  1. You just have to play a few acoustic guitars made from different woods to know that wood has a massive effect on tone. A guitar rosewood back and sides will be far crisper than one with Mahogany back and sides, which is a lot warmer. Speaker boxes are reliant on resonance the same as acoustic guitars. Wood movement with changing seasons is not a factor, otherwise all my guitars will be crooked at some time of the year. Wood does however move over much longer periods, so you need to compensate for that. We are not talking about building a run of the mill item here, there are certain criteria which are aimed for. MDF is for mass production, and gets fairly good middle of the road tone.

    FynbosMan

Heard at the KKNK that the capies have censored version of " Jou ma se P***." It is now "Jou ma se fynbos..." Just saying....
  3. Sorry for the "ass"umption that that you did not consider wood tone. Yes, I agree, the Les Paul should match well with maple, it already has a lot of warmth so you want to keep definition. Where do you buy wood? I am lucky in that Rare Woods has a branch in PE, so I can go and pick my own wood. I was lucky enough to find a maple plank with some faint curl in it. Used it as a fretboard on my current go to bass.
  4. Knock-off or not...they were bulletproof, and the blade was very good. I had a few as a teenager, and always lost them. Never got the privilege of one breaking, even after trying to use it as a throwing knife
  5. I used to see 210 easy just before puking, but now 195 gets me there
  6. Keep in mind that maple will make the sound harsher and more agressive, but not bad. Something like mahogany will sound a lot warmer. I would play around with different woods on the back panel. Even ash, spruce or pine (no jokes, the first fenders were made out of pine and sounded great). Remember that you are needing to look at proper tone woods for sound, similar to the way I pick woods when I build basses. BTW.....love the Alessandro.
  7. they are cheap chinese knockoffs from my childhood. They cost about R20 then. I know the proper ones (cannot remeber make) sold for around R250 at the time.
  8. If she is in the habit of looking after her stuff then Fuji has some real nice cheapies. They are quite plasticky in construction, but have some great features. Look for some extra optical zoom, like 10x. I saw some going for around R1k at Game not too long ago.
  9. Nope...it's a Carl Schlieper. The little crest does look similar though
  10. Have fun , and as Witkop outlined...don't overdo it at the start. You are starting a way of life, not meeting a deadline.
  11. Here's my dress-up Puma And my favorite braai knife...though it is a tad big
  12. I love the ergonomy of Puma knives....they just sit right in your hand, the balance is awesome and the blade is perfect....
  13. I actually have a tough choice to make if I want to try a different one....
  14. I have a few Puma's and Joseph Rogers (silver hardware). I carry a dinky little knife with a 1,5" blade for the occasional biltong or braai application. It only cost R120 and is tough as nails. Got it from one of those roaming sales people that tend top come and annoy you....
  15. Mine too....already in training for it
  16. It should, as the center of gravity moves lower. It depends on the amount of weight though. It could also be that you feel more liberated by not carrying extra weight on your shoulders.
  17. Is that the one that writes in space?
  18. How does it feel being rocked by Amadeus?
  19. This started out a fun little thread...but now my head hurts..
  20. And yet, for all that sophistication and depth and careful ,maintenance....only 62 voted That is the reality
  21. They are getting mega miles from Livestrong, and that will not change. The minor bad publicity they are getting from the doping issue is negligible. Just as a though....How much mainstream publicity is the Armstrong issue getting in the US media? Is it making headlines, or just footnote publications? Tiger Woods made headlines with his fornication, thus all his sponsors either cut back or dropped him due to image perceptions, but that is changing again. Morality has a short memory.
  22. I assume that the doper won.....
  23. Agreed, and also, if possible....go and do a proper basic First Aid course. Even if it means becoming a first aid rep at your company. My dad had a medical emergency on Monday last, and I was able to help him, because of a basic course I did.
  24. Already do...but only because Spar is 5 km closer, and is the better choice in Jbay (because one of my friends owns the Spar )
