  1. I know. It is disappointing, but I would hope that it is all bravado and that the issue had been highlighted enough for people to think twice before acting out. It is unfortunate that people in general feel a lot braver when they have the numerical superiority.
  2. People are jittery this close to the Argus. A high percentage of the people on the Atlantic Seaboard at the moment are not from Cape Town. Apart from the huge increase in bicycle traffic, there are many tourists driving erratically because "they are on holiday". I know the scenery is inspiring, but they should pull over to do that selfy and not try to do it while driving. Why stop in the middle the road on Chappies to look at the view? During my Saturday morning ride I had three separate close calls caused by noobs that should have spent some time familiarising themselves with cycling before rushing down for the "big race". All of the incidents involved them pulling out in front of me from their hotel entrances when unsafe to do so and wobbling around, with their wifes/partners in tow, trying to clip in while I had to perform evasive manoeuvres with cars around me. There was no point in getting upset. I just accept it as part of riding at this time of the year. Add this to the notoriously poor driving of the locals. On the same ride, I had two taxis do dangerous U-turns in front of me. I am not excusing poor behaviour (I hope the clowns in the OP's vid are exposed and prosecuted), but merely reiterating your implied suggestion that people should chill and enjoy the experience.
  3. All cyclists hobble when they are not on their bikes.
  4. Glad your group are okay. It just goes to illustrate how the poor behaviour of one group can affect all cyclists. I am very disappointed that Hubbers would have been involved in that incident as the tense relationship between motorists and cyclists has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum.
  5. Totally unacceptable. I hope that prosecutions follow. I am also disappointed that none of the other cyclists in that group sought to restrain the more active idiots.

Its a false flat. Slightly uphill after the BP garage on the left.
  7. I'm very glad they do.
  8. Foul-mouthed, tattooed, machete-wielding Mexican hobbit. Love his work. Edit: Mexi-CAN
  9. Then I hope you (we) have good weather and a light wind at your back.
  10. I have the 12nm which I find to be very stable and secure. I prefer a firm release, but I suspect that based upon my experience with the 12nm the 16 nm would be to tight for me.

A digger loader is operational on Chappies.
  12. We re-use our safety pins down here.

They clean and sweep the entire route the night before the Argus. Cape Town Municipality have their sweeper trucks going out regularly at night/very early morning.
  14. But the PPA are in the Western Cape .......whine whine whine and I won't do the Argus.... whine whine whine. (obviously not aimed at you DJR).

I have not noticed any work being done.
  16. You might want to consider hiring a road bike. The Complete Cyclist in Hout Bay specifically caters for this over the Argus weekend.
  17. Regarding the headphone issue, there is a surfing product which helps. It's earplugs moulded to the shape of the outer ear. It has a small uni-directional perforation to aid hearing. It's designed to limit surfer's ear - the closing of the inner ear canal due to extended and prolonged immersion in cold water. It isn't very visible, cuts out the wind chatter and still permits hearing.

Only in winter. And, unless my maths is wrong, that would make it your 10th.

I'd prefer it on the 9th.
  20. I agree. A cyclist can generally see a runner from a distance giving the cyclist ample time to check the road behind him/her and to move over to give the runner room. Not so much around corners though, particularly on fast, mountainous downhills. I tend to go through tight areas very cautiously.
  21. I find that cyclists on Chappies are generally very well behaved with the obvious exception of newbie mtb-riding ex-golfers who have to talk very loudly so we can all be impressed at their low level commercial acumen. Runners tend not to use the verge where it is available and will often run in the centre of the lane. In groups, they often run 5 of 6 abreast. I have had two close calls where a runner has cut across the apex of a bend on a blind corner - if I were a car they would have been dead or at least severely injured. I tend to disregard people who do not comply with the law or common sense and say nothing, but I am always bemused by their aggressive and confrontional attitude.
  22. Just wrong on so many levels.
