  1. The thing is, I don't think they too sharp. They feel sharp for sure, but not surgical blade sharp if that makes sense. So i was a bit surprised they chipped. In fact, i've been sharpening them till they feel like the blade that shipped with the Lie-nielse no62 low angle plane. That thing is silly sharp! random stuff: handy guide to identifying your stanley bailey handplane. turn's out, that resurrected handplane is a type 19. https://woodandshop.com/identify-stanley-hand-plane-age-type-study/
  2. some input needed: chisel and plan edges chipping off. I spend quite a bit of time sharpening my chisels and the blade of this one particular No 3 plane that i resurrected. Two grades of diamond stones with a final polish on an 8000 grit waterstone. Of late however, I've been noting chipping of the tips. Reminds me of the odd occassion I hit a hidden nail or screw. But I haven't hit anything metallic. There's no denting, or bending over. Just chipping. I'm beginning to wonder if the tip is too sharp. But given I'm following the as-made angle of the various bevels with no micro-bevel, i'm beginning to wonder if the material is too brittle. The chisel in question is blue plastic handled Stanley set I bought a very long time ago, and the previously mentioned resurrected stanley No 3. I have a set of narex chisels that I sharpen exactly the same way, but i haven't use it recently to see if they suffer the same fate.
  3. Holtey planes. jeepers. http://www.holteyplanes.com/images/982-Exploded-view.jpg http://www.holteyplanes.com/images/no984_3040.jpg http://www.holteyplanes.com/images/lastA31a.jpg
  4. look into DIY rust removal via electrolysis. Saw a youtube vid recently, and the results were staggeringly impressive, and only using 1 AA battery overnight.
  5. Mr Mercedes. catchy start to this new series.
  6. started watching a couple series featuring some big screen names: The Sinner - Jessica Biel. Only one ep so far. interesting enough. Somewhere Between - Paula Patton. 3 Eps available so far.
  7. maybe i should've said next next best
  8. but for the sake financial constraint: what would be the next best lower down on the pricing scale? While I would love a cabinet makers table saw, I just can't justify spending that much on a single item, yet.
  9. Thanks for reminding me about sewing machine oil, which i think is generically referred to as light machine oil. Youtube gurus like Paul Sellers believe in their rag-in-a-cans: can stuffed with absorbant cloth and filled with light machine oil. He uses it as a roll-on for his tools.
  10. I'm pretty sure he meant to say there is no universally optimum cadence. but IIRC, studies have indicated that if the bike fit is good, most cyclists perform at their physiologically optimum levels when the cadence is higher, say in the range 85 - 95 rpm. However, there are always exceptions, and ppl need to find what works for them. Based on my personal experience, I think the effect of crank length is often overlooked because many riders still get hooked on the longer crank is a better crank 'philosophy.
  11. was pretty darn intense. Shot for inadvertently reminding me to watch it. its like a movie version of The Night Of. Despite the parallel theme, its still damn good viewing.
  12. what oils/fluids y'all use to keep your hand tools, blades etc rust free? Any WD 40/ Q20 users? What about jojoba oil?
  13. enjoying salvation, Private eyes, and goddam, Suits has found its mojo again. But one thing though: maybe i'm seeing things, but ever since the relationship with Harry became public, there's an distinct lack of on-screen intimacy between characters rachel zane and mike ross. Any cleverman fans out there? what's the take on S02?
  14. i'm surprised the show directors/writers haven't applied for a trademark on that phrase.Time to play that counting game again.
  15. Suits S07 just fired up. Seems the TV show drought is finally seeing some rain clouds.
  16. i was pretty stoked to see QC, got the beta, played it a bit. nice and fast. Pity my ping was a bit *** at the time, but i think i could grow to like it very quickly, especially if jamming in a LAN, and doubly so if they bring back Instagib. YUMMY!
  17. i unwittingly solved that problem by playing a *** game like CSGO. After a few rounds, i'm klaar for the day. Not tired: just vrek bored. In general though, my days of jamming from friday night till sunday morning nonstop are well and truly over. But a VR kit could challenge that. But then there's that eternal inner battle between spending on bike stuff vs PC stuff vs The Rest
  18. not lab level accuracy, but workshop level accuracy as per BS 939 or the equivalent DIN standard. So yes, repeatably accurate cuts, markings etc are very desirable. In what range do you think sanding and finish planing exists? Definitely sub millimeter, and visually, accuracy is the difference between an ok piece and an envious bit of craftsmanship. I ain't the latter by any measure, but i strive for it. In that regard, an accurate square is a damn good start.
  19. buy once, cry once right?
  20. I'm still on-board.
  21. sweet! thanks PP!
  22. Thanks for the suggestion. Was looking offerings with more immediate availability. I find it surprising locally manufacturered stuff is not easily found. Any suggestions in that regard?
  23. any suggestions on where to locally buy a machinist/engineer's precision square, sizes 100mm, 150mm, 300mm BS 939 grade B, or DIN 875? Toolcraft offers Groz in 100mm only, and Nobex adjustable squares in various, longer lengths. I'm a bit skeptical of the accuracy of anything adjustable tbh, hence the quest for a precision engineers square.
  24. After the Kevin Pietersen drama, I've been wondering if the pattern within the then English team is being played out within the Proteas as well. It's clear that AB is a phenom, but KP drama broached the question: can someone be too good for a team? Maybe for different reasons, but if the end effect is the same (unfocussed team), then the answer could very well be: Yes. AB is too good for the current team. As an individual contributor with the bat: immeasurable value. as both a brilliant batsmen and senior team statesmen, that's when things are starting to skew for the AB and protea brands. AB has such self conviction that he is a capable captain, it becomes very hard to disagree especially if one looks at rest of team contributions to recent failures in just about any format of the game. But his blindspot seems to be around team cohesion when there's a crisis. He seems to lack the ability to inspire, likely because his level is just too damn stratospheric. How can anyone find confidence in having to aspire to be less? They should drop him as captain in all formats, but i'm afraid they've taken so long already the sting and the stink of it will disrupt them further, leaving them with the nuclear option, as was dropped on KP: drop him from the team entirely.
  25. one of my mom's late cousins served in the afrika corp. lots of stories to tell, normally starting with how he got the huge bronze/brass shell casing standing on his mantle piece. While utterly fascinating, its clear: i wish war upon no one.
