  1. Hi there, While I agree this tool isn't the cheapest, it is made from high tensile steel, and like any tool designed to last the lifetime of a bike shop - this comes at a bit of premium. Furthermore we don't encourage end users working on their own bikes, but rather to have it serviced by their local bike shop who are [hopefully] well trained, highly experienced and carrying all the necessary tools required. For this reason we don't supply any DT Swiss tools direct to the public, which means you would likely have been charged the standard markup on this tool by whichever dealer you were quoted by making it that much more pricey. That being said, if you are able to ping me your preferred local bike shop I can see what we can do to help out.
  2. No problem, One of those spec choices made to try bring a bike within a certain price point - Specialized do the same with Joytech hubs on some of their MTB's
  3. Great to hear! Unfortunately while your rims and likely spokes and nipples are all DT products, the Axis hubs found on your wheels are their own brand independent of DT Swiss and we sadly do not offer any support for these hubs. Your best bet would be to chat to your local Specialized dealer as I don't think there is an Axis agent in SA, however brands like Specialized, Giant and Scott will usually carry spares to support their clients in situations exactly like this. If they can't help either - we would happily assist in any way we can with replacement hubs. Worst case, you can also try an engineering company to machine the end caps for you, however QR in particular is a tricky one to get right!
  4. If you're riding enduro, or you are hard on wheels (or both) I agree - it's better safe than sorry, and these guys are bomb proof! For trail duties we will be launching the XM 481 (30mm trail rim) very soon in SA
  5. Happy to help
  6. Hi there, Thanks for your query! While it is technically possible to change a 360 hub to a ratchet system (for which you can then upgrade to 54T) this is NOT advised, and will void any warranty your hub/wheels still have. Think of it like putting a Ferrari motor into a Fiat, just because they are the same brand/company does not mean they are compatible or that either were designed for this. 360 hubs use the 3pawl forward drive system, and to upgrade your hub to a faster engagement would require replacing the entire hub to a Star Ratchet model (350, 240s) or a newer Ratchet EXP model (240, 180) Hope this helps, sorry it's not the answer you were probably hoping for
  7. Killer combo! Rolling on EX511 / 350 myself!
  8. Kicking things off, we would like to offer a very brief overview of the many riders out there who may be requiring assistance when it comes to DT Swiss parts or services. As many of you may already know, DT Swiss is one of the most widely represented brands in the world due largely to it's use by many well known bike brand's as the source of things like hub internals, spokes, nipples or complete hubs and wheel sets. Some examples of brands which have used DT Swiss parts on their own brand of wheels, either in the past or still to the present day: (as of September 2020) - Specialized's Roval wheels - Giant's own brand wheels - Scott's Syncros wheels - Trek's Bontrager wheels If you include brands which have at some point used, or continue to use non OEM DT parts (meaning a DT part you could purchase off the shelf) the list grows even bigger: - Cannondale - Santa Cruz - Yeti - KTM - BMC - Norco - Storck - Commencal - YT - Ibis - Rocky Mountain - Pivot - Niner - Ellsworth - Ridley et al If you are riding any model of bike, although usually from "mid tier" and up (R40k+ price range) from one of these brands, you are very likely rolling on some DT Swiss products. It stands to reason we have done our best in researching our market well and do our best as a distributor to import as many of the applicable spares required for all of the aforementioned brands within reason.
  9. Hello fellow Hubbers, This thread serves as the official DT Swiss forum/tech Q&A for the African cycling community. As the official importer and distributor of DT Swiss in Africa, we at Get Stoked Distribution do our best to try keep track of any queries related to DT products on Bike Hub and answer them as swiftly and comprehensively as possible. This being said, we feel it's much easier for many of you that there is a dedicated space where you can directly ask your questions or offer your thoughts. You can find all our DT Swiss aftermarket products and many service products available to end consumers on our online portal: Get Stoked Online We kindly ask you to respect the views of other hubbers and to try to keep your questions on topic - we are a community sharing the love of cycling after all... Thanks, and looking forward to being of service to the DT Swiss community! The Get Stoked team
  10. Thanks for the kind words!
  11. I couldn't agree more! This is a shameless self promotion on my part, but I hope I will be forgiven as I genuinely think it offers something different in this regard... https://getstokedonline.co.za/ What is it? A South African e-commerce portal that might not be the cheapest prices normally associated with online stores, but we offer things no other online store does: - Supporting local: At checkout you're required to select from our growing list of our premium dealers for which a portion of every purchase made directly supports your chosen dealer where it matters - their bottom line - Click and Collect: as the only online store in the cycling industry in SA offering this solution, customers can opt to have the product(s) purchased shipped to their selected dealer and fitted professionally for free - Try before you buy: Customers can choose to demo products from a growing list of brands which currently includes Formula brakes, Ride Concepts shoes and DMR flat pedals - (link disabled while we restock key products) - Warranty: Customers can make a warranty claims directly through our portal by following the standard procedures one would need to should they have taken the product to their LBS anyway. This saves time, and helps expedite the process without having to leave your house - Premium brands: Get Stoked Online imports some of the raddest brands in the market, many of which we get told by customers "I wish would be stocked by more stores" Apart from all the above, we also pride ourselves in offering exceptional service (I come from a successful retail background, my partners founded the legendary Dial'd bikes) We ship directly to you if preferred and you will be helping a small to medium business. Lastly, we don't drop ship, a practice in which listed items are not actually in stock and cause huge frustration for you, the end consumer Again, I apologise for the self promotion, but those who know us, know we always aim to serve and help others Thanks for reading!
  12. Cool man. I'm also a DH rider... Also worked in bike shops. Just saying.
  13. Interesting that the mineral oil would put you off. For most people who know the difference, they prefer mineral as it's non corrosive and better for the environment. If you're wondering whether mineral oil will fade due to lower boiling point - just refer to Duane Bosch's post above. Karl Ebel is both a big and [very] fast DH rider and experienced no fade while riding in the Alps! Each to their own though!
  14. I'm biased in this answer as I work with the importers of Formula, but in aide of helping make your decision easier - why not demo our brakes? Through our online portal you can request a demo set from your nearest premium dealer: https://getstokedonline.co.za/demo-request/ Cheers!

    DT Swiss Hub

My apologies, but I miss read the original post and failed to see the "used" part of the statement. If the hubs are not new it is entirely possible that the hub was taken apart and not put back together properly. Things to check are: - cassette fitment (tightened correctly) - ratchet springs facing correct way - bearing shim in place - lockring tightened correctly - rubber seal fitted correctly and not pinched These are all likely to be the issue long before the axle spacer! If in doubt refer to the official DT tech documents or this video for correct tools/fitment techniques/orientation of parts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Wde2goI3Cs&t=486s

    DT Swiss Hub

Hi there, Here was my response to a similar thread formed some time ago regarding a similar issue: Hi Everyone... I see this thread is still getting more and more views so I thought as the distributor of DT SWISS I would take the opportunity to help clarify and offer insights for the other users if possible... With regards to the initial problem experienced by the user Melch, it is very likely this was an issue with the 15.4mm alu spacer that slides onto the axle being damaged (likely crushed) which then would cause the freehub to bind. I must also point out that DT SWISS aftermarket (i.e not part of a wheelset), standard spacing (142x12mm) straightpull hubs are NOT compatible with the new Shimano 12speed Microspline freehub. Apart from these two possibilities - the latter not being the case in the user's instance - there are not a lot of ways in which a DT hub can bind as the tolerances are second to none. As examples*: Losing a ratchet spring, fitting the springs the wrong way around, "wear" on the end cap, bearings being damaged.... these are scenarios known to have had little adverse effect on the performance of the hub. They are the WWII Tiger tank of hubs! If you would like to know more about any DT products or have had an issue you would like further info/feedback on then please do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly and I will answer your questions as best I can! You can reach me on: marc@getstoked.co.za Thanks for your attention! Further to the above: There is also a chance of incorrect assembly which is unlikely if the wheels are quite new as you said. Either way the best is to have your LBS take a look and to make it theirs (and my) problem to solve as soon as possible for you
  18. I think it's one of those products you purchase once and you give it to your grand kids though...
  19. Great work guys! Long may it continue
  20. Think of it like Eurobike or Interbike, except better because you can actually go to it instead of reading about it on Pinkbike a week later... Anyone who has been to these types of trade shows will tell you how awesome it is to feel like a kid in a candy store surrounded by endless cycling products and services! I guarantee you there will be products you weren't even aware are being imported to SA as they are not represented at your LBS! For a meager entry fee I'm sure you will be glad you came! Hope to see you there.
  21. Hi Desi, I represent This Way Out at Contermanskloof (formerly The Bike Shed) We currently have various sized models of both 2015 and 2014 alloy Thunderbolt's. We are currently offering huge discounts on our older models as well as on our 2016 models. Note that only the 750 msl featured in this review is available in the 2016 range, however special requests can be accommodated depending on international stock levels. Let me know if you would like me to get in touch with you regarding demo rides or simply viewing the bikes at any of our three stores. Thanks again for the superb review Iwan! Cheers

  23. So this years trip was beyond the insane. Despite a broken arm it was still the most fun I've ever had with my clothes on. Duane and Vince as guides offer the best advice possible for such a trip and without their help it's easy to see how one could get bewildered with the sheer amount of choice. I think without a guide it's easy to restrict ones self to what you know and having Duane and Vince around minimized the time needed to be spent exploring in terms of trails and with bars/retail/bike shops Incase the last 20 pages of comments didn't make it clear. The riding there is simply insane. No matter your skill level, you are guaranteed to have a blast. Again I can't say enough how much it helps to have insider advice that only a veteren of the PDS can give you. Big up to the guys for organising what turned out to be the best holiday I've had. Cheers
