  1. No I don't think so - I gave up after many years and Uwe and Neville also did not stand again!
  2. Then vote! https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/122825-ppa-how-much-funding-should-the-association-retain-annually-ie-not-spend-on-cycling/
  3. They not a racing body - they put harly anything into racing anymore they use to fund the Giro del Capo and make the league "better" - so this is true!
  4. To a degree - it is easier to do nothing and thus hopefully avoid criticism than doing something and be criticized! This is not only PPA but in many aspects of life! Their are several agenda by people on the committee, but ultimately if their is no funding allocated - it is hard to get anything started or even sometimes keep things going (Giro del Capo). Biggest way you get nothing done is say to a fellow committee member - write a proposal - as most of the committee don't have time for this and then only to see a few proposals been accepted (funded). Ultimately not doing anything and keeping the bank balance more positive will end up meeting some of agendas of some on the committee and will be applauded at the AGM! But when does this agenda become destructive to cycling i.e. more could be done if funds were been made available without so much PT to access them? If the core business is for PPA to organize funride (and most of the excess funding come because of a road funride - ACT) surely now a storm big enough has hit with a lot of the road summer funride been cancelled for PPA to step up to the plate even if cost money to organizer with or without partners funride on road which are available. Most of the organizers have set venue and thus cannot just move their funride to the northern sub - but this does not mean PPA could not organize funrides in these areas!
  5. But we can and should keep getting good! WP cyclist are very lucky because of a few hard men in the 90ties who managed to trade 50% of the ownership of the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle with Rotary for instead of just 10% of (if I recall correctly) entry for 50% of the profit of this event. This is a road cycling event which PPA is the cycling beneficiary off - over the past about 10 years PPA has not been able to spend all the money they have got from this event (well they could have if spent more if they kept events like the Giro del Capo going) and just been investing (wisely), but not it's time (hopefully not to late) to invest in road cycle. We getting to the possible point where the statement don't bit he hand that feeds you may come into play. How successful will the ACT really be if it the only road fun ride left? The other part of PPA which has been successful is the fact we PPA has a calendar - but if this calendar is not been filled - some other private promoter will come in and put on events and yes the entry will by 2 to 3 times higher - and we the WP cyclist will just have to suck it up because they will be the only road event - PPA really do need to consider funding road funride / races next summer season! Just because organizer are based in certain areas and have venue in these areas and now these venue are not suitable due to road permission - PPA is quite capable of filling the calendar with other road event in other areas - whether they put them on themselves or partner with other organizers! This we a the road cycling members should be "demanding" (I hate using that word) they do. We as the road riders should not be short changed! It still surprises me that PPA organizers fee for road riding is twice that of MTB event yet all event have some subsidy from PPA though the ACT a road event.
  6. And we don't need to accept that outcome in the WP!
  7. I enjoyed the DC - I hope others did too! This was a PPA created event some years back organized by PPA sort of like the PA funride. My money would be if it were up to me - I hope PPA money is on this too is to organize Road events again (granted they have limited resources) esp in light of so many event been drop in Summer. PPA now need to stand up and take the reigns and offer the WP road cycling community more event in summer! If Southern Suburb or deep South can be use that is great (I stay in Kirstenhof / Tokai) if not I am sure like most we will travel north for these event. PPA should start re-investing money received from a road cycling Funride (ACT) back into road cycling - otherwise all will implode over time and even the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour will suffer! By Road cycling I mean all its form as mentioned above. To do nothing and just to let road cycling slide is not a solution at all - as ultimately it will lead to the death of PPA and their beloved income from the ACT for their cycling Trust fund which currently is not touchable by cycling!
  8. I will second this - I have not done the Dc for about 4 years due to how bad I felt after that's completely dehydrated and just not in a good way! This year even with the bad wind and rain - it actually was quite fun. I really thinking know that you had 30min to recover at 110km was a huge benefit to all the teams!

  10. Seems you had a harder ride than me then - the team I was in came 5th but I only got dropped at about 40km to go after doing a long (About 15min) hard turn with the tail wind between 65km/h and 75 km/h with the disc wheel on the back - once it was going it was great. Unfortunately for me lost concentration and momentum on one of the rollers and thus the rest of my team - still got 5h54:46 which I am quite please about. As I only got a ride 4 days before the event!
  11. Down to 5 road event before Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour. With 1 TBC! Lets see if PPA makes a plan and put some of their own Road (Funride and racing) events on this summer - they sure has saved enough to do it, if cycling is what they are about!
  12. Unfortunately I have no time to comment right now till Monday - with DC on this weekend! But I do have comments.

  14. If you don;t like this go vote on this poll: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/122825-ppa-how-much-funding-should-the-association-retain-annually-ie-not-spend-on-cycling/
  15. Looks like a max of 6 road funride in the western Cape next year before the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour - not so long ago and I do stand to be corrected their were at least amount in just the month of Fed!
  16. You have a least got the mail! I had heard about this a few weeks back - when I was on the PPA committee (up till this years AGM) I warned them about having funride in the Southern Sub of over 1500 riders. In fact for this reason and this reason alone I was in favor of the Cycle Lab event charging a higher fee. Naturally this fell on deft ear - I was the S@&t stir-er (racing snake) on the committee. Had PPA controlled the numbers of entries (be it by having a higher entry fee) for the ride in the Southern Sub along with reducing the number of route would have changed this out come I do not know, but it may well have. I always stated it was now a privilege for Funriders to have funride in the Southern sub! What really surprises me is that we lost Chapmans Peak and Constantia Nek a number of years back and PPA did not try and learn form this!
  17. This is possibly the most friendly Cycle nations view - The Netherlands - on that matter regards motorized versa non motorized transport! It might be good to mention another Dutch legal instrument: that is the legislation on liability. In Dutch law motorists are liable in case of accidents with non motorised road users regardless the question whether the non motorised road user might have been at fault. The reason for this is that motorised road users by their chosen mode of transport create a larger risk for fellow road users, and therefore have to behave more cautious. In fact they could only escape from liability in case they can prove force majeure. But this is not the mistake of a non motorised road user as mistakes can be expected. Thus motorists have to be prepared to be able to react to 'normal' mistakes of children, cyclists etc. The main advantage of this type of legislation is that you don't need to enforce a certain legally requested behaviour, but simply make the motorists pay if they are involved in an accident.
  18. It was a hard 1 tonight - Raymond Cox really impressive to be in the break (considering he is always working about 3 jobs out of cycling) chose the move well son! Normally you rely on me to time the moves - but this time you out classed the master. You been up their for a few weeks now your time will come. Matt Evan it is amasing what a few weeks without a drink does - well done Peter Wheeler
  19. Their is a move in this country like has been achieved in other cycling freindly countries that cyclist may go on a red light. Naturally they need to make sure it is safe to do so, think this is done already out of habit. Cape Town my be the 1st city n RSA to pass this as a By-Law in this regard!
  20. I think the agenda is their are always 2 side - Yup as a cyclist I would want to see him rot in hell - the question is is he not already? Yup punishment need to fit the crime! My brother killed a pedestrian ( guy just stepped directly in front of his car, millie seconds) back in about 1992 on the N2 in Pinelands in Cape Town which is a freeway and thus their should be no pedestrians. Then he was a student driving a very old car that could not even get to 120km/h speed limit on that road - could only do about 100km/h. My brother was 100% innocent and cannot remember the court details (don't even think my brother got a lawyer for this) - but my brother after studying left RSA and I am pretty sure part of this was due to the fact that he has taken a human life, my brother was completely innocently, but taking a human life will always be on his conscience. RSA does not control their laws like Switzerland does where he is now, if they did pedestrian would have been off this road. Ultimately laws are not been enforced and over time they been bent we probably all do this - be it just J walking! Thus thus Gov are equally to blame as this individual - but to enforce laws need to start somewhere, if this be the guy who get sentenced then let that be a loud lesson to other motorist!
  21. Please don't point that out this is a cycling site - I tried and my blew out my front tire due to over heating of the breaking surface!
  22. I The big picture - If the road were safe (unfortunately mainly due to motorist they are not) more people would be on bicycles and motor bikes which would be a great ease to the traffic! But they not and lets face it whenever you are in a car as just 1 person you (unless car its your work delivery person) are actually basically been selfish as you are using a mode of transport designed for 2 or more people! Everybody will say this argument suck as it is the truth - and motorist all are guilty of it, including myself! Now my question on the odd occasion when you do have a passenger in the car do you make them sit on the back seat or in the front seat - why more than likely for ease of conversation - right? Cyclist are no different except they have the wind noise - to try have a conversation with your cycling friend riding single file is very difficult! Why should you, as a cyclist you only taking the space on the road you need - likewise your friend - unlike the cars on the road with 1 person and burning up the environment! If punishment for that is you have to slow down and wait a few moment for other road users - so be it! I see people on the roads accepting they stationary because of traffic, road works, traffic light etc and just accepting this - why can motorist not accept that cyclist are also traffic - at least they moving granted slower than cars in free flow traffic! As to human life - how often do I see cars either stopping or been stopped for baboon even in Tokai, motorist avoiding pets, Guinea fowl, squirrels etc. But to have to offer a cyclist any room just by moving the steering wheel slightly, some motorist seem to feel this is to much work!
  23. Unfortunately as per reports on Monday with not having a death penalty in RSA any more the jails are way too full. So we cannot have all law breaker going to jail - so it is a case of setting the example with some. Almost sounds like insurance - many pay for few!
  24. I too am motorist - but if the only law a motorist is breaking is speed (I must confess I too have broken this rule) then you are breaking the law - why is riding 2 abreast any worse a rule to break rule to break? Pot calling Kettle black! Once again getting back to Chappies from the Noodhoek side toward Hout bay as per the road signage: 1. From 2.2 km to go to the top it is a 20km/h zone. 2. On the sign it says by way of a pic no overtaking. 3. Their is a sold white line all the way to the top and the road is almost all the way to the top quite narrow. 4. The road is by no means straight and the vision of the road ahead is limited. To overtake just 1 cyclist (riding as far left as safe) on this road without breaking any road rules is basically impossible - so why not allow cyclist to ride up to 1.5m of the centre line (So cyclist are safe {1.5m} from cars coming down on the other side) if this means enough space to ride 2 (3 or even 4)abreast why not? Riding 1 or 2 abreast on this road has zero impact on weather a car should be trying to overtake. Motorist just should not be even considering an overtaking maneuver on this stretch of road! This is the sign on Chappies - I am sure you can see how narrow the road is with the solid white line! http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/21179_10151300309190310_1644690418_n.jpg
  25. I agree it could happen to any off us (maybe not been drunk)! But how do you guide people to been more responsible? Sometime is it just that making examples out of people and handing down the maximum penalty so other really get a wake up call and act more responsibly i.e. having a huge deterrent! We all commit crime probable on a daily basis and sometime breaking the law has become so acceptable that it is now the norm - J walking would be an example on this. But when bye breaking the law we put others people live at major risk or take a human life then the penalty has to be very server and hopefully broad cast to the population - that if you do X the result will be Y and you don't want to be given a penalty of Y do you? So don't do X!
