  1. Uhm, I know exchange rates fluctuate. And fwiw, I used those exact same charts on XE and without knowing exactly when the order was locked in you can't really defend the issue on a purely exchange rate foundation. And even with that knowledge, Specialized for example don't live in a parallel universe where those fluctuations don't apply to them, yet their increases are around 10-15% year on year. HENCE, Giant did something different to them, which is having a less than desireable effect for me, the consumer. HENCE, the 35% WTF comment. At some point retailers will have to say "look guys, yes the exchange rate is what it is, but we are inflating ourselves out of reach for the consumer. Maybe we need to suck some of this up, or talk to the boys at head office to help us out here so that we don't have to just pass it all on to the consumer".
  2. Haha, clever. No my Flow Ex's on Novatec Hubs are keeping my wheels turnin just fine.
  3. R67 500 - R49 995 = R17 505 / R49 995 = .35 x 100 = 35% Or am I again doing something wrong?
  4. No. You're redirecting the argument as you see fit. My argument was "How the hell is this 35% more expensive when other large brands are managing 15% (and in some cases 8-10%)?" People then chimed in with the exchange rate trope. My reply was that the exchange rate, which affects all equally, cannot account for this increase when others somehow avoided it. Yes, the exchange rate makes sense as part reason for this actual bike's increase, but why is Giant so particularly sensitive to it? The exchange rate jump is around 20% - 25% for the last year so purchasing times is bull. So my point (albeit poorly expressed) and conclusion is that Giant's business model is less consumer friendly when other brands have managed to absorb some of the exhange rate knock on.
  5. So how is it that other brands managed to restrict their increases for 2016 to 15%? The ZAR rate was at a low of R10.18 during the last two years and a year ago it was around R11.50, which on a year on year comparison is about a 25% deterioration, but of course they didn't pl ace the order today and given the gradual slide of the ZAR the last few months the difference would be less than the current December - December extremes (but probably around the 20 - 25% range). So I am still not seeing the 27.5% or the 50% you hint at? But ok, since we're chucking insults around, I'll make you a deal. I'll stop complaining about things I don't understand if you stop posting advice about things you don't understand.
  6. Sorry, but no. The ZAR only has so much to do with it. Other brands have reflected ZAR-linked inflation and have a 15% year on year increase to show for it. The bike itself is more expensive in USD base. Furthermore, it'll be a cold day in hell that I concede that R70k is "good value for money" for a bicycle. Relative to other overpriced, overmarketed, overhyped bikes? Sure, a bargain. In actual terms compared to, oh I don't know, a motorvehicle? Don't make me laugh. The bike industry is too busy backslapping itself to realise it's becoming a joke. Seriously, Lacondeguy's sentiments on enduro find application.
  7. All 2016 ranges are 35% more expensive? No they're not.
  8. R5 000 for rims, R1500 for spokes and labour (just had a set built) and Hope Pro 2 Evo are R3750 a set on CWC. So around R10k, but let's call it R11k to be generous. Still about R7k cheaper. What am I missing?
  9. Building those hoops onto Hope Evo's would half the price. Those hubs cannot be that much better.
  10. This is literally two blocks from my home, so I reckon I'll walk on over and have a look. Tickets only at the gates?
  11. 35% increase year on year on the RRP? Is the bike different in spec for 2016?
  12. Guys, you are seriously overcomplicating it. It's a race format. Not a scene. Some people race XCO because they are insane, others race XCM because they are mad fit, and other race Enduro because they are far better at descending than climbing. It's not mainstream or underground. If it becomes massively popular then no one will care. It's just a race format so if you think a certain race's tracks are too mellow you don't enter. Same reason some people ride only Nissan Trailseeker events and others only Bestmed races. Really not a scene thing.
  13. What's public? The event was created as a test run for the concept and level - completely unsupported other than medical staff at the Festival (600m vert down at Basecamp) and completely blind for 99% of the field - not exactly the opportunity to send 50 random people up and down the mountain risking the longevity of the event even before it's properly established. I'm hardly "in the know" with the organisers other than seeing them at events. We never ride together (other than Morzine last year), so it's absolutely not a case of "baantjies vir boeties". Some people were invited and encouraged to suggest riders' names that were left out if people reckoned they were capable of looking after themselves. I asked that three people be added and after vouching for their abilities they were added and participated. So perhaps as Dan said, you have only your friends to blame?
  14. Nee wat. Dave Mercer het met sy Hardtail dit gesmash, en ek het oorleef met my relatiewe XC'erige Stumpy. Jy is meer as bekwaam.
  15. Just for the record there was a participant in lycra on his niner without dropper. He is still alive and no one gave him crap. Niners in fact did very well given the rocky terrain. I myself was very grateful for the extra rolling momentum offered by my wagon wheels. Bottom line is, the organisers couldn't risk sending someone up there without any clue what his/her abilities were. One bad accident and it's a near impossible extraction that regardless of disclaimers and "We told you so"'s completely ruins it for everyone and jeopordises the land owners willingness to let us do this again. As for Piket-bo-berg I am among the grumpy bunch who also would love it not to be invite only, but the land owners posted their reasons and I respect them. I'll just be sure to enter their events or kruip more gat with the iRide okes. P.s. Chips on shoulders are so passé Odinson...
  16. Flippie! Jy moet hom volgende jaar doen. Di's jou kos daai ou maat! Dan kry ons vir Kabous ook hier!
  17. This is true. Besides, I'm not even sure those trails are open for riding otherwise (except maybe SS1?) But if you want something similar but slower and shorter, Sanddrif has some nice tech rock. Or you could do Contermanskloof's rock gardens blindfolded for proper simulation.
  18. The other thing I realised about this type of race is that suddenly bike set up and component integrity matters. Some serious contenders got relegated to no man's land because of parts failure, flats or just poor setup which other races let you get away with. I beat some riders waaaaaaaay better than me simply because my old Alu Stumpy just refused to die. Went for a ride yesterday without having even washed it since Ezel and the bike is as it was before Ezel. Tell me again why spending R100k on that new AM steed makes you faster?
  19. This has changed the way I look at mtbing. Any other Enduro will now have to answer to the Ezel. Thanks Dan and all involved. Was epic. PS Odinson, get a life. Chop.
  20. What HT is Duran riding there (other than the magical rainbow pooping unicorn he is imagining)?
  21. And last year with World Cup stops nearby some of the guys got to ride their bikes with Gregg Minnaar et al.
  22. It really isn't. What Duane fails to mention is that besides the riding it's like walking around in the Sound of Music. Civilised folk, Surreal mountain forests and cowfields, and a holiday atmosphere 24/7. It really is crazy to think you get that for under R30k. It pains me to say, you can't even buy a new bike for that money anymore!
  23. What is this witchcraft??? A decently kitted bike for under R40k???? Bang for your buck this!
  24. Would sell it and buy a Stumpy  I kid! Very jealous!
