  1. This is like bedtime horror stories for Comrades runners. Glad you're okay, dude.
  2. I'd go nuts not running for three weeks after a half marathon. Or nearly a month and a half after a marathon.
  3. I really don't know enough about running to comment on most of those but my instinct would tell me that the type of training is far more important than the numbers. I also think different people reap rewards at different weekly mileages. Some guys are going to run themselves to pieces on 160km a week but I know of others who thrive and run sub 7 hour Comrades. The recovery of one day per km raced also sounds a bit overkill.
  4. Going to see how the heart rate feels on an easy 8km today and then make a call. It's irritating, doesn't seem to get any worse but doesn't want to go away either.
  5. Good luck with the antibiotics. I've been in two minds about taking some as well. Developed a bit of PND and a sore throat and the doc prescribed me some as a backup just in case. Hopefully I can ride it out.
  6. Anybody else freaked out by how little running they're doing during the taper? I'm following the advice of experienced runners but it really is so hard to escape the psychology (that admittedly I've been warned about) that I SURELY need to be running more than this! Last week was 40km and this week is just 46 .
  7. Folks are going to give me a lift from their place in Hilton. I was considering staying with mates in Durban but I figure the familiarity of my parents' house and the fact that my dad has done a few Comrades (so he'll understand where to be by when) means the early trip is worthwhile. Plus it means he'll have to second me ????
  8. Scour the internet until you find a diagnosis that says you're absolutely fine to run.
  9. Finally feeling the benefits of the taper as the fatigue is slowly creeping out of my legs. Ran Parkrun yesterday after a pretty light week (mostly short speed work). I've been trying to figure out how to shave off the 9 seconds I needed to break under my long-term goal time. I ended up beating my PB by 43 seconds ????. Got a shock when I checked my watch at the finish.
  10. It's just a breakdown of the pace/effort really. Red = conserve heavily, Orange = take it slow, Yellow = run your easy pace, Green = you can afford to push a bit
  11. Born2Run has just released a couple of pacing charts. Here are the sub 12 and sub 11 hour charts that Trad Cruickshank put together. He's handily colour coded the areas where you should conserve and where you can push on:
  12. Buks often creates pacing charts that account for different speeds at different parts of the race. Perhaps pick some of the major points and write the ETA for that stop down so you know if you're ahead or behind. You can either do permanent marker on the arm or stick it on a piece of card. I've had my race number sewn onto my shirt with the top section left open so that I can use it as a pocket (thanks for the handy tip, dad). Would be a good place for a pacing chart.
  13. Have you kept an eye out on their site? They often have good deals on end of season shoes. I remember picking up some RoadX for R599 from them a couple of years ago.
  14. That 4km time is blazing though, would have been a comfortable mid 19s I'd imagine?
  15. I'm running with one. I did a 6 hour training run with it once after having worn it overnight to use the alarm clock. I think when I started the run it was on about 95%. I left the HRM and Bluetooth on and didn't pause it at pit stops. If I recall correctly, when I finished I had about 40 something % left, so I'm sure it would get you through a Comrades, especially if you turned Bluetooth off. Turning off the HR would obviously add extra hours as well.
  16. So Andrew Steer and I completed our own marathons on Monday night in a time of just 16 hours. Bumped into each other queueing to get our kids into school. So far I think that was my highest quality prep for Comrades. Also got tons of Comrades tips from Andrew, who eventually probably pretended to be asleep to stop me asking questions. I was keen to do the RAC 60km like many of you but in the end opted for the Born2Run 40km. I don't know why, I just had a bad gut feel about the 60. Maybe it was just an easy out but I think I was actually partly worried that if it all went too well I'd end up having already "run my Comrades". I'm not sure if that makes sense. Quick question, when do the rest of you intend to start your tapers? Two or three weeks out? And how much do you intend to reduce your mileage by?
  17. I'm of Scottish descent. My calves are built more for wading through bogs than running 88km.
  18. Not a fan of her since her comments on Caster: "When we talk about it in terms of (to) fully expect no other result than Caster Semenya to win that 800m then it’s no longer sport and it’s no longer an open race,” said Radcliffe." What did she say this time?
  19. Awesome link, thank you! This woman ran such a perfect race: https://www.strava.com/activities/315733570 Really consistent throughout and a strong finish. I think I'm going to base my strategy on her run.
  20. Anybody watching the closing stages of the Munga? Coming down to a close finish between Nicky Booyens, the Dutch runner Carstens Nielsen and Tatum Prins. Two women in the top three at the moment. I wish their Twitter feed was a bit more active, they're frustratingly quiet. Does anyone know if the runner can ditch their pack at the final checkpoint? Or at least jettison the non-compulsory items there? EDIT: And suddenly the GPS tracker updates and Bennie Roux is actually leading with Nicky Booyens. Tatum Prins in third spot.
  21. Yeah, that 50 sounds awesome. I've got a vague fantasy of a 100 miler at some stage of my life but I'm in no rush to get there. I think I'm definitely going to switch to trails for a while after Comrades.
