Popeye, that proves what I was saying. People would rather do an easy race than actually be taken out of their comfort zones on the tougher races. Budget constraints? R70 entry fee, plus petrol for 200km, can't be that much? To do one of the best races in this country, seems like a fair trade to me.

I'm with you on that one ML, the roadies don't like the real Mtb races, they'd rather go and do a 120km training ride on the road. Or alternatively a 100km Road race on mtb's (Karoo 2 Coast) and such like. Ceres only takes an hour and 45 minutes to drive to and that's not driving that fast at all.

Your question seems to be, when should I stop riding? You should stop when its not fun anymore, simple, has nothing to do with age.

Can't really, you have to have a bike designed for that, I have considered it for lap racing but am gonna stick to my bike rather.

I think you guys have a gross mis-interpretation of a Giro squad? I was part of the Giro, I don't get my stuff for free, if I puncture, I'm putting on another tubby as well. I also rode this gravel route, it is in better condition that quite a few of the tar roads in the area, there really is nothing wrong with it.

Sequoia: Do it! The Asylum is a Titus, it's not like a Titus, it is one! The new Titus' come out with a stock ali 29'er! I have a titanium one and it is simply a beauty to ride.

Trust me tubes are a non-issue! Tyres, you have the options from IRC and Bontrager, Specialized are looking at bringing some in, Continental have 1 or 2 and the guys from Kenda are eventually going to cave in and start bringing in for me soon!

Ok, I ride a 29'er, it works, real well! I have no idea who started this vicious tube rumour, I use normal tubes and just stretch them a little, never had an issue (2 years of riding). The GF guys have a Big Sur (I think) as the lowest model, also next year Specialized have a 29'er, don't think it'll reach out shores though, you never know. If you want the best, get a Titus Ali 29'er! It is unreal!

Velouria, if he had been there we would have held him down and beaten 'til he couldn't move anymore! Tighest race finish I've ever seen in a long hard race like this before though, top 7 finished almost on top of each other.
