  1. Just wanted to say thanks to Admin for making the change, despite the overwhelming () response to my poll. Loving it already! Thanks, Andrew

    Helmets?

A great resource for researching and understanding bicycle helmets : Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute On their page on when to replace a helmet, they quote the following statement from MET: (own emphasis) Pretty interesting to see that one helmet manufacturer is actually trying to measure their helmets' lifespans. Some other good points to consider on that page, it's worth a read. When I was researching which helmet to buy a few years ago, I found one item interesting on their helmet comparisons page: their concern over the growing popularity of spiky elements on modern helmets (Bell Sweep, for example) and what impact this may have in a crash. Also worth a read. It is your head after all. Cheers, Andrew
  3. As already stated previously, I'm a big fan of the new layout. However, I'm finding one aspect counter-intuitive and difficult to get used to. Namely, the location of the page links in each thread: When I'm browsing forums, I tend to look for these links on the right-hand side of the page and I've missed subsequent pages of some threads on The Hub as a result. I generally find that these links are located on the right on the other forums that I visit. Browsing the site on a widescreen monitor makes the "problem" worse. I'd prefer to have the "Add Reply" and "Start New Topic" buttons on the left, with the page links on the right. However, I realise that we're all wired differently, so I thought it would make sense to have a poll about it to get the other users' feedback too. Cheers, Andrew
  4. Unfortunately, we are often surprised by the actions of others due to our own naiveté/trusting nature. I also put the stickers on my helmet, thinking "if there's a cool photo of me, I'll order it". Then I received the unsolicited photos from Action Photo. Though, as Edman said, you're accepting their Ts & Cs by using the stickers (I can't remember the wording, but there was some sort of usage notice on the pack of stickers). So they can basically make their own rules. Fair enough. The problem is that I see this form of "sales" as dishonest. So, even if there are photos that I may have ended up ordering had they not forced them on me, I feel ripped off. So I sent back the pack of photos. Oh, and I no longer use the stickers. Cheers, Andrew PS: They use this technique for other events too. I got a pack of photos from the Midmar Mile as well.
  5. Hi Admin, Add my name to the "Thumbs Up" brigade! Well done. The old site was really starting to look and feel very dated. Looking forward to the tweaks and improvements. Cheers, Andrew
  6. Thanks for this post. There is enough animosity between drivers and cyclists without us giving them more excuses to be aggressive towards us. I now stop every time, even if it means losing my group. Hopefully this will influence the behaviour of other cyclists. Cheers, Andrew
  7. Hi Fruitloop, Thanks for the news report. Good to see that this accident is getting good press coverage. Damian's brother is posting in this thread: https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=83422 Cheers, Andrewandrewc2010-04-30 07:36:40
  8. And for those that speak the "acceptable/approved" language: SAA steward in Afrikaans spat Groete, Andrew
  9. Hi Schwynn, Gutted by your loss. Hoping that this will you cheer you up a bit. Hope it all turns out well for you!
  10. For non-Durbanites, this made the front page of The Mercury today: Cheers, Andrew

    Help me

I can't see anything wrong with the formula. What is it doing that you don't want it to do? It will subtract the value in B2 from G6, but if you copy this formula to another cell, it will always subtract the value in B2, while the other cell reference will move relative to the original cell's position (as if that makes any sense). Post what you need it to do... (or what it's not doing). Cheers, Andrew

    Help me

    =if(isna(VLOOKUP(D6,'Entry Details'!$A$2:$C$478,2,FALSE)),"",VLOOKUP(D6,'Entry Details'!$A$2:$C$478,2,FALSE)) or if you're using Excel 2007 (I assume you're not, but I had to test it on my PC): =IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(D6;'Entry Details'!$A$2:$C$478;2;FALSE));"";VLOOKUP(D6;'Entry Details'!$A$2:$C$478;2;FALSE)) Cheers, Andrewandrewc2009-09-07 12:30:14
  13. That's not unique to the Cape. The useless, discourteous drivers here in KZN are the same. You can see that the lanes are reducing from 3 to 2 up ahead, presumably due to road works - so they are both dicing to "win" the honour of being the car in front. Idiots. We've got them too. Cheers, Andrew
  14. Your front wheel runs on top of the front roller, so there's no way even the tire will make contact with that pulley - unless you're in the process of falling. Cheers, Andrew
  15. You're not joking there! I was going to buy one of the Magnetic Resistance add-ons when I was planning to buy my rollers - glad I didn't. It provides more than enough of a workout as it is, without adding resistance. A half an hour on the rollers flattens me more than a 65km Saturday ride. But I suppose one day I may find the workout too easy - anything is possible. The big plus for me is the improvement in technique and stability that is carrying over to my road riding. It's not for everyone, but I find it to be a great tool for improving my riding. Cheers, Andrew
  16. First, by selecting higher gearing. But once you end up "spinning out" often, you can add one of these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Images/Models/Full/31104.jpg Tacx T1350 Speedmatic Magnetic Resistance Cheers, Andrew
  17. Not if the only one left is in Cape Town!
  18. The "belts" on the commercially available units (mine is a Tacx) appear to simply be large o-rings. From a quick search on the internets, it seems that o-rings up to 740mm inside diameter are available, so Bearing Man should be able to get hold of an appropriate size o-ring for you. Obviously, you don't want to buy o-ring material, cut to size and glue it... Interested to see how this project develops. Cheers, Andrew

    Help asb.

Hier is nog 'n "online" les (deur Park Tool), maar jy behoort reg te kom met die Bicycle Tutor les wat Mampara gegee het.
  20. Thanks Johan, I always enjoy the Workshop Stories - and keep an eye out for them. Your effort to share your experiences is appreciated. There seems to be much to learn in the cycling world where marketeers seem to have the final say in engineering designs. I saw a similar trend in the scuba industry where kit was marketed that served no real purpose and made no appreciable improvement over other designs, other than being New! and Improved! In some cases, these New! Improved! designs were downright dangerous. Of course, I'm not saying that Rolf wheels are dangerous (but I may say that about a certain model of French wheelset where the marketeers have had a field day...). Cheers, Andrew
  21. Prayers and thoughts with Sifiso. He's one of the best cycling ambassadors that South Africa has. Get well soon, Sifiso! Andrew
  22. Man, can I identify with this...! Cheers, Andrew
