  1. Both of my GT's are 1x10 (11-40t) which is purely a personal preference. Funny enough, the RS Recon Gold is the very shock I have on my old Karakorum and it too is an "adequate enough" shock. When building my Zaskar I was keen to try out the SR Epicon as they are very decently priced compared to their counterparts (RS & Fox), but there is pretty much no stock anywhere and they will only be getting in the new Epicon early 2018, so pulled the trigger on a Fox Factory shock for the Zaskar (so much for trying to save cash). Good luck with your purchase / decision and don't forget to post a few pics of your new rig for us all to see
  2. I would go for the GT, but I am a teeny tiny bit biased as I my old rig is a GT Karakorum but have recently gone the route of a Zaskar Carbon Pro. Both are complete custom builds, but nonetheless, the Alu Karakorum can take a solid beating and come out smiling and as for the Zaskar Carbon Pro - well in a different league IMHO. The one thing I do want to say though, is that my old Momsen had the same front shock as the ones in your original post and that shock did not last more than 4 months and it was poked? So, be prepared for that as a possibility - but I am sure warranty will have you covered. Can your LBS not swop out the SR shock and replace with a RS Reba, whereby you pay in the difference? Might be a viable option? I hear yo on going the secondhand route, but I do think that for around 10k, you will find a really decent spec bike - just got to be patient. Either way, happy trails
  3. Unfortunately there is not much in terms of public cycling bike parks in the area, however there is a fantastic development happening in the area which I am involved in and we will be launching October 2017. Its all hush hush at the moment, but as an avid cyclist all I can say is that it will be at least a 20km route, and in proper lowveld bush. Will keep thehub posted on the developments.
  4. Don't think the same incident, the one I saw was closer to The Trailhead, nearest roads being Blairgowrie Drive.
  5. The Spruit is frequented by all levels of rider, from the DH masters to the complete beginner. I guess what is not a challenge for some, is for another - whatever - just hope that the rider is ok, main thing right?
  6. That risk is a reality, you WILL FALL, not a case of IF, but rather when - called Skills Management . On a serious note tho, I really do hope that they are ok, and will be back on two wheels again shortly.
  7. The bridge just before it where all the roots are can be a little sketchy, especially with early morning dew on the roots, you could come undone done there pretty fast. I too noticed that the pedestrian gate is closed / locked, which Im sure there is a good reason for, but agree, it certainly was a better alternative for beginners and avoid the two bridges.
  8. On Saturday mid-morning (19 August 2017) there was a cyclist that took a nasty fall whilst attempting to cross the wooden bridge, about 500m up from The Trailhead en-route to Emmerentia. It seemed to be a very nasty bail as there were paramedics attending to him / her? Anyone know a bit more, what happened and how is our fellow cyclist doing?
  9. What a lekker challenge this was, loved every bit of it, except for the pipe that swerved into me in one of the open storm water drains, sending me to wipe out like a boss. As a result, my hanger was bent proper and had a SS for the next 30km. Poor dude felt very bad, and it could have ended badly for me - but I survived so not the end of the world. Yes the water points or lack of them were a joke, as with a number of the other issues already mentioned, but I am pretty sure it will prove for next year. although the lack of water points is a bit of a c@ck up. Overall, loved it and will def be back next year.
  10. here i was, just having a run of the morning Friday cuppa java - until i read this, coffee out of ones nose is rather unpleasent, shot for that BogusOne..... This must be "reply of the week" short, concise and very much to the point....
  11. JPC - Conrad (the dad) runs C4 cycles which is in that centre by McDonalds. His son Chaunce runs old / new Eagle Canyon Cycles....
  12. some of you may recall a post i made regarding C4 Cycles, and now that they own Eagle Canyon, well all I can say is good luck to them, but I dont see them being in business for very long. Their prices on stuff is ok, but thats about where it ends. I have had a mate take his bike back repeatedly to have his gears properly set on a MTB, and after much annoyence, ended up at Linden. Good luck Conrad and Chaunce, god knows you need it....
  13. its pretty sad though as he has just started up his shop / retail outlet and I really wanted to support the guy as much as possible, I have sent a number of my cycling mates his way, but yeah I'm dissapointed by them (him and his son). About a month ago I needed to fit a crown race and took it past them to do for me, crown race and fork was in the car and I happened to be driving past, so ANY excuse to stop at a bike shop. His son fitted the crown race with a BB tool (that half moon one for the shimano external BB) and ended up gauging the thing like you have now idea. Looked like it had been on a date with a chainsaw, had a similar discussion as with the ratchet system with his son who said if I wanted a new crown race I would have to pay for it. Conrad was around and overheard us and said it was cool, and replaced the crown race FOC. Anyway, onwards and upwards.
  14. this pic really does make me just want to hop on the bike and ride.... do the things that make you smile and love....
  15. Ok so to conclude, Gavin has just left my place, he replaced both ratchet systems which was very unexpected as I only expected him to replace the broken one. Big thumbs up to Gavin, I am a client for life. Now if someone could explain to me - in like bullet point form - how to edit the titel of this post, that would be great.
  16. i did not notice them the previous weekend, we cycled past there at about 8am on Sunday morning and yeah, the number of unopened cans was insane....
  17. Sorry for the hijack which is slightly off topic, but did anyone else notice the crazy number of Hansa beer cans just after Virgin active on the way up to Emmerentia. The place was littered with empty cans but what I was really shocked by was that there must have been around 40 unopened six packs scattered everywhere. I am guessing a nearby bottle store got hit recently.
  18. Gavin has certainly held the LG flag very high......
  19. C4 Cycles in Randpark Ridge, located in the shopping centre between CR Swart and Ysterhout on Beyers Naude
  20. my IT skills fail me, have no clue how to do that,
  21. a lesson I learnt very early in my retail days, no matter how big or small the issue, no matter how much or how little the customer spends, a happy customer is a customer for life.
  22. indeed, better known as customer service, sadly something that eludes most people in the service industry...
  23. Morning Hubbers, so I sent Gavin an email last night and at 07h30 this morning I got the following response from him: Hi , from what I can see the shoes look in good condition to me. I will be in RandPark Ridge area myself on Tuesday next week. If you give me your exact address I will bring a spare ratchet with me so I can fit it for you. Regards, Gavin Richardson FiTsportslab Pity the bike shop did not adopt the same approach, they would not have lost a customer.
