I am not sure what you base this comment on. It is simply not true that cycling is more dangerous here in terms of crime vs. Europe. Last year one of the pro teams was robbed of all their kit in Italy. What is true is that crime here tends to be more violent.

Do not think it is a very hot deai. 2014 model retails for R17k and as far as I can see comes with combi of Shimano 105 (shifters and rear derailler) and Tiagra (rest). Reckon it should be possible to get a 2013 model of a good make with 105 / Ultegra combi. Just do some shopping around with LBS's and tell them you are ready to move on the right deal

Heard yesterday that the course contains 38000m ascent over 3500km in 3 weeks. Ratio sounds about right but still puts my efforts nicely in perpective as I have not reached 30k ascent on year to date basis yet On a different note: why is Phil Liggitt no commentating?

Not sure how flexible you are timewise but easiest solution is to start riding a little later. Sure it is cold on the highveld first thing but come 8am you'll have perfect riding weather again
