  1. Shot all on Insta360 X3 and using Premier Pro with no fancy edits/transitions etc and a LUT to bring in some vibrance.. Used Insta360 self stick which is really light, short and easily handled and works like a an old car aerial, no twisting or locking off so best for this type of action. PS lenses are naked, I have tried the supplied covers and films, they all affect the shot, soft focus, errors with stitching...haven't tried the dive case..
  2. I have tried DaVinci and its a mind boggler to get your head around! Gave up very quickly but people swear by it...
  3. Ja, better check that, I don't think iMovie recognises GoPro codecs which is their own proprietary codec ...you may have to first convert GoPro footage to mp4...
  4. I have been a GoPro fanbooi since the Hero 3 and have had it as the mainstay of most of my action cam arsenal...also tried the Garmin VIRB 30 ULTRA but Garmin got left behind in the tech race for stability, FPS and image quality but it is still a pretty decent piece of kit and the editing software is still ok and works well if you want GPS gauge overlays Lately I have been using the Insta360 X3 and it is a fantastic camera and ALMOST (ALMOST) is the single action camera you need, light, good stability, constantly updated firmware, good easy to use App and no issues importing footage direct into Premier Pro or Final Cut Pro (comes with a plugin that is installed when you download their Studio version for editing). The Studio version is OK and you can do basic editing and re-framing of 360 footage but you cannot string a number of clips together into a video...so you need another full editor like PP or FCP. So ALMOST, because the GP will always be more rugged and take a proper beating...the front lens is replaceable (unless you use the Max Mod but even then if you scratch that lens, you buy another.....any other 360 camera including the GP Max, if you scratch that lens its bricked!), the new stabilisation and horizon levelling on the 11 just makes the camera so easy to use. Oh and built in GPS...the Insta360 does not have this and you need to have it hooked to your phone to embed GPS data or use the expensive remote accessory...and it needs to always be connected so battery life suffers and you end up with long clips to be trimmed...every time you switch off the camera, the link to your phone has to be re-established for the next clip...PITA! So GoPro FTW if its true action rugged video stuff, Insta360 if it's just run of the mill, low impact.
  5. Premier Pro
  6. If you want 2.7k, best to record in 2.7k rather than import 4k and then render down to 2.7k. On a GoPro, this will give you higher frame rates (and therefore smoother slo-mo) and wider angles so there is a plus. One tip, record more short clips instead of long ones that you will need to download then trim during edit. You can view the short clips on the camera then delete the ones you don't want and only import the ones you do want to minimise editing. TBH using a mobile to do any decent editing is real PITA...for short Instagram type uploads, great but anything more than that rather re-consider taking a laptop...I always have one on my travels and even after the most hectic of riding days, I could always smash out a basic edit on a PC before bedtime! I load all my raw footage onto an SSD drive and edit from that so the PC doesn't get jammed with bits....even cache files go to the SSD and they read and write so fast these days, you don't even notice any difference in rendering speed..at the end of the trip, you have all you mini edits already done and you can run a trip edit by combining them all......
  7. Not too early to start a new [Event] thread...Cape Town Cycle tour 2024...!🤷‍♂️
  8. I have used Kinemaster Android with GoPro footage no issues, also try PowerDirector
  9. Raw Argus 2023....
  10. What a spectacle....early start and like horses out the gate!!! No squeeze at the on-ramp and straight to work...good climb up Wynberg and great run down the M3. Simon's Town was a test climb into the wind...had me worried about Smits but it never really materialised....got shunted across the gutter into the side lane by a tandem at the Millers climb and had to bunny hop back twice to get back on the road!!! and what a run down to Scarborough and along Misty Cliffs, spectacular scenery but got hit hard by groin cramps!!! Pedalled through it and did a lot of standing up Chappies to keep the cramps at bay!! Suikerbossie was the usual riot of spectators willing everyone up and over...on the way down Llandudno and passed 12 Apostles, I realised I was in for a sub-4 so gunned it all the way...just made it TBC 3h54!!!! Beyond stoked!!! We all come for the views! Sometimes on my own... Sometimes not!!! Always dashing tho! And meeting fellow Hubbers...howsit Smarty (sic)! I'll be back!!!! Feels for those that crashed and RIP to rider at Misty Cliffs if this did happen....
  11. Warmup run along the strip to the best coffee spot in town...
  12. No trip and stay in that area is complete without a visit to the epic Garden Route Trail Park... https://www.gardenroutetrailpark.com/
  13. Great video and flying! 10:49...always a heart-stopper when this happens!!!🤣
  14. Niccceee, very excellent video! Also featuring Tegan Phillips?
  15. Welcome to Cape Town's multi-season weather zones....
  16. I can relate to the lines you took!!!! The Beast is looking ruff, never noticed that ramp @ 0:52!
  17. All I saw was $$$$$$...like that....
  18. Yip, trial and error... if you mount it on chesty harness, you can use it in single lens option as well, it does have a lower res (1440k) than after reframing the 360 footage (2.7k) but has wider field of view and stabilisation is good. The only pain with managing the video direct from the Max is that you first have to convert it via GoPro Player app as they have their own proprietary codec and its not readable by most of the usual video editors like FCP and Premier Pro...so first you convert then import into video editor then reframe using the GoPro plugin for FCP and PP...so this will take it from 5.6k converted footage down to 2.7k in your editor for "flat" videos but you have the advantage of being able to pan all around and chose your shot using key frames. So also look at the Insta360 X3, has similar specs to GoPro Max BUT imports directly to FCP or PP without having to convert first...you still need the GoPro plugin to reframe and it still goes down to 2.7K but you saved that step of converting which can be time consuming. Their mobile app for making quick edits on the go is great and they constantly updating firmware. Form factor of the X3 is a little better I have found and the stitching of the footage from both lenses into one video seems a bit better. Having said all that, GoPro are expected to launch a new Max soon and they may address this as the Insta360 X3 has fast caught up with the Max which was King of the 360 prosumer hill for a long time! Another option is the Hero 10/11 combined with the Max Mod lens (which is basically one of the lenses from the max that mounts onto the Hero camera in place of the normal lens it comes with), which allows for horizon levelling...ie footage remains level no matter how you rotate the camera, massive stabilisation and great FOV (not quite the same as single lens on the Max) but no 360 option obviously. Bonus is you can remove the lens and use normal lens for 5.6k footage as well and import direct with no conversion into any editor. And you can replace it if it gets scratched, something that you cannot do for both X3 and Max, they become paperweights if you scratch any lens (the supplied lens protectors don't work, there's always a soft focus look to the footage). So now that you know all that and the experience I have had with both, which one should you get? The Max is great and you can always use it in single lens mode so you get 2 cameras in one, same for X3...but having the Hero version with Max Mod is always my main choice...especially for MTB and surfing....BTW water loves curved lens and there is no way around that but its really bad with a 360 camera. My 2 c's...good luck and welcome to the entrance of the rabbit hole!
  19. Ha....be careful is all I say....so to get the most out of a 360 camera, you need to mount it away from you and the bike as you say...on your head is cool...once....then it gets boring cause there's no reference in the shot. I've had one taped to top tube and extended out front on a retractable pole but you need to be real careful: Helmet mount with short pole also possible but needs break away point if you plan or don't plan to face plant! Back pack mount also works but looks a bit weird.... Drone works as well for B roll.... Oh and look after those lenses.... Hand held works well for gravel and road Check out my channel, plenty of samples there...
  20. Yoh! Now I'm lus for adventure! What time of the year did you do this? ie how hot/cold was it?
  21. Hard to choose between this and Chappies...on a good day, I think this one wins!!!
  22. There were a few big bunches but not so lekka to hold onto a camera while in the middle of a bunch😜
  23. My first car, a yellow Passat S/wagon...did that too then jumped in and drove from Port Nolloth to Cape Town and back(in 3rd gear)...had to go back to Springbok, (in 3rd gear still) a few weeks later to get 4th gear replaced!!!!!
