  1. Yah, fair enough Slowbee, it dont "sit right" with a lot of people for the same reason, I understand, but when you think about it, it really do's no one any harm and if and when the food source stops, the sharks just move off in search of food elsewhere. Actually in the Bahamas this activity is so popular that it contributes significantly to the tourism activity on the island. Read some more about it here - http://www.stuartcove.com/ Would it not be great if we could cultivate an industry like that here.? We have everything, (including the sharks - haha) yet it remains a very small largely untapped market.
  2. One of my favourites, a pic I took of a Tiger circling us off Protea Banks in Durbs.! I have been scuba diving for 25 years, I love it, its my passion and I have dived and attended seminars all over the world. People think that by chumming or feeding sharks it makes them associate Humans with food, according to research, this is not true. A year or two back I went diving in the Bahamas for the third time and enjoyed a number of shark dives where the sharks are actively fed, there are dozens of links or go to Stuart Coves website, they have never had a fatality and they feed the sharks daily, sometimes twice a day. At Stuarts Dives he has an optional seminar you can attend run by the Miami Aquarium and the speaker is a renowned scientist, in his words, "Sharks are opportunistic feeders, if food is available, they will congegate, if not they will move off elsewhere. More people are killed in the USA by Coke vending machines falling on them than by shark attacks." - End Quote.! Great shots Zeepee, I have done it as well, but I took slides and prints, didnt have a digital underwater camera then.!
  3. HaHaHa, Yah,........... I'm counting the days.!
  4. Hmm, theft is a way of life today, we just have to make sure we take the required precautions, insure, and hope for the best. On tuesday my broker visited to renew our insurance for next year and reading through the lists here is what has to be done to maintain my present status (only a 8% increase) for next year - this is for my commercial policy as well as my private policy as its all interlinked. By the way, I have never had a break in at eother my private or commercial property - 1)All doors have to be secured via an extra lock with a key, fitted on a 90 degree plane to the existing locks. 2)All sliding doors have to be secured by an expandable gate. 3)All windows, (including louvres and non-opening windows) have to be burglar proofed. 4)An alarm must be installed, and linked to a response agency. 5)The alarm must be activated EVERY time you leave the premesis - so even if you just pop over to see the neighbour you have to activate the alarm. 6)Outside doors have to be of solid construction, no "stable door" which opens independantly of another half is allowed and doors can not be of "hollow" construction. 7)Every opening door must have an electronic sensor covering it. 8)Out buildings must be alarmed and the alarm activated even when you are at the property, but not in the outbuilding. Now, really, I understand the need for security, but I get the feeling the insurance companies are just making as many rules as possible to enable them to avoid paying claims due to non-compliance.
  5. The differance between the post office cost and the courier cost lies in that the courier will collect at your house and deliver to the reciepient. In other words a door to door service. The PO is usually a counter to counter service, so you have to lug your parcel to the PO and stand in line, then somebody has to stand in line and collect it there. A courier will also transport the parcel a lot quicker than the PO, usually by a good few days, so, Yah, its really about your requirements, basically you pay for the "convenience and speed" of service from a courier, if thats not important, then its fine, use the Post Office.
  6. Yes, duties increased to 45% last monday I think it was. Importing clothing (inc.shoes) will soon be a major headache, herewith an excerpt from a bulliten I recieved from our forwarder. - .........SARS is also operating on the Nedlag system, giving them an indication of a market related price per clothing item. SARS is flagging every clothing tariff heading and demands to see documentation on each shipment. Every entry reflecting a discount is also queried................................ If you dont feel like a "head banging" session with customs, my suggestion would be to not bother with importing clothing / shoes, anything with a "wearing apparel" heading. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> porky2009-10-19 09:12:20
  7. Yah, I'll find out.
  8. Coenie, Coenie,Coenie, when a guard is posted at an entrance to a property, when they sit in a shelter with the security companies name prominantly displayed, when they wear the regulation security outfit, when there are boards around saying the property is protected by Jambo Security, when three guards try to stop you - I would say theres good reason to believe they are legit, wouldnt you.? But, be that as it may, my daytime job is a consulting engineer, I work in this area often - I will find out, its not difficult, I deal with the muncipality daily - I am sick of getting the raw end of the stick because some irresponsible cyclists feel its okay to disregard any and all rules and regulations, who feel the laws dont apply to them so to speak. Well, they do, and the sooner we all start to behave like rational, thinking adults and not lawless lunitics when we go out on a bicycle the sooner we will be accepted in all facets of SA Life. ..........On the other point about been personal, I reread the post and I agree, I was irritated and annoyed, its not an excuse just a fact, but I was wrong and I apologise.
  9. Personally, I think you should have stopped after the first call and found out what the ruckus was about. Maybe the property is private (there need not be a sign) rezoned, been sold, the owner dosnt want cyclists there, there could be any number of reasons to prohibit your entrance. To me this is just another example of initial poor behaviour (not finding out what the issue was and if you were allowed to be there in the first place) which escalated into a confrontation and could have resulted in a far worse outcome. My suggestion would be to phone Jambo and speak to a manager, ask if you are allowed to be there, if the answer is "No" thank them and say a prayer of gratitude the bottle never hit you in the face, if the answer is "Yes" make him aware of the situation, tell them you expect a written apology or you will take the matter to the newspapers. In any event, then, lay charges at the police.

    CUSTOMS HELP?

  11. HaHa,..........nothing???............I dont believe that.! Actually, I thought I might try it myself, then I remembered I had only done 300 kms on both tyres since the Argus - guess it would be pointless hey?
  12. Its quite amazing to me companies are still interested in doing business there, although I cant see how freezing their account can be of any benefit to the Mugabe government, however it could give Nestle the excuse it needs to close down, put everybody out of work and withdraw from the country. Somehow, Mr Mugabe's logic eludes me,........ guess I am not very bright.!
  13. Sure, but I mean just rotating them around occasionally to even out wear.
  14. ............... took my car in today to have the wheels aligned after hitting a thousand potholes on the road from Sun City yesterday, and the technician said he would just rotate the tyres as well to even out the wear, and extend tyre life. So, while I was enjoying a cup of bitter, lukewarm coffee in the waiting room, I wondered if rotating tyres on a cycle would do the same (ie) extend the life? I can understand due to the slow speed of a bicycle, tyre balance is unimportant, but theoretically, the rear tyre, as in any load bearing drive wheel, should wear faster than the front, so rotation should be beneficial??? porky2009-10-12 09:42:21
  15. Hey dont get me wrong - i am not disputing the fact that corruption is amongst us' date=' and if you or your family is in direct danger you will do what is required to protect them - what I do disagree with is "taking him far enough off the street and killing him" over what? some glasses and watches. Dont want to go into a debate about our judicial/police system - just saying i dont agree with those comments. [/quote'] Yah, I agree. What will you gain.? Nothing, and you will likely end up staring a jail term or at the least a criminal record in the face. Theres a world of differance in defending yourself, your family and your property, and advocating senseless violence in any form.
  16. Hmm, we import containers and containers of product on behalf of our customers, and, this year we have had three stops with a physical inspection, and one stop where it was released on production of a catalog. Yesterday we got notification a shipment of oil was stopped. Customs is on a mission this year, they are stopping a lot more than usual and due to the collapse of the clothing industry here, if you import any kind of textile, clothing etc, I can almost guarantee every shipment will be stopped. I dont have an issue with it, if you are 100% legit its a mild inconvenience and a short delay, but if you are crooking..............................!! A few months ago I was at one of the tail gate inspections customs do and the customs officer told me they stopped a container of popcorn seeds as it just seemed odd someone would ship a 40ft container of popcorn seeds (thats a lot of seeds!!) and hidden amongst the boxes of seeds, were a whole lot of boxes of fake branded perfume.!! porky2009-10-09 05:50:32
  17. Hey,..... well I learned something too Capricorn, I spent a good 10 minutes wondering what this "pwnage" was. Who says you cant teach an old dog new tricks hey?
