  1. Hi there fellow hubbers, I currently own a "pimped" 2012 Momsen AL229 - it has gone through a multitude of upgrades and the only thing that is still stock standard is the frame. There is a possability that I may be able to pick up a pretty clean 2012 GT Karakoram 3.0 frame for a pretty good price (less than R500). The GT brand is one that I have always admired - and wanted but my only option at the time was the Momsen. My question, which frame would you guys say is "the better one" - or are they pretty much on the same level? My intention is to simply book my Momsen into hospital (my garage) whereby all her components will be donated across to the GT frame - but I dont want to go through the schlep if there will be little to no difference? Look forward to hearing from the experts...........
  2. With no rain for a good couples of days now, should not be too much of a mudfest.
  3. A company is nothing more than the people in that company, in this case the salesmen. You should not need to phone the owner every time you have a bad experience. Just a question, if you go somewhere and you receive bad customer service, which makes more sense, a rant on thehubsa or any other social media platform, or addressing it with the owner / senior manangement to resolve the issue whereby they are made aware of the situation and can then improve on the customer service they offer? Just saying....
  4. I do hope that you get hold of the owner and let her know so that they can address the issue. I too was there on Saturday - will be purchasing my daughters first bike from them - and the shop was crazy busy - which is the norm for them on a Saturday. I too sometimes become a little agitated with some of the responses that I hear from the youth of today, and I think that this guy was trying to fob you off - take it up with Joanne and sort it out.

  6. ScottC-M sorry to hear about the injuries bud, heal up fast and ride harder. A lot of sound advice has been given to your dilemma, and as for selling your bike whether it was given to you or you bought it - to replace it with another bike does not really make much sense to me? Although not in numerical order - Rule # 12 followed by Rule # 5 is applicable Building up a road bike from scratch is going to cost you more than you thought - I know cause I am trying to do the same thing as I type this. Interestingly enough, a mate gave me a Dura Ace 7800 groupset (minus STI's) and although the build is going to cost me more than I really wanted to spend on a road bike, I could not bring myself to the point of bombing the idea and selling the groupset that was given to me? One of those unspoken / written rules we live by? Then again, this will vary from person to person. Anyways, I have decided to press on with the build and will see it through till the end. If you checkout Gumtree or Olx - lots of indoor stationery bikes for sale and pretty cheap? Checkout cash crusaders also, or even better, take up one of the generous offers that have been made right here on this thread. Heel fast dude, and hope you get back onto your MTB soon.
  7. the replies to this topic was so easy to predict Have the brakes bled & serviced, check the pads for minimum wear, if you need to replace (or even if they are in good condition), give them a light sand on a P120 grit sand paper (i mean like very light sand) and finally deglaze rotors. BOOM, just like that problem solved - well for me and like 99% of all other Avid users....
  8. not so STD AL229 - has had a few more upgrades since the pic..... I so love this rig..... AL329
  9. cant speak for the quality from CWC, but I got mine from BuyCycle and thus far not issues, all holding up as it should....
  10. hey straatvark, from Euodia cycles, head past the hemel en aarde estate (will be on your right) and keep left of the barrier on the left. follow the black route all the way until you get a split (left takes you to the waterfalls and right is the blue trail i think) there is a farm house in front of you. Follow the blue trail from here on out, it will pop you out onto the tar road for literally a few meters and then you hit a right back onto the trail - you need eagle vision for the sign but its there. I did the black route a few times, its really a great route and if you can try do it even if it is once. An alternative is to go all the way to the waterfalls - once you get to the tar road (big dam in front of you) hook a right (dont turn left - its a very long road to nowhere) and then follow the dirt road to the main tar road. Hit a right onto the tar and a few clicks down the road you will then pick up the W2W section (this is the sign you need eagle vision for). Its a small sign around knee to waist height on your right. Happy riding - wish I was there doing so myself
  11. Forgiveness - only found about the Tower Run after we rode - apologies to all.....
  12. if I am not mistaken, there is a Biokinetics Centre at the Netcare hospital in Rosebank?
  13. rather look at a Momsen VIPA - dont get me wrong, I love the SC, but the cost is just insane. The VIPA I beleive to be a way better value for money product, and will deliver the same amount of riding pleasure. MY 2C WORTH
  14. FFS!!! He may as well as have gone in the buff!!! I am not sure which is more of a concern though, the insane sunburn, or the porno outfit?
  15. what boggles me is the difference in price for ultimately the exact same thing
  16. yeah i did see that, just thought that for those of us that dont have a spare chain or piece of flat bar lying around, this is a good alternative - now although I do undertake 99% of the work required on my bike, as well as my car myself, i oddly dont have either lying about
  17. for what its worth, this is one of those tools to remove the oil filter from a car. Cost a whole R50 from the local Midas, works like a charm
  18. oooh - sounds like a lekker sting operation in the making
  19. Of the three, I would discount the XC32 being a coil shock. That leaves the Raidon and the Recon Silver. IMHO, the deciding factor between these two would be weight, reliability and after sales serviceing (not in that order). In December I rode on a rental bike that was fitted with the Raidon shock, and to be honest it performed very well. If rental bikes are anything like rental cars, I can only assume that everything but the kitchen sink has been thrown at the bike so the fact that it still felt in good shape is something noteworthy. I have the Recon Gold on my rig, and I absolutely love it. My bike came standard with a very low end Suntour shock - the XCM - which is a big pile of steaming monkey s & ! t. It lasted me a whole 7 months from new before it had to be replaced. I was always dead against Suntour and swear by RockShox, but after my recent experience with the Raidon, I am of the view that some manufaturers make really bad cheap and nasty entry stuff, the XC32 is a way better bet than the Suntour XCM, but when it comes to the mid-range to top end products, they are all there and thereabouts. Therefore, my conclusion is that the deciding factor would be weight, reliability and after sales serviceing. I do believe that the Momsen will give you the best bang for your (your mates) buck. Good luck and let us know what he decides on?
  20. the trails are magnificent - spent nearly every day of my holiday riding the various trails, highlight was the Waterfall route and the W2W river single track - poured with rain the last 4 days i was down there, but it made riding just that much more fun. Enjoy, oh and if you are up to it, ride up Rotary Drive till you get to the signal towers (dirt road on your right once you reach the summit) ride past the towers (keep left of them) and follow the path wich very soon turns into an adrenalin rush from the MTB gods - this is the old DH track If you have any questions re the trails or where else to ride, chat to Riaan at Euodia Cycles - they are opposite the Hemel en Aarde Estate (very convenient as we stayed in the estate )
  21. so, I am gonna be down in Hermanus from 17 December till 07 January - plan to do a fair bit of riding in that time well as much as I am allowed . rideabike, do you guys still ride from the Engen, if so, please can you let me know the details. Sadly, my ride will be staying at home, so will be on a rental.
