  1. It could be "Oregon pine" or Douglas Fir - tight grained and quater sawn - I have some very similar that I salvaged from a very old building in Muizenberg. Colour is like a bright orange. There are many different types of Oregon pine. Will be interesting to see the other piece planed if turned 90 deg. The two pieces shown would be from two different types of trees but still Oregon pine. We get a pine grown in SA that has a very tight grain and no knots and when that is quater sawn you would almost swear it is cedar. They used quater sawn Oregan for making trusses.
  2. This is what you do if don't have a Skil saw - never mind the safety codes(what are those?) Some guys putting up a palisade fence across the road. BTW - thats the large size grinder not the little one.
  3. Sad day that was !!
  4. Romulus have you tried to figure out why your Magura MT2 are not to your liking - are they set up properly.
  5. You don't have to wonder. It is not worth it. Less of everything - even straw bales. I keep on doing it because I have done so many (consecutive)
  6. You are now entered for the Cape Town Cycle Tour taking place on 12 March 2017. Website: www.capetowncycletour.com Eisch!!! R510 per entry - grudge payment. Pay more get less. Gees is also getting less!! First entry was R25 (I know - a lot of it goes to development etc - but still)
  7. I got seriously sick from having planed and sanded Panga-panga and don't get a splinter in you - if you do remove immediately. Wenge splinters are also seriously bad. There is a web site that gives the properties of wood and also how toxic or piosonous wood can be (will find site over weekend and post)
  8. Roger Federer is more African than Team Dimension Data.
  9. There is no substitute for burmese teak.
  10. I would have lost the plot endless times. (No way you can make a profit there!)
  11. Just a BTW - I have a plane blade(standard) as it is in my toolbox and use it for all sorts of things - one of my most useful tools.
  12. Amazing - how did you remember? I will contant them and see if they would post me two. Otherwise ask who the agents are I'm sure they must be available here too then. I have not seen them here yet. That price looks reasonable too. This one came with the plane - CAN you get any shorter Thanx
  13. Thanx only 2" Stanley otherwise a Hock blade at R1200 (or not)
  14. So do you think I can find a supplier that stocks a plane iron (blade) for a Stanley #6 plane in Southern Africa. Stupendous price if and when available but not anytime soon. Normal blade is 2" wide and one for a #6 is 2 3/8" wide. And the exchange rate is not helping. Any info on hand tool suppliers in Britain like the CRC for hand tools?
  15. At R400 it's a good buy. Not much that can go wrong with routers just don't strain it and it should serve you well.
  16. My attempt at removing rust by electrolysis - so far so good! . . PLEASE if you are going to try this DO NOT use stainless steel as anodes - serious noxious gasses and poisonous residue. I changed to mild steel anodes - it works better too.
  17. The plywood and blockboard that is available locally is useless for making cabinets both have voids or gaps between the layers and the ply is not of a uniform thickness. Applying a finish is also costly and time consuming. The ply that is usable is very scarce and is ridiculously priced. I keep cabinets off the floor and seal all inside corners with clear silicon when near water sources. Having said that I have made amazing cupboards with ply but a lot of time and labour and extra cost of paint or sealer.
  18. I have milled sugar gum here in the Cape (yep I have a portable mill) and when dried properly it sinks like a brick in water and seriously hard - makes incredible flooring but it won't take any treatment too dense and natural oils/resins.
  19. And balsa wood is a hardwood.
  20. Hardware Centre
  21. Try Boltfast in Epping they have all sorts of strange thread types available. That bolt has an odd thread - will scratch around in my odd bolt bin too. Have you made your own rear handles at all - some of my standard handles are quite uncomfortable. I have a fairly wide hand. I am now looking for a Stanley #8 and 41/2 Also looking for a nice BLOCK PLANE urgently. When I'm 65 I'm going to build my own smoothing plane. .
  22. Look what I found on Gumtree - both for R400. Falcon 5 and a Stanley #6 - been wanting the Stanley for years. Picture as they were advertised but will post another pic when they have had some TLC. Both are like the Trance of planes.
  23. You have to persist when going to flats - at least 5 rides - once there you will not go back. I would not use flats on all terrains though.
  24. Rouxtjie! Just do it !! It can be done quite easily !
  25. The question is "are they the best?"
