  1. Sooooo many times, and not just me. Sad thing is he used to be the chairperson of one of the local clubs. Lost of the older guys still see the 11hours as the 'real' cut off
  2. The Comrades has had a motto of "everyone must run Comrades once in their lives", and "everyone can do it". This has been linked to an increase in final cut off, and also changes in qualifying times. I believe this has created a false sense of security, in that if you can qualify, you can finish. Even though I do agree that most 'sporty' people can finish it, I also think there are loads of people who do not commit enough to the training, and hope for a miracle on the day. There used to be a guy at work who has attempted it 6 times, and had one finish. He's total training (from Jan), including a qualifier, has never been more than 200km; and yet he cannot understand why he cannot finish
  3. I think most of them would find it extremely difficult to run negative splits, even if they had an extra 10minutes for the 1st half
  4. Interesting So best bet for a bronze is D and above, BR B or above
  5. I used to run with Asics Kayano, but at the current SA prices, I just can't get my head (or wallet) around paying that much
  6. Same here. With me being broken at this stage, and not being able to run, I tend to cycle with her on early/long runs
  7. To be honest, I never even give it a thought when I'm running, because I never have any valuables with me; but on the bike its a different story - always proactive and alert
  8. Sorry
I forgot to mention that this was back in the day when Comrades was still on Youth Day. Even though I’ve done a couple of them, my focus was never really on Comrades, but on marathon distances, so my last fast marathon used to be around April/beginning May. That used to be around 6-10 weeks before Comrades, which is (was) enough time to recover. With the “new” date, I wouldn’t do it after end March/beginning April. I still believe that one should get the qualifier out the way early on (without worrying too much about the seeding time), and then work on a seeding in your next marathon. I agree with Stretch/Andrew that for most, a lower starting batch that forces you to start slow is a good thing (depending on your aim).
  9. Only thing I can think of are tests linked to you ability to handle glucose. These (in order of best to worst as predictors) would probably be HBA1C, Glucose Tolerance Tests (GTT), Fasting Blood Glucose, or Insulin levels. You would know if you had a GTT done, as you drink a sugary drink, wait, and look at the blood sugar responses. I think for a lot op people it not related to this, but rather to the GIT and your personal ability to absorb the specific gel (coupled with dehydration, heat, etc.) I can get some gels in, others just make me want to vomit
  10. From what I remember they use prediction models developed by FirstBeat. Their prediction is based on current HR, max HR (predicted or measured by the unit itself), predicted VO2, and heart rate variability. As far as I can see, the accuracy increases over time, as the unit gets better data from various types of workouts/HRs/distances. FirstBeat claims accuracy of 5-7% once the unit has sufficient 'base' data. You can find more info on the FirstBeat website (search for the specific unit). https://www.firstbeat.com/en/consumer-products/features/
  11. Thanx Hacc I've actually always been a runner (more than a cyclist, and absolutely cannot swim), but have taken a little break for the last 16 years - last Comrades was in 2001. Hopefully I'll get back up there again soon
  12. Slow and steady will get you there
  13. How is the training going?
  14. After reading the last couple of posts, I've decided to also aim for next year's down run. Silly thing is I pulled my calve last weekend on a 10k run, and I could only start walking on it again on Friday
  15. I believe that if you can run a 'comfortable' marathon before the end of the year, you should be on track for Comrades the following year. Thats the way I've always done it - easy marathon to get the qualifier out of the way, and then a fast marathon in April/May to get proper seeding. To answer Crapet, I think tou should work your training towards a specific marathon end of the year/Early January. If you can make that, Comrades may be possible
  16. Hi Patch Your entries are sorted. Last I checked there were just over 30 solos so far, can't remember team entries, but check and update
  17. Pitty! How was the 'tracking' done? Live updates or a prediction based on previous times at timing mats?
  18. Congrats! I really miss my Comrades days
  19. Thanx for the update... I was worried about Hacc's pace a bit
  20. Congrats Vetties! Met al die training wat voorlĂȘ gaan jou Hub naam moet verander
  21. There is more detailed descriptions of the route and each stage available on Facebook, under albums. https://web.facebook.com/Waterberg-Extreme-MTB-419433181755276/
  22. The uptake for the team entries have been a bit slow, so we are running a discount on the 2-rider and 4-rider relay entries. Solo Entry - R2 350 2 Team Relay - R2 950 per Team 4 Team Relay - R4 150 per Team http://www.bouttime.co.za/events/20170922.aspx
  23. The total climbing is roughly 2300m. CX/Gravel bikes will be allowed. If there is enough interest, a separate category for CX bikes will be considered. No Tri/TT bars
