  1. Respect! Well done for getting through that from such an early stage. Hope you don't have any long-term damage but enjoy the recovery break anyway, you've earned it.
  2. Geez, well done on gritting your teeth through that and banking an excellent time in the end.
  3. A bit late but good luck to all the CT marathoners this morning. Hope to see some qualification times achieved on here later.
  4. Anybody else run the Brooklyn half this morning? That turned out to be a lot tougher than I anticipated. Lots of pleasant flats but also a long grinding uphill that sapped the legs in the last few km of each lap. Was pretty warm out there this morning as well. Didn't quite get the time I was aiming for but I'll chalk up some half marathon experience.
  5. Great news, have a good one and let us know how you go.
  6. I'm going to give the Brooklyn half a go. Haven't run a half in ages so will be interested to see how my times have changed. I remember it being a really fun distance, short enough to push hard but long enough to get into a nice rhythm. I haven't run a two lap 21km before so quite keen to see how it works out. You running either of those, Hacc?
  7. That's such a good summary of the stairs. They are awkwardly spaced so that you're constantly alternating between which leg you launch from, which is fantastic for balanced strength but it also breaks your rhythm and stride so you're constantly working. The hardest part for me, oddly, is the section from that leads across the road to the second section of stairs. I'm sucking in buckets of air at that stage and it doesn't touch sides.
  8. They're pretty brutal, for sure, but they must be one of the best bang for buck running workouts you can do. Bruce attributed a lot of his comrades success to those steps.
  9. I'm obviously a rookie as well but I can say that the 10 Westcliff repeats I did the other week absolutely trashed my quads. I've never had muscles that sore for the days that followed. I made sure I ran back down the sloped section on the side rather than the stairs after each repeat and by the fifth repeat my calves were doing those spasm twitches. I can only imagine how good those must be in building quad resilience for the down.
  10. On the note of watches and data, etc. Over the last few weeks I've taken to switching my data fields off and leaving my watch on either the clock face or just a timer. I've enjoyed my training more than ever, particularly the long runs where I now just run to how my body feels and tune out the pace or the distance. Even doing intervals today, all I had on was the timer screen and I just ran by feel. It felt a lot more fluid and actually turned out to be marginally quicker than my previous sessions.
  11. Four and a half months after childbirth? Lordy, women are hardcore. And not just happy to complete it but to run a fantastic time as well, big respect!
  12. Sorry to hear, Andrew. Did he give a reason for it? There's an excellent Physio in Linden called Mariska Van Der Merwe (+27 11 888 3018), she's really good with running injuries and not too far from your office (she's in 5th Street Linden). She'll at least be able to confirm the injury for you and give you a rehab plan. I like her because she's one of those physios that tries to avoid you having to come back rather than the kind that schedules you for a weekly visit over the next few months.
  13. I must have missed something, Stretch. What happened to you?
  14. I haven't worn an elastic version before but I did like the look of the NB ones at the Comrades.
  15. Sorry to hear that, Scott. My wife has been going through similar issues, just popped up completely out of the blue. Extremely frustrating, it's like living with a smoker who's just quit. Hopefully it comes right for you soon, man. If you can get in a few long runs towards the end of September you should be good to go, though.
  16. How's the knee looking? Have you got a marathon lined up for later in the year or are you going to hold off until Feb? Goals for the new season: Try and score a B batch seeding early at Kaapsehoop and then start running a lot and learning how to like downhills. I hate downhills. Wouldn't mind a crack at a half-marathon PB sometime. Haven't run a 21 in ages and they are a lot of fun.
  17. That's a really good distance, H. I'd be wary of doubling up to work and back in the beginning. I'm sure Uber will make its way to Middle Earth eventually but in the meantime you should be able to hitch a lift with a passing hobbit and his wizard friend. Your fitness will come quickly, especially with that as a midweek run. Can't you stash one of your bikes at the office for days where you run in and then it's a pretty easy cycle home?
  18. What's the distance to your office, H? Good going.
  19. I found it a great way to stop getting invited to the productivity-killing meetings everyone else seemed to love.
  20. Awesome, SeaBee, thanks for the info. Yeah, Mazama's are significantly lighter. I don't know what it is about Brooks but the colourways across their shoes look like they were designed by someone who's just been dumped and wants revenge on the world. The Sense definitely wins in the looks department and is lighter than the Mazama as well (based on a web search). I just need to get somewhere to try out the fit. I like a roomy toebox, which the Brooks have in abundance.
  21. I'm a 10.5 as well. The Kanadias felt like I needed an 11 though.
  22. And what kind of longevity have you had with your Salomons? Looking for a shoe that I know I'll get 800km out of at least.
  23. It's one of the things I love about the South African running scene, based on what I've read and heard from foreign runners. One guy I spoke to pointed out that back home people will regularly put 13.1 and 26.2 stickers on their cars and (justifiably) earn the revered title of "marathon runner" once they've completed the distance. He laughed that in South Africa if you say you've run a marathon, people immediately respond, with all sincerity, "Nice, did you qualify for Comrades then?"
