  1. Obviously he is on an outdoor track so any headwind/tailwind + Crosswind will affect him, it being bumpy also is an energy-sapper.

Although the power numbers may not be mind blowingly high, keep in mind that he would need to sustain those numbers for the hour - so maybe he had some left in the tank? I don't know - maybe he was absolutely spent....try and maintain 250 watts for an hour solid....

Wiggins had a huge support team - access to the best aero testing, power testing and the like - plus he had a bike custom built (as did Jens) so all those marginal gains add up to a big gain...

If I look at what Jean Spies has gone through to start being competitive on the track in world cups it is massive - and he is still a couple of clicks off...to the point where the aerodynamics of his shoes and socks gets looked at in fine detail, the lubrication on his chain and bearings.

So for Gert to pull of his effort took some doing and I think the record will stand for a while yet as I don't believe we currently have enough people hungry to chase it....

I agree. That's a mega effort. I don't know him but have ridden plenty on Hector Norris and similar track in Pietermaritzburg on a full TT bike.

Ignore the power value, to anyone that thinks its not so good. Go and try and ride at that speed on Hector which is *** bumpy as well. I reckon most won't even do 10min. Let alone 60min.

Chapeau to him and huge respect for going out there and doing it.

  2. There was a 92km race this weekend in Pretoria, cost a total of R180 to do it, same sort of profile. Glad I rode it.

We should talk with our attendance and really support these smaller events.

I also did this event. What a pleasure. R180 entry, collected number the morning of race, well marshaled with cones etc. Timed by Racetec, finished and then had beer and pancakes for less than R20.

I totally agree that we should support these more. Paying R400 for these other events is a complete waste for most of us. Huge efforts to get numbers, we don't normally stop at the tables anyway. And honestly no justification for more than double the price.

We had an excellent race and will happily drive from JHB to compete. Will definitely be back.

  3. I live in PMB and can say that there is quite a few groups that ride. Burgwheelers been the most prominant with multiple levels.

Although I ride with a different club, we all left from the steers across the YMCA this morning, must have been like three groups with atleast 12- 15 riders per group.

They also do a coffee ride from GMC (Greg Minnaar Cycles - Cascades) on friday mornings.

  4. Give us a shout when you are in the area. I am literally up the road in Beaulieu

Midrand Country Cyclist the are on the internet for details. They have both MTB and road rides over the week-ends.

Will definately give it a bash. They don't ride during the week?

Will also try the Kyalami race track.

Any opinions on which club to join?

  5. Midrand Cycle Club, they also the organizing club for 94.7.

There's also Kyalami race circuit for challenging but safe cycling

    Thanks, will check them out

Whereabouts in Kyalami are you moving too?

Not sure exactly yet, still trying to find a good spot to buy. I guess Kyalami Hills or Estate

  6. Good day

Having read through a previous post, I noticed that someone suggested a brand called Concept. I checked the website and the wheels look pretty good. Any reveiws? I am keen on getting some new wheels and I always like supporting someone locally.

    Anyone riding these wheels?

  7. My first Shova and did it in 3h27min. Started cycling again in mid-August and have been loving it.

Had a guy called Tim in front of me, he pulled me just about two thirds of the way. Pity his chain kept coming off.
