  1. Flip, this excites even me. Pretty sure they'll get the design right, now I just hope they spec them smartly so that people like me with mouths to feed can do more than just complain about how expensive bikes have gotten! Will be awesome if they can do a nice sub-R50k trail ripper with the basics in spec nailed
  2. Just to be clear. I am just disappointed by the fact that I went into my test period with the same preconceived ideas about the wheelset's specs, and detailed how they proved me wrong, yet the reaction isn't one of "Well good on SRAM for managing that". Rather it's just a rehashing of everyone's own pre-existing notions. Which tells me the product will never be given a fair chance, price aside. Yes, I may take things too personally. My wife tells me every day. But my heart is firmly on my sleeve.
  3. No, I'm fine with criticism. Your reply was stated as if I trawled the Web for that one positive review. Just pointed out it was not that. And criticism is one thing. Knee-jerk keyboard warriorism based on zero first hand experience is another. It's ok though. We don't have to get along.
  4. Yes, must concede I figured they'd be around R8k. That price is a bit rough.
  5. Have you ridden them Myles? Or does your extensive online research warrant such a dismissive attitude? Pretty sure if I didn't manage to wreck them most riders will be just fine. But what do I know. Someone in the Pinkbike forums confirmed they're *** so it must be so.
  6. What boggles the mind is that I spent 2 months on them, formed my own opinion of them, wrote as thorough a review as I could and thought I'd share it here for what it's worth, yet you choose to respond with snark. If you read my review you'd see I had my reasons for saying what I said. Sorry for having an opinion that differs from yours.
  7. I beg to differ: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/157034-sram-roam-40/
  8. Local authorities confirmed arson. They were busy cutting new firebreaks when they saw individual start fire further down in alien vegetation and fynbos. I give up. How do you negotiate with a force that's only aim is to destroy?
  9. Can't find photo now, but Meurant posted picture of bluegum trails razed
  10. Meurant posted 4am this morning that it has reached his trails. Delheim burning. So much destruction. Strong rumours that it was arson originating from Pniel. Wonder whether the Fairtree Contour race will still continue. Feel for the farmers and land managers and communities that depend on them especially this time of the year.
  11. Funny thing is (and I realise this is totally anecdotal) but the only people I have recently come across with new bikes are on sponsored / test kit. Which in Cape Town is like 90% of riders
  12. I've reached the point where if my bike breaks I'm taking up running again. I feel sorry for the niche bike retailers out there.
  13. Having annual build projects. Must be nice. I have annual "Coming to terms with riding the same bike for another year" projects.
  14. Rode the S-Works Stumpjumper 6Fattie on Saturday at Helderberg trails. Now, a disclaimer, I only spent maybe 4km on it. Some climbing, some descending and a lap or three on the pump track, so really, take it for what it's worth. The bike set-up wasn't ideal either since the stem length was a bit longer than I'm used to so the bike felt a bit small under me (I felt too far forward). I must say, the bike climbed way better than I thought it would and wasn't as sluggish as expected. I aimed it at roots whenever I saw them and predictably it felt really smooth over that. Which is why I would never buy the bike. It really felt like it numbed the whole experience for me. I ride the technical and rough trails not so that I can say I did it, I want to FEEL it! I love the feeling of almost being blown off the bike by massive rockes and roots at speed and making it through nonetheless. Anyways, back to the bike. The tyres do grip like snot. Even on the dry loose dirt on the clay pumptrack at Helderberg I tried to put a foot out and throw the rear, but it just refused to lose traction. I also hit a jump or three on it and for some reason it felt terribly dodgy. I'm no Lacondeguy, but I can at least keep a line in a jump. This felt like it wanted to dip on every jump I hit. However, this could (and is probably) be more to do with the longer than usual stem (it was 60mm, so not crazy long...except for Myles ;-p ). After I gave the bike back I got back on my niner and the first thing I told my riding mates was that a) my riding position on the Stumpy felt much higher (I haven't looked at the numbers so maybe it just physically is a taller bike) and b) once accellerated my Stumpy felt like it held its speed longer and with more eagerness. It just felt faster, although my friend assured me the 6Fattie would produce better times and my experience was more to do with the numbing effect of the big wide wheels. Long story short, the bike was better at the things I thought it would suck at, but was less fun to ride for me. In the massive sample of 4km I tested it on
  15. I think that's the perfect approach. Use as intended and then at the end push it a bit beyond to see where the limits lie. Anything else would be unfair to the product. Perhaps consider taking a picture or two of the trails where tested for universal reference? Or even better, a picture or short vid of the product being tested After all, more content makes for happier readers.
  16. What trails did you ride this bike on? I think that would be a nice addition to reviews so that readers get a general idea of what types of trails the products were tested on to gauge whether it is similar to what they usually ride. E.g. if this bike did well on Rosemary Hill it wouldn't really convince a rider who usually rides Jonkers and Steilte which is more technical and extreme in its ascents and descents. Just some constructive feedback
  17. The same way AB de Villiers and Stiaan van Zyl are both cricketers. But their not really both playing cricket. But seriously, I'm not going to continue this debate. You are relentless. So if you want, I'll concede. You win. Please stop. I give up. I'm sorry I insulted your bike. Tell it I apologise.
  18. Not grumpy at all. I am being dead serious, albeit a bit extreme to illustrate the point. Nothing wrong with a Mahindra, but seriously. Nomad's not in a different league, it's playing a different sport. And if the pricing hadn't jumped so insanely, I'd have picked the Mahindra because it would be much better bang for buck at R49k. But alas. *Starts looking for well priced 2nd hand 911's* *Finds none* *Goes and rides his current bike, realises it's all bullsh1t hype and gets on with his life*
  19. But let's be honest now. Nomad or Reign. Nomad? Or NOMAD!
  20. They don't. One is a 911 GT 3 RS, the other is a Mahindra.
  21. Absolutely. No disputing that. To replace my bike now would also be a 30% jump over two years, which is ridiculous - and that is purely exchange rate driven since RRP hasn't changed. Joke is, the actual point of my post initially was that bike prices are ridiculous. In all countries and currencies. It's a joke. At least there seems to be some concensus on that. 2nd hand is the future. Of this I am becoming more and more convinced.
  22. Do you have any of those variables at your disposal? If not, then how come your (on your own version) speculation is more valid than mine, which is based on the assumption that the market treats all players equally and any change in outcome is because the input decision was different?
  23. Takes two to tango. And me making the point that Hope hubs, which are widely accepted as top tier, is waaaaaay better value for money, is not being hellbent on a fight. It's having an opinion and making a statement. But ok, I realise this forum has a pecking order and people have dedicated their entire lives to being seen as the auhority on literally anything posted on here ever, so I'll be on my way.
  24. Ja, I know. Hope is ***.
