I don't mind bike shops and their new stuff. At least then you know what you're paying for. And you can scroll on if you're not impressed. What I don't like is when someone adds old, beat up parts and bikes and then say it's "as new", "hardly used" or "great condition" and then ask for 10 year old stuff what i can get it for new. Maybe if they check out the adds and see what going prices are for new and old they can get a better idea what to sell their stuff for.

Dirt road will be fine for 500m. Get wide tyres for your training wheels 23 or 24 mm just for peace of mind on that dirt stretch, will also help reduce punctures on the road and a little more comfortable for long training rides.
