  1. The end result
  2. So my latest woodwork related project has been replacing the pin block of an 1880's Bechstein concert grand piano. The whole pin block has to be almost completely hand shaped out of 40mm multi-laminated beech plywood which I airfreighted in from Germany. Almost every surface of the plank is either curved, shaped or tapered with no two faces being parallel with each other. Once fully shaped to exactly match the existing pin block so that it mates perfectly with the underside of the cast iron frame then the 240 odd holes for the tuning pins are drilled at precisely 2 degrees off of square to counter the roughly 100kgs of tension from each string and at precisely 6.8mm in diameter to prevent the 7mm tuning pin from slipping due to the tension of the string. Finally the plank is lap jointed into the existing pieces of the old plank which are let into the edges of the piano.

  4. Now we know you are telling whoppers....
  5. You're welcome. When I bought my set it worked out to about 300 ront for the 10 bits. That's really good value. And they cut very nicely too. [emoji3]

  7. I find that the carbide tipped bits are much better in terms of heat build-up as they cut much easier and therefore cause much less friction. Also, they stay sharp a lot longer.
  8. Looks like the tailgate was inspired by the GWM Steed 6... http://www.duoporta.com/uploadimages/GWMStee61d2_r.jpg
  9. These days it seems as if they always are, it's just the depth that varies.
  10. Who would've thought we would ever be happy to hear that SA was ranked number 5...

  12. So yesterday afternoon I decided to stop using this wretched 6 week cold/flu as an excuse and went for a most beautiful spin along the Karkloof road. I don't think I saw a single other cyclist. Pity, as it was the perfect weather for a ride.
  13. At least they don't use warships as ramming weapons these days otherwise those dudes would be paying Davey Jones a visit sooner or later..
  14. I haven't had much to contribute recently but here is a little "woodworking project" I did this weekend. It is a keyring stand for our little shop. (In case you can't see that[emoji12] )
  15. It is irritatingly persistent hey.
  16. I've been out of action since the second week of may with various versions of colds/ bronchitis/ sore throat etc. I think it is almost over now but still have a bit of a sniffle.
  17. 2 months ago on his 1st birthday.
  18. Mr. Stanley, awoken from his slumber in front of the fire. For some reason he always lies down with his legs crossed!
  19. Mad skillz. But surely it's easier to just walk?

  21. I was wondering about that. Most of them seem to have a very thick layer of clear resin inside - particularly at the bottom. Sent from my SM-A520F using Tapatalk
  22. So today I picked up a lot of around 50 of these exquisitely turned "glasses" made from every imaginable type of indigenous and exotic hardwood that you have ever heard of. Each one is marked on the bass with the species of wood used. They are all highly polished and I assume they hold liquid. Most of them are incredibly thin around the edge and yet are almost all without any cracks. Do any of you hubbers have any idea where they might have come from, what they might be worth and who might be interested in buying them? Sent from my SM-A520F using Tapatalk
  23. Some gravel grinding in the midlands. I'm loving the cooler weather at this time of the year. 45km 600m climbing. Sent from my SM-A520F using Tapatalk
