  1. I've got unfinished business to get my Ratel. Did 2009,2010,2011 and 2018. I recall my fastest was just under 9 hours, so not fast by any stretch of the imagination. If I can get my winter training going properly I'd like to give it a proper go next year to tick that ratel off my list.
  2. I have done business with Bike Market before. While offer received were lower than my asking price, it was definitely not low-balling. If you consider that they buy blind, (bar a few pics) and pay out even before you ship your bike to them, it goes without saying that they will manage their risk accordingly. I also saw their offer as the starting point for their negotiations and negotiated a higher price than their offer with success. No one is forcing you to sell your bike to someone who has not had the comfort of viewing or even testing it and there is wiggle room with any buyer. Its good old-fashioned Capitalism and the world can do with a lot more of it.
  3. This thread proves the opposite. People are willing to pay a premium on the true value of an item (the secondhand value) for: - Choice of spec, colour and size - Sales and product expertise - Warrantee - The option to finance the bike - A pleasant retail experience
  4. I try to keep it simple leading into race day: At least 2 days before: Thoroughly clean and check bike and all kit. On my checklist: - Torque all bolts - Check sealant - Check tools and spares - Check suspension pressures - Check bearings and pivots for play - Check brake pads Day before: - Confirm start time and race day logistics - Screenshot my CSA nr - Pack my post-race clothes - Ensure the car is fueled - Lube chain Race morning: - Simple breakfast (Pro Nutro works for me) - Leave giving yourself around 45 minutes ETA to when you need to enter your batch - Park, kit up and go to registration - If there is a decent coffee, have a flat white - Banana as a snack when I go into the start chute - Start up Garmin and double check that HR strap is picking up - Line up in batch with 5 minutes to go till chute closes - Say Hoopla and go.
  5. Is there perhaps a stat of % dropouts in the ACE that rode bikes less than 12 months old... ek wil gou iets check.

I've used it on occasion when going camping for in-between cleaning too and with the good old fashioned bucket, soft brush and chamois cloth afterwards does the trick. Its probably easier and quicker than trying to get a bike on a kombi roof (and cheaper, if you already have a towbar system). Off topic: It also works well to rinse my wetsuit and SUP after use.
  7. It's not suitable for all conditions. Height is an issue in certain areas, particularly with higher vehicles such as minibuses and Bakkies, never mind getting the bikes on and off the roof. Furthermore roof rack systems are less fuel efficient than tow bar mounted systems ( I own both and can attest to this). And don't forget your bikes on top when you enter a parking garage or your own garage. I use my roof mounted systems when I have more than 2 bikes to transport and will always use the towbar system as my preferred choice, even on gravel roads.

  9. I’ve opted for the Deore spec for my e bike rental fleet. I needed bikes that are reliable and fairly simple to use. To date they have been amazing. Where are you based? If you are in the Western Cape and want to do a drive out to Tulbagh I’m happy for you to go give it a good go on our local trails. I’ve also sold a few of these with zero comebacks and smiles all round.
  10. Help us out here Greg. Light, Garmin or ebike? Make, model, some pics?
  11. Just wait for bike hub pay to confirm that the funds have been received and cleared on their end before you ship.
  12. I would have gone with the Skyrim. Great after sales support from Titan and the transferrable warrantee on the bike means in theory its worth more in the event of an upgrade down the line.
  13. Friends of mine used them. Better specced bikes than what we have at home for rental options and super easy to mix up a holiday / work trip.
  14. You should have done the research before booking your ticket. Like others said: Rent a bike. It's a no-brainer really. For under R6k you get a very decent road bike for 8 days and you don't have the hassle with moving it around. I did BCBR in Vancouver a few years ago and if rentals were as easily accessible back then, I would have rented a bike for the event, no doubt. I remember lugging my bike box around on public transport, had to pay a moerse surcharge to fly from Canada to the US and could not find a storage place on our last day in NYC when our flight out was at 2am, so I was stuck at JFK since 12pm with nowhere to sit land side (no mugg & bean or even a takeaway).
  15. Lots of bargains out there. You can pick up a new one for just under R50k https://www.thebicycleservicecompany.co.za/bsc-online/all-bikes/mountain-bikes/trek-my23-slash-gx-size-m-penny-flake-8/?attribute_pa_colour=penny-flake&attribute_pa_size=xl&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21105048935&gbraid=0AAAAAqyyRwhzJYjMfNudd06-OecidL2sD&gclid=CjwKCAjwi-DBBhA5EiwAXOHsGZT13Chpf5q5hv9fwXvCyn4VtidPYPKEZO0Ftsx3167cUHjlYTeFzBoC2PQQAvD_BwE I've sold quite a bit on Bikehub in the last couple of months. My formula is roughly: Cost of new bike / 2 less additional 10% of reduced value for each year. I would have probably started at R29k for your bike and settled for around R25k. Upgrades seldomly equates to a better selling price. It does help to sell if your bike is priced similarly to a stock bike. Hope this helps and good luck with the sale.
  16. Alan also apparently spent most of the off season focussing on fulfilling his commitments with Jayco Alula. Switching codes is tough in all sports, which makes cyclists competing in multiple disciplines a rare breed.
  17. Humanity should really stop sticking warning labels on everything. Rider safety is first and foremost the responsibility of the rider. Years ago on a mining site there was a mirror at the checkpoint counter with a sign above it that said "Safety Starts Here". Riders should know their limits and perform within those limits. Switching cycling disciplines is always tough, and perhaps VDP should have picked a less technical race to get going on. Mountain biking was, is and always will be an extreme sport. Check your travel insurance closely next time you go overseas with your mountain bike. The fact that we get so few falls and even fewer injuries is a testimony to rider skill and conditioning, and equipment performing almost flawlessly under extreme conditions. It's the reason some of these bikes are selling for north of R300k.
  18. Geelslang, Leopard Trail (done in reverse)
  19. https://www.on-lynecomponents.com/products/holy-rail-260mm?_pos=7&_sid=36cadf9cf&_ss=r These are the bees knees. Various lengths and some great accessory options makes the Holy Rail my go-to for frames that are tricky with bottles and other accessories.
  20. My wife and I did the event a few years ago. Awesome race and lekker people hosting the event.
  21. Very valid points Conrad. A Facebook post is not adequate communication, and the cycling community is prone to overreact. Putting up proper signage about trail closure on site is the first step when you close a trail. Social media, newsletter and press releases then need to follow, and having an official on site to also communicate trail closure will also help in ensuring compliance.
  22. About R500m benefit to the Western Cape Economy for CTCT and around R560m for ACE. That's a Billion ZARs in the space of a month. Hardly to be sneezed at. With an estimated R24.5 Billion economic impact from Tourism as a whole in WC, this is 6.5% of that making it significant.
  23. Mesh laundry bag from Temu with Zip or drawstring. Wash with other sportswear. Alternatively zip tie the end of your pillowcase to keep the hydration pack and its goodies inside the pillowcase.
  24. Ergon SM Comp is my first choice saddle. I had to replace a saddle a few months ago and struggled to get another Ergon SM Comp, so I went for the Prologo Dimension NDR. I think it's my new favourite saddle.
  25. Bypassing the bike shop with a direct online purchase usually has a price benefit, but the downside is that warrantee issues can be a ball ache. I get that not all bike shops deal with warranty issues as well as can be expected, but I’ve been fortunate historically with major issues like frame replacements under warranty being dealt with with little or no fuss by my lbs.
