find memory foam pillows impossible to sleep on). This may have something to do with a strange quirk of mine: I cannot sleep on a mattress that gets too hot - any top layer that is too thick or spongy is therefore ruled out. We've received some very good service from Tafelberg Furnishers in Somerset West - they have a huge bed showroom, and have indulged us for hours while we spent some horisontal time on bed after bed - and still haven't made up our minds!
  5. Wholeheartedly agree with the above - good marshaling is something you notice when it's NOT there...and one of the reasons I normally support PPA events. Was this the event-previously-known-as-Computer-Mania-Willowcreek? Was sooooo disappointed that they killed that one off - and even more disappointed when I learnt too late that it had taken place (in another guise) this year! Yes please!!!! Organisers, ask yourselves: what does this stretch / portion / loop add? If the answer is 'only kilometers', can it. I recall an event at Backsberg where we were made to ride around numerous orchards on the lower-lying parts - no value in that at all. Yes please!!! Also, too often the middle distances get watered down. There's a lot of us that like the more technical stuff, but can't comfortably do the 70/80 km distances. PLEASE bring back more events where the 30/40/50km routes are also challenging and ST dominated... The only one I can currently think of that ticks the box, is Piket-Bo-Berg, and possibly Porcupine Ridge (technical terrain). Lastly, while I'm at it: I know that the more routes you put on, the more admin / costs is involved. BUT it is always nice to have a good spread of options for all skill / fitness levels (like they used to have with Die Burger and the Argus MTB events - sadly also not anymore): - a 5-10/12km route predominantly for kids (and parents riding with them) - a +- 20km route that is manageable for relative beginners, but is too far for the kids that have just come off side-wheels, and challenging enough to make them want to come back for more - a +-35/40km medium route with enough technical challenges and scenery - a long flagship route.
  6. made me think about Stanley's lamp in Ladismith... http://blog.sa-venues.com/attractions/stanleys-light/
  7. Communication not very good - can't find race routes / profiles on their website. Also just a heads up: apparently no late entries on the day(s)...
  8. A belated thanks for everybody's inputs - Morne and Grease Monkey, yours were particularly helpful. I'll be on the lookout for a good second-hand deal in the classifieds...
  9. Always thought the hub was not quite as sexist as some of the bikeshops I've ventured into, but recent posts (refer also input on 'the wife's bike' that gets reduced to colour schemes...) seems to suggest otherwise...
  10. I thought last year was only a 'break' from the normal / previous routes...seems like they're sticking with this format, though...a pity, IMHO.
  11. Hi guys I'm potentially in the market for a second hand set of wheels... Have just bought the 2018 Genius 750 plus, which is apparently compatible with 29er wheels - so I thought I'd start looking out for a decent, affordable set. I've been told to make sure that it must be a boost hub, thru-axle...I've read up a bit to decipher what this means, and although I've now got some idea of what these terms mean, I could do with some advice as to what to actually look out for, and what to avoid? Relevant blurb from bought bike specs as follows: 27.5 (2.6 & 2.8) and 29 (2.4 & 2.6) tire compatible with Geo -BB adj. HUB (FRONT) Shimano HB-M6010-B CL / 15x110mm HUB (REAR) Shimano FH-M6010-B CL / Boost 12x148mm In no hurry to buy, so Barry Smith and / or rig-dwellers needn't be in contact...
  12. Bought a 2018 Genius last week after much deliberation - first upgrade to dual sus from my Scott Scale 29er. Got the lesser spec'ed (than the one you're looking at) 750 plus. What clinched the Genius for me was the ability to run both 650b and 29 wheelsets. Was looking to get a 650b for a bit more manoeuvrability, but didn't want to miss out on 29... My experience thus far (only rode G-spot and 20km at Lebanon to date): - yes, the heavier bike (remember I have plus tyres too) is more of a mission uphill. - plus size tyres are fantastic! The extra grip gives a lot more confidence. - twin lockout works well. Does not lock out 100% completely on the climbs though, but more than enough to make it much more rigid. - travel is great - dropper posts are the best thing since sliced bread (my first experience with one!) - pedal strikes are a bit of an issue - I'm on the 650b still, suspect the 29 will lift the bb a bit, but then compromise on agility again... I won't ride this bike clipped in. Loving the genius, and if you're going carbon and 29, I reckon you won't find better...
  13. If the weather holds, I'm likely to pitch up - but will just slink away on a side street somewhere if it looks as if I can't keep up!
  14. jinne this looks lekker! I'm pretty sure I'm too slow (and on MTB) to keep up with the tail-enders though...if I have to bail en route, what would the best options be? I won't mind bailing and then meandering back (might bring a mate along), but quite keen to do Chappies by moonlight, though... (and no, I'm not one of those saying I'm undertrained and unfit - I'm a 5-hour Argus type, so would very possibly not make cut-off...)
  15. Thanks Andreas Bought it from our friends in Malmesbury...last 2018 model (the budget would not allow for 2019!). I've not had a chance to take it out properly yet - just did a quick G-spot run on Friday after work before the weekend's rain set in... Did feel as though I struggled a little bit more uphill, but must also still get used to the gear ratios - and a soft tail! Will just need to get a bit stronger... Downhill - well the little taste I had, was simply LOVELY! Awesome grip and handling...
  16. How much distance will he have to cover? My gut says that's where the crux lies... Choosing a hill that is steep enough to get you over the height-line in the shortest distance possible, BUT taking into account power required / possible, minimising time 'wasted' on turnarounds etc. But then again shorter laps will provide more recovery time, resulting in average faster pace up the hills? Would be interesting to see some 'reverse' Enduro style measuring for Everesting attempts, i.e. only counting the time spent actually pedaling uphill?
  17. I'm also wanting to upgrade, and face the same dilemma. The Scott Genius (or Scott Spark 710 plus - but $$$$) seems, on paper, to hit the spot...more travel and slacker geometry, but the option to take both 27.5 wheels AND 29...so with 1 bike and 2 sets of wheels, I could potentially have the best of both worlds? How are you finding the bb clearance / pedal strikes? This seems to be an issue flagged on some forums...
