  1. Down to 5 road event before Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour. With 1 TBC! Lets see if PPA makes a plan and put some of their own Road (Funride and racing) events on this summer - they sure has saved enough to do it, if cycling is what they are about!
  2. Unfortunately I have no time to comment right now till Monday - with DC on this weekend! But I do have comments.
  3. Unfortunately I have no time to comment right now till Monday - with DC on this weekend! But I do have comments.
  4. If you don;t like this go vote on this poll: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/122825-ppa-how-much-funding-should-the-association-retain-annually-ie-not-spend-on-cycling/
  5. Looks like a max of 6 road funride in the western Cape next year before the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour - not so long ago and I do stand to be corrected their were at least amount in just the month of Fed!
  6. You have a least got the mail! I had heard about this a few weeks back - when I was on the PPA committee (up till this years AGM) I warned them about having funride in the Southern Sub of over 1500 riders. In fact for this reason and this reason alone I was in favor of the Cycle Lab event charging a higher fee. Naturally this fell on deft ear - I was the S@&t stir-er (racing snake) on the committee. Had PPA controlled the numbers of entries (be it by having a higher entry fee) for the ride in the Southern Sub along with reducing the number of route would have changed this out come I do not know, but it may well have. I always stated it was now a privilege for Funriders to have funride in the Southern sub! What really surprises me is that we lost Chapmans Peak and Constantia Nek a number of years back and PPA did not try and learn form this!
  7. This is possibly the most friendly Cycle nations view - The Netherlands - on that matter regards motorized versa non motorized transport! It might be good to mention another Dutch legal instrument: that is the legislation on liability. In Dutch law motorists are liable in case of accidents with non motorised road users regardless the question whether the non motorised road user might have been at fault. The reason for this is that motorised road users by their chosen mode of transport create a larger risk for fellow road users, and therefore have to behave more cautious. In fact they could only escape from liability in case they can prove force majeure. But this is not the mistake of a non motorised road user as mistakes can be expected. Thus motorists have to be prepared to be able to react to 'normal' mistakes of children, cyclists etc. The main advantage of this type of legislation is that you don't need to enforce a certain legally requested behaviour, but simply make the motorists pay if they are involved in an accident.
  8. It was a hard 1 tonight - Raymond Cox really impressive to be in the break (considering he is always working about 3 jobs out of cycling) chose the move well son! Normally you rely on me to time the moves - but this time you out classed the master. You been up their for a few weeks now your time will come. Matt Evan it is amasing what a few weeks without a drink does - well done Peter Wheeler
  9. Their is a move in this country like has been achieved in other cycling freindly countries that cyclist may go on a red light. Naturally they need to make sure it is safe to do so, think this is done already out of habit. Cape Town my be the 1st city n RSA to pass this as a By-Law in this regard!
  10. I think the agenda is their are always 2 side - Yup as a cyclist I would want to see him rot in hell - the question is is he not already? Yup punishment need to fit the crime! My brother killed a pedestrian ( guy just stepped directly in front of his car, millie seconds) back in about 1992 on the N2 in Pinelands in Cape Town which is a freeway and thus their should be no pedestrians. Then he was a student driving a very old car that could not even get to 120km/h speed limit on that road - could only do about 100km/h. My brother was 100% innocent and cannot remember the court details (don't even think my brother got a lawyer for this) - but my brother after studying left RSA and I am pretty sure part of this was due to the fact that he has taken a human life, my brother was completely innocently, but taking a human life will always be on his conscience. RSA does not control their laws like Switzerland does where he is now, if they did pedestrian would have been off this road. Ultimately laws are not been enforced and over time they been bent we probably all do this - be it just J walking! Thus thus Gov are equally to blame as this individual - but to enforce laws need to start somewhere, if this be the guy who get sentenced then let that be a loud lesson to other motorist!
  11. Please don't point that out this is a cycling site - I tried and my blew out my front tire due to over heating of the breaking surface!
  12. I The big picture - If the road were safe (unfortunately mainly due to motorist they are not) more people would be on bicycles and motor bikes which would be a great ease to the traffic! But they not and lets face it whenever you are in a car as just 1 person you (unless car its your work delivery person) are actually basically been selfish as you are using a mode of transport designed for 2 or more people! Everybody will say this argument suck as it is the truth - and motorist all are guilty of it, including myself! Now my question on the odd occasion when you do have a passenger in the car do you make them sit on the back seat or in the front seat - why more than likely for ease of conversation - right? Cyclist are no different except they have the wind noise - to try have a conversation with your cycling friend riding single file is very difficult! Why should you, as a cyclist you only taking the space on the road you need - likewise your friend - unlike the cars on the road with 1 person and burning up the environment! If punishment for that is you have to slow down and wait a few moment for other road users - so be it! I see people on the roads accepting they stationary because of traffic, road works, traffic light etc and just accepting this - why can motorist not accept that cyclist are also traffic - at least they moving granted slower than cars in free flow traffic! As to human life - how often do I see cars either stopping or been stopped for baboon even in Tokai, motorist avoiding pets, Guinea fowl, squirrels etc. But to have to offer a cyclist any room just by moving the steering wheel slightly, some motorist seem to feel this is to much work!
  13. Unfortunately as per reports on Monday with not having a death penalty in RSA any more the jails are way too full. So we cannot have all law breaker going to jail - so it is a case of setting the example with some. Almost sounds like insurance - many pay for few!
  14. I too am motorist - but if the only law a motorist is breaking is speed (I must confess I too have broken this rule) then you are breaking the law - why is riding 2 abreast any worse a rule to break rule to break? Pot calling Kettle black! Once again getting back to Chappies from the Noodhoek side toward Hout bay as per the road signage: 1. From 2.2 km to go to the top it is a 20km/h zone. 2. On the sign it says by way of a pic no overtaking. 3. Their is a sold white line all the way to the top and the road is almost all the way to the top quite narrow. 4. The road is by no means straight and the vision of the road ahead is limited. To overtake just 1 cyclist (riding as far left as safe) on this road without breaking any road rules is basically impossible - so why not allow cyclist to ride up to 1.5m of the centre line (So cyclist are safe {1.5m} from cars coming down on the other side) if this means enough space to ride 2 (3 or even 4)abreast why not? Riding 1 or 2 abreast on this road has zero impact on weather a car should be trying to overtake. Motorist just should not be even considering an overtaking maneuver on this stretch of road! This is the sign on Chappies - I am sure you can see how narrow the road is with the solid white line! http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/21179_10151300309190310_1644690418_n.jpg
  15. I agree it could happen to any off us (maybe not been drunk)! But how do you guide people to been more responsible? Sometime is it just that making examples out of people and handing down the maximum penalty so other really get a wake up call and act more responsibly i.e. having a huge deterrent! We all commit crime probable on a daily basis and sometime breaking the law has become so acceptable that it is now the norm - J walking would be an example on this. But when bye breaking the law we put others people live at major risk or take a human life then the penalty has to be very server and hopefully broad cast to the population - that if you do X the result will be Y and you don't want to be given a penalty of Y do you? So don't do X!
  16. You make me feel young (only been a road rider for 30 years) - I don't remember this program - but does sound like a great idea!
  17. I would be quite happy to pay a license fee like most cyclist - just the thing is these fees are work out on the weight of the vehicle and thus cost way more to implement for bicycles as apposed to the revenue collect. As my profile pic say - we (cyclist) don't take our live into our own hands- we put them in your (motorist)! Cyclist do not need to be educated in any form to ride on roads in RSA in fact I don't think their is a specified minimum age as to when you may ride on a public road - so parents out their trust motorist to adhere to the road and not just drive over their kids - and actually thats what the law more or less states. Yup RSA is the only country in the world we have a law you are obliged to cycle single file - a law which is been challenged by many parties. I still don't know why and as this is about Chapmans Peak when I am riding with my friend(s) and going the speed limit why I should ride single files. Added to that any car over taking would be breaking the speed limit - crossing the centre solid line (even if I was single and they did not even give me 700cm let alone 1.5m). Not to mention not having a clear un interrupted view of the road ahead. Driver who are supposably educated to be able to drive - just continually break the laws they are meant to be educated in - but their is no enforcement of the laws! Please add to the list - What laws do: Pedestrians break? J walking often step into the road before looking left / right and left again Sometimes been on road they should not be on - Freeways Cyclist? Riding 2 abreast going through red traffic lights Sometimes speeding Sometimes been on road they should not be on - Freeways To the above who is likely to get physically injured if the cyclist or pedestrian / has causes an accident - the motorist - I think not! Motorist? Speeding Parking incorrectly Not over taking correctly according to road making or what they have pass a drivers license on (possibly about 8 different laws could be broken just on this item) going through red traffic light I am sure you guys can add quite a few more to the list - this si what google says about overtaking: overtaking check list Remember, to overtake safely you must: • Have a clear uninterrupted view of the road ahead. • Check rear-view mirrors and clear blind spots. • Signal your intentions before and after overtaking. • Not exceed the posted speed limit. When you must not overtake You must not overtake another vehicle when: • It is stopping or has stopped at a pedestrian or children’s crossing. • It has stopped at an intersection (unless the driver signals that they are turning left or right and it is safe to do so). • There is a ‘NO OVERTAKING’ or ‘NO PASSING’ sign. • You are nearing a blind bend or the crest of a hill or you do not have a good view of the road ahead. • The road is marked with a dividing line comprising two continuous lines; a continuous line on the left of a broken or dotted line; or a single continuous line.
  18. I have asked myself the question the past few week - why are the big tour busses even allowed on Chapmans Peak drive heading from Hout Bay to Noordhoek? On the decent I have never seen 1 going down without having parts of it over a solid white line. Why is something allowed on a road if it cannot manage the road safely / legally? You don't find busses (well I think once it happened) trying to go down the road in Muizenberg with the low railway bridge - do you? These busses are probably the season why their is a 20km/h speed limit on the pass in the other direction - actually good for cyclist! http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/21179_10151300309190310_1644690418_n.jpg
  19. Last week their was a post on cell ph been kept between your legs while driving - now kids already needing "performance enhancing drugs" maybe the population will stop exploding! What sport are we talking?
  20. Bump - due to apathy of cyclist who know how to complain but really are not that interested in getting anything done - possibly that is why of the approximately 20 000 members of PPA has, normally less than 100 go to the AGM. Cyclist don't expect anything to happing if all you can do is complain!
  21. Note my profile pic! While I have 18 till I die by Bryan Adams playing in the background!
  22. Please you really don't need to dope for our local WP races - but for longevity, some banned substances may help! The CSA president on Super Cycling last night said that we should also respect our own bodies - I do - and I want to live as long as possible in a condition which has a quality of life so why at 40 can I not use commercially available Items to help me live long (forever - Carte Blanch did something on the a few months ago - drug which could see us living to like 1000 years of age). My true racing days are over - but I can still give most elite cyclist a hard time! That is clean to date I have never doped, but for longevity reasons I am now considering my options! The only thing I really want to cheat is death - by living longer - don't we all?
  23. I sure I would have got point - but instead I got a puncture!
  24. I think motorist are just quite a lot of the time just not aware as to the rules of the road. Yesterday going up Chapman's Peak quite a few of us doing about 23 km/h at the slowest point but just before we past this sign below a motorist had hooted at us but not overtaken, at the time we were doing about 30km/h - I point at the sign and gave a hard look at the motorist behind us - guess what no problem the guy basically drove behind s the whole way - we rode single except for when passing slower cyclist. Education and awareness is very necessary and by point at signage / solid white line plays a part in making motorist aware. So when a motorist hoot at you and then proceed to try and over take on a solid white line instead of giving the finger - point the finger to the solid white line - maybe it will make the motorist think a little the next time! http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/21179_10151300309190310_1644690418_n.jpg
