You don't mention how tall you are, perhaps the XL is the correct size but settings need to be adjusted. You also mention the bike you were sold had V brakes, a good set of V brakes are much better than mechanical disk brakes and will have you coming to a dead stop even going over the bars if pulled hard enough, they do suck in wet and muddy conditions though. The LBS could have span you a story similar to a colleague i work with, last year he was looking for bikes for him and his son to ride together on the weekend. He mentioned they would use the bike for tar riding but did not want a road bike and would prefer a MTB type. A Hybrid would have been better but he was sold 2 DS 29'ers costing around R30 000.00 each, if he has done 100km riding to date its a lot.

As a rule i don't start a training ride if it's raining but if iv'e already started i will continue unless it gets really bad and on the highveld we get some crazy thunderstorms which turn trails into muddy streams, I don't mind sand type mud but hate the clay type mud which really sticks.

I've tried with Kenda small block (wire bead) on Alex wheels, its difficult to get the tyre to seat properly and by the time i did i lost most of the sealant, fitted maxxis and the tyres held even without sealant.

Been riding 26" with slime tubes since i first started MTB +/- six years and in all that time i have never had a flat in a race and only a few times in training. My 29'er riding with RR evos's and slime tubes i punctured my 1st ride, again a week later and quite regularly after, so i converted to tubeless and Geax TNT's and going on a month now have had no flat tyre issues.

Not sure what make mine is i was given it by my LBS, it has a little rubber knob you press after pumping which releases the air trapped in the pipe, tested it by re attaching and checking the pressure and it's correct.

Some MTB shoes look like takkies just dont fit the cleats and leave the cleat cover on, i had a pair of Addidas like that.

I think its rider specific but for me i find the 29'er easier supported by my last 2 races. Last week i did a hilly one on a 29'er and found i climbed easier than one i did on Sat on a 26 which did not have as many climbs.

Definitely looks kicked in. If it was rider damage caused by a fall someone at the school will be walking with a limp and cuts and bruises.
