I am getting quite a few requests from people asking me to say who our nominees would be.

I feel this forum should not really be the place for any electioneering, so anyone wanting the list of names can e-mail me at johno.metcalfe@gmail.com

Also would like to know as it is relevant..... pm me the names if you don't want to list them...

  2. Let's al pause for a moment. Maybe give it till tomorrow before posting again as this thread is now actually getting worse in what seems to have been prophesied by Duane.

Hashing and re-hashing is going to get us no where. Countless threads on Shimano vs SRAM to proof that.

    Cool! I am out......

  3. Hi Marko,

I'm not interested in getting into a slinging match, so I'll just state my case as diplomatically as I can then.

For the record, I didn't join this thread to win friends. Got plenty of those already :). My intention has never been to win people over to my way of thinking. We all have our own opinions. Mine are strong, but then I am very passionate about MTB'ing. I am not alone in those opinions btw. As stated previously there are many people who are to a lesser or greater degree dissatisfied with the trails. My comments are tame compared to what I often hear out on the trails. Standing by the trailside with a spade in your hands eliciting comments is unlikely to deliver many negative ones, or any criticism from passing riders. Perhaps a better gauge of rider opinion would be ongoing car-park or online surveys to establish a broader, more meaningful perspective. As far as I know, no such surveys have been carried out at Tokai in the past two years

What I did want was to get as many people aware of the upcoming AGM and encourage them to attend and play a role in the future of Tokai. Apart from publicly stating that I would nominate Deon for one of the seats, I haven't ever mentioned who my other nominees would be, so no-one could accuse me of leading any campaign here. I've also said that Deon might even be pleasantly surprised with some on my list. For the record, I don't want to be on the committee, in case that might be one of Deon's concerns. I prefer riding to online forums! I'm more than happy though to give what time and other resources or input I may be able to provide where needed.

I'm not sure exactly which part of my comments upset you but I can't apologize for them. They are my opinions and I have every right to express them. The most vulgar word I used was "crap". If the term "amateur" offends you, then stop to consider that the volunteer group, by its' very nature is indeed a bunch of amateurs in that it is an unpaid contribution from a body of people with limited experience and knowledge. This is not intended to be derogatory. The problem is that I would like to see trails as built by professionals. Not sure how much you get around, but there are some mind-blowingly good trails sprouting up all over the WC. If Tokai still left me feeling the same way I do after riding other trails, I wouldn't even be here (it used to). I firmly believe that given the same mountainside , same constraints and bureaucracy, same limitations in terms of mechanized equipment etc. there are builders out there who would have produced a much better experience (for all type and level of rider). I also believe that doing it that way would, in fact, be the most cost effective way of doing it.

  4. This is how it should have been done..........

" Hi Guys, Deon has worked his ass off for the last 3 years in Tokai. It seems he is struggeling with some of the trails, flow, buildt etc. Lets help by, getting the MTB club goin and support Deon with a more organized system. This way we can get better, more and maintained trails in Tokai. Going forward we would need our first AGM during which we can plan and strategize. Deon would be very valuable in such a club since he knows the procedures to follow with SANPARKS etc.........."

...........and if you don't agree you should not serve on a comittee that invloves working with people.

    • And anyone else who I've left out or wants to join but lets make it less than 20.

Let's get together on Wednesday night at Jakes. Say 7pm? Johno, Vince, Richard and I will be there. Let's get together over a beers and talk. There's more common ground between us than you might think. Let's clear the air and find that common ground. This back & forth on an internet forum achieves very little.

We don't want to look like tools in front of Sanparks.

We ACTUALLY all want exactly the same thing

    There is no hidden agenda

I know that most of you are volunteer builders and speaking from experience it's heart breaking when someone pisses on your efforts so I can fully sympathize with your emotions. I've been on that side of the fence myself. And those feelings do need addressing.

    Rika you come too.

Thanks can't make it have an Aikido class from 6-8....

I llike what is starting to happen and believe we are starting to move in the right direction.

  6. For the history go and read the WP downhillers FB page. It all started / flared up / spliied over with the closure of illigel trails in Tokai.

Good question, should SANParks not be involved in the AGM aswell?

  7. Might be a little late but relevant non the less......

I have a couple of questions for Vince / :

    1) The concerned riders – are they representing the full user group of Tokai or only the DH users, which is a small % of the users?

    2) What do you think SANParks attitude will be towards the club if the committee composes of guys that were knowingly building illegal trails in Tokai?

    3) Have notices been placed at the Tokai entrance so that ALL users are notified about the first AGM? Everybody don’t subscribe to the Hub or DH FB pages.

    4) What will this new committee do different than Deon? Yes I know they will build better trails but HOW will they do it. What is your plan? Do you have 20 guys lined up and ready to dig and you have your relationship with SANParks sorted? All requirements met that Deon had in place?

    My concerns:

    1) Only the DH will be represented in the new club resulting in 10% of the users calling shots for 100% of the trails

    2) You don’t have a relationship with SANParks – you were recently building illegal trails in Tokai – SANParks won’t trust you since you showed that you din’t give a damm about their rules before

    3) The “new club” members will disappear after 1 or 2 trails and then the rest of the users with sit with the resulting issues

    Going forward:

    1) Get a club going which represents ALL disciplines or form a Tokai DH club that will only look after the DH trails.

    2) The workings of “Tokai trail builders” should stay as is for the interim until the new MTB club has found its feet and provided a proper plan on the way forward and their intentions for Tokai

    3) Failing the above maintenance and trail building will drop to a null resulting in so much more issues for the new club

*** Wasn’t the new double black in Jonkers build in summer?

  8.

How about this - should mountain bikers (plural - many) be screwed over by a single mountain biker? That's not necessarily the case here of course, but if it is the case, which is worse, your example or mine?

How many years has there not been an AGM? Fact, there has never been an AGM. Questions: Have the current incumbents been managing the process properly from the money, to trail design to building to public participation? We don't know. The AGM and process after that will tell us.

All the naysayers point to dirty tactics, but no examples bar nasty FB comments are provided as evidence. There is however much evidence of paranoia and large chips on shoulders from the current incumbents

This is how things work in a democracy - we have a meeting and we vote - we don't waste our time bickering on the Hub throwing ludicrous conspiracy theories around.

    Its all pretty simple really.

So one guy managed to organize trails and maintenance without a tokai MTB club! Hats of to that guy. And the new club will have BIG shoes to fill. Based on they way that this situation is handled made me very sceptic to trust the "new" team..... POS has a good reputation and did alot of work...... the new guys? they are just throwing their weight around and criticizing.... I dont like the tactics and if this is they way the "new" tokai club will conduct business, i sure as hell wont trust them with tokai's trails. I hope you guys are in for the long run and that we don't read, in a years time, how XC trails and DH trails need maintenance and how tokais MTB club was nothing but a flash in the pan! Good luck, because we are going to need it.......

  9. So in summary......

    1. Deon builds "crap" trails but he is the only one building trails.

    2. Somebody else now wants "better" trails ( I specifically didn't say want to built better trails..... as there is apparently "other" means to built as volunteer days).....

    3. You want Deon to stay on and be you contact with SANPARKS as he has the know how and more importantly the relationship....something the "others" don't have.....

This looks like a loose loose situation to Deon..... He need to do all the hard work and sort SANParks out, and I promise you the first guy that will be blamed when no new trail can be built or maintenance is an issue would be Deon, because he is the SANParks contact...

The way in which this whole AGM came about is not on... yeah I read the nasty FB comments and can see whats going on.

I DON'T TRUST YOU GUYS BECAUSE YOU ARE SCREWING OVER A FELLOW MOUNTAINBIKER

  10. I hope you realize that most of us hate you right now

    hahaha!

But yeah, awesome bike! And even more awesome to hear that you're actually going to ride it, not just put it on display in your den so you can tell your friends how much you spent on a bike you'll never ride.

At the beginning of Jan I was down at Greg's shop and saw his replica standing there (not quite the same as the ones on sale, and some of the parts were used. Also there (hanging on the wall) was his Leogang World Champs bike.

And according to the guy in the shop one of the 23 bikes is headed for SA (being such a small DH community, we're all wondering why?! haha)

But yeah! Awesome bike! Hope it makes you feel like a world champ!

Do they still have the Honda bike there?
