  1. Unfortunately the start mat stops logging times 10 minutes after the start. I'm not too stressed about it as there are still plenty of marathons between now and Comrades and I'm going to have to get creative to find more ways to screw up my results. As for my wife, she was only registered for the 21 so no result for her in any case but I'm happy it gave her the confidence that a Comrades run is possible. We've entered the Maritzburg marathon, which isn't as flat as JC but the lower altitude should help us get decent qualifying times. As for the nerves, I think it actually helped that she wasn't expecting to run a marathon. She didn't have any time to overthink it.
  2. So Johnson Crane turned from an absolute disaster into a blast. My wife was doing the 21 whilst I was hoping to sort out my qualification for Comrades after cocking up Soweto by running with the wrong chip. Like Hacc, we also got stuck in the traffic jam. It took us about an hour and 15 minutes to get from the turnoff to the parking lot. There's something supremely disheartening about sitting in your car on the way to a race you've prepped for and hearing the gun followed by a horde of runners down the adjacent street. My wife was pretty gutted, she had really psyched herself up to put in a quick half marathon time and she wanted to just turn around and go but I persuaded her to join me on the 42 course and use it as a training run since she's never done a 42 before. We got to the start about 35 minutes late, joining the back of the 5km fun run crowd and set off. It was actually damn pleasant running along totally empty roads for the best part of 45 minutes. I had been warned about the psychology of running a second lap on a course but to be honest I had enjoyed the first 21 so much that I was quite happy to run it again for the second lap. In the end my wife hit the wall at about 35km, which was to be expected as she'd eaten a very light breakfast, had no nutrition with her and found herself running her first marathon in the spur of the moment. I've never seen real pain on her face before but she dragged herself to the finish like a trooper. We got home in 3:33 on our watches though we didn't get any recorded time because we were so late over the mat but it was hella fun running her first 42 with her. I've now done two marathons and still don't have a qualification under my belt… my organization leaves a lot to be desired. So, hopefully third time is the charm. My bigger problem now, though, is that my wife wants to run Comrades so if anyone knows of an entry going come the transfer window please let me know. My poor kids are going to be running orphans.
  3. Yeah, if I'm honest I prefer my old 17s to my new 19s so was quite happy to pick the 18s up for my wife as she's burning through pairs prepping for Comrades. On the shoe booster thing... if someone had no interest in running, could they not buy a pair of R2k shoes using the benefit, return them and spend the money on, say, a hydration pack instead? Discovery would then still be paying them back for hitting their (cycling) fitness goals each month.
  4. Inadvertently found a loophole in the Shoe Booster yesterday when buying shoes for my wife. I bought her a pair of Brooks Glycerins, which she took one look at and told me to take back (in her defense I wouldn't want to put those fugly things on either). Returned them and found a set of Nimbus 18s at the yellow ticket sale for half the price of the Glycerins. Meaning I now had a credit that I could spend on anything in the store and Discovery would still pay me back the amount for the original shoes. So, theoretically, you can buy anything from Sportsmans Warehouse using the Shoe Booster.
  5. Which of the Brooks and Saucony models did you try?
  6. For those of us that missed the 2O entries, what is Om die Dam like? Suitable as a long distance prep for Comrades or would one need to add in a 5km there, 5km back to make it more effective?
  7. Going to do my first next year. I've been keeping a base of 60-70km a week for the last two months, which I'll maintain until January (will ramp it up before Soweto, my first marathon, and then take two or three weeks off) and then I'll begin building properly towards Comrades. What are they longest training runs you guys do before Comrades and how far away from the race do you do them?
  8. Rat Boy is there to balance out Gwin. For example, here's Gwin having a good time:
  9. Agreed. They make my old Shimanos feel like a jellyfish stapled to a stick against the wheel. The balance of power and modulation in my RS is just absolutely perfect.
  10. Hey Scott, happy to let him have 1st dibs. My training is going well, very comfortably up to 60km a week now, but I still have this fear in the back of my head that a Comrades could be too much too soon and maybe 2017 is the more responsible option. I'm going to carry on training but happy to leave the substitution window up to 'fate'
  11. I've serviced my DH bike on the same Tork Craft stand plenty but it's not exactly solid. It holds it and everything but you can tell the stand is straining, especially when tuning the gears. I later bought a second stand for easy transport to races, X-Tools prep stand, which I way prefer. Far quicker to set up and adjust and way more stable. Also very light and collapses pretty small for travelling: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/en/x-tools-home-mechanic-prep-stand/rp-prod10226 It's priced similarly to the PCS 9, I think, but it is obviously a lot easier to transport.
  12. A shuttle with Sharj is like a ten minute mushroom trip. Lots of giggling and nothing makes much sense. What a character, hope he does well.
  13. Ban oom for life... or ten years, whichever comes first.
  14. That's a false analogy, Hennie. What is your argument, exactly? Are you proposing that rules on violations be relaxed for professionals or that amateurs be subjected to more stringent testing?
  15. The same rules maybe but not the same stringency. There is a lot more leeway for a casual participant who in all likelihood has ingested something by mistake than there is for a professional. Likewise, a doctor is held to much higher consequences for their misdiagnosis than your friend who suggests that maybe you just have a cold and should drink a cup of concrete.
  16. The difference is they are professionals. As in, this is their profession. Their job is to study the list and know what is going into their bodies. If they go to a doctor and can't be bothered to either get them to cross reference the list or check it themselves then they aren't fulfilling the criteria of their profession.
  17. Very cool of you, thanks! I hope it doesn't come to that though. Good luck with training.
  18. Geez, that's a great time! Nice work.
  19. Went a couple minutes under 1:40. Comrades training begins tomorrow
  20. I'm going to run the half. It will be my first since 2014 I think. Last time was the Pirates Over The Mountain, which was a 1:48. I've made a deal with myself that if I go under 1:40 I'll commit to Comrades. I think a 1:45 is more likely though. We'll see. Good luck with the full marathon.
  21. Fantastic, thanks Ferret. I wasn't aware of the sub window. Will keep upping my mileage then. Currently only on 50 per week but increasing steadily and easily at 10% and feeling strong and injury free.
  22. Rookie error. Decided I'm feeling strong enough to run my maiden, logged onto website for more details… entries capped. Oh well, 2017 it will be.
  23. But heavy! Especially when you're coming from a lightweight FR or TomTom. That said, it's bound to feel like a clock weight on my T Rex arms and bigger built guys won't notice it as much I'm sure.
