  1. I got a locally manufactured trail moose insert from Hellsend bikeshop about a year ago. It saved my back wheel a few times but could kick myself for not putting one in front too - trashed the wheel with a rock strike. Love the peace of mind and it far outweighs the marginally different feel. Do need a bit more sealant and it does make it more difficult to get tire on/off the rim.
  2. Imagine if RCYC had a "Social" membership which could grant holders access to enter the harbour but not make use of any of their facilities!
  3. My daughter sent in her old vivoactive 4S with battery issues and they've offered a Venu 3S for R3080 (excl shipping) and they retail for about R7800 I think it depends on what obsolete or soon to be obsolete models they have in stock
  4. The area alongside the N1 is Sanral road reserve and doubtful the city will be able to get permission to build a lane there but through the port appears a more viable option. I'm sure John Maytham on Cape Talk will be happy to run with this, especially while it is pre CTCC buzz. If anybody has video or photo footage of the bike lane from the past few weeks, please dm me (I went through there in a group last month and it is shocking beyond belief)
  5. Ditto - orange only (lemon tasted good off the bike but on the bike is like battery acid) I also throw in a biogen electrolyte if riding more than 2 hrs. Racing I'll sometimes use cytogen but dilute it a bit more than recommended to keep it palatable.
  6. I'm resurrecting this thread as it appears the Bikehub community collectively has more collarbone experience than your average orthopedic surgeon 😂 Has anybody had issues with a swelling above the clavicle some time after a plate was put in? If so, are you living with it or did you get the plate removed? (or was it something else?) My plate has been in for 3 years and a substantial swelling popped up above the collarbone late last year. Sonar shows it to be a fluid filled cyst and the doc suggested a ct scan and debating to go for CT first or to go back to surgeon first.
  7. Maybe a daft question but what's the deal with the "Kings of the Atlantic Seaboard" category and how do teams qualify?
  8. Impeccably organised event yet again, well done to all. Wind was more of an issue than expected and would be interested to know if that combined with the heat created a higher attrition rate than usual. Gees and teamwork was apparent at all ends of the field and thank you so much to Coimbra for allowing dropped riders to join in your train. Lots of sore and tired people hobbling around this morning but it was all worth it.
  9. Thanks for the sellotape suggestion, it took most of the flaking off the outside. Soaked the lenses in cold fresh tap water for an hour and the coating on the inside is now 90% off and using sellotape on them too. Far from a new set of lenses but they're usable. Wonder what all the coating does or if it's just aesthetics ...
  10. For some of us, the fit is an issue. I have a narrow nose bridge and have tried Salice, Rudy Project and Adidas and if I could get their quality with Oakley's fit it would be awesome.
  11. I purchased radarlocks in immaculate condition on BikeHub a few days back - immaculate condition and 2-3 years old. Saturday's ride was very misty so took the gogs off my helmet when the sun appeared to find the moisture from the mist had caused the coating on both the outside and inside of the lenses to bubble and peel to the point I couldn't see through them and touching the lenses left glittery coating all over my fingers. Unsurprisingly I didn't get anywhere with Sunglass Hut (even If I had proof of purchase and they were less than 2 years old, "it's the soap you cleaned them with , the sunblock you use, your hair products, the way you store it, .... but Oakley's never fail"). I've previously tried Revu replacement lenses but they're very thin and distort badly. Any suggestions on how to get the rest of the coating off the lenses so they can be used again? I've tried the microfibre cleaning case but it only gets the loose pieces off. Btw, if you purchase Oakley replacement lenses from Sunglass Hut, they have no warranty even with proof of purchase, only complete glasses do.
  12. Property size is given is a shade over 5000sqm and lists all the buildings (restaurants, house, labourers cottages) so doesn't look like the whole farm is on the market.
  13. Stage has been stopped due to heat and believe waterpoints have run out of water. Riders who reached various cut off points in the allowed time will be allowed to ride tomorrow. Must be hectic for riders, supporters and organisers. Website shows 106DNF's for the day and 200 teams still on course.
  14. Spent quite a bit of time on the route today and it has been a day of attrition as it so often is on stage 1. Most mid and back of the pack riders portaged most of the Rhino/mast climb and it was difficult to be an upbeat spectator when you know there's a whole lot more climbing ahead, mostly on unforgiving surfaces with some tough gradients. Notable mentions go to ... the tandems (I think 2) with blind stokers. The german bloke riding in a speedo 4 amputees that I counted and the one riding without a prosthetic leg some amazing partners and team work, even later in the stage when the mojo disappears the pros and top amateurs who still find the energy to interact with the crowd while racing at the sharp end of the field
  15. Hi all kingjreid is advertising a bike and ad says "w/a only for more details" which I presume means whatsapp but there's no phone number and this seller isn't responding to BikeHub messages. If anybody knows how to get in contact with him/her, please can you assist me
  16. I think we're sometimes too quick to adopt the "one size fits all" approach and fasting is no different. While it works wonders for many people, don't beat yourself up if it doesn't work for you. Ladies (and hubbies /partners who read this), fasting and intermittent fasting doesn't work the same way in women as it does in men. I attempted the IF approach and suffered from zero weight loss and a loss of muscle and strength. Having researched a fair amount, I came across Dr Stacy Sims (exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist unlike "doctors" marketing themselves on social media such as Dr Mindy Pelz, Dr Sten Ekberg and Dr Eric Berg who are all Chiropractors). She gives sound scientific advice based on peer reviewed studies and it is well worth watching this video, even if you do it in chunks over a few days.
  17. I see there's late registration but are there late entries?
  18. There like a bear - did the event earlier this year and loved it and will definitely recommend
  19. Choose a helmet which fits your head properly as the advantages of mips will quickly be negated by an ill- fitting helmet. Heads come in different shapes so you may need to try a few brands to find the right fit.
  20. Remember getting an autograph from Willie at Paarl track back in the 80's and 30 years later got to go on a memorable but very wild night ride with him. Much as he had his demons and was not always one for following the rule book, Willie was generous almost to a fault. His passion for cycling was contagious and without him, our sport would have been so much poorer. Willie, you are lost but never forgotten.
  21. Introduced our daughter to cycling on a half wheeler and it worked a charm. Turning circle is a bit big so stuck to tar and dirt roads. She's now 17 and shreds tech trails and joins me in 70km+ rides and loves cycling. We think the half wheeler had a big role to play in this.
  22. A clever local clothing manufacturer will read this thread and realise there's an untapped market for shorts with a more durable lycra, even if it is at the expense of appearance. Maap makes a bibshort which is "Non-see-through function [fabric won't thin over time]" BUT be careful as there's a very dodgy Maap SA site which is not legitimate. Agreed there is a quality issue (4 year old Ciovita's still good but 1 year old are transparent), it affects multiple brands (had the same from a year old pair of castelli's) and definitely agree it is a sweat thing and wonder if there's a genetic component as all my cycling blood relatives have the same issue. Needless to say I have 2 pairs of outdoor bibs and about 6 pairs of see through IDT bibs
  23. Yes, what custombikewheels said. Cracks at nipples will be very clear (went through 4 crest rims) but those still look good.
  24. Meanwhile at the other end of the field ... 517 teams finished 156 individual finishers Carnage in the heat
  25. Fit first - head and helmet shape need to be a good match and must sit firmly (ie ratchet and straps must work too) Weight - after 3+ hrs in the saddle, extra weight on the neck can be an issue. Lighter helmets tend to also be cooler Crash warranty Price, brand, looks, MIPS - equally important but wouldn't go for an unknown / unproven brand
