  1. Unfortunately not Gen. I live on a game reserve, far far away from any big towns. You get bitten here and it's a 3-4 hour drive to the nearest hospital with antivenom. I relocate snakes as much as I can, but I'm not trained to handle venomous snakes so not going to take a chance. Also have 3 young kids in the house, so unfortunately the snake had to go. Some snakes (like mambas) are also territorial, so chance are good they'll just come back if you don't relocate it far enough
  2. Quick update on our roof tenant. After the last klopjag we did, it disappeared for a while and I thought we had chased it away for good. Then on Monday morning, at 3am, my wife and I got woken up by the same sounds coming from directly above our bed. So I knew the snake was back, and it kept me awake until I had to get up and go to work. After work I got my shotgun, flashlight and snakestick ready and climbed into the roof again. I just thought bugger the ceiling boards, if I see this snake I'm going to blast it! As I headed towards the bedroom I saw some fresh snake poop.Told the wife to take a broomstick and knock on the ceiling boards where we heard it last time. She could immediately hear it but I couldn't, and neither could I see it because it was underneath the insulation. Eventually it's head popped out, and that's when I nearly shat myself. It wasn't a mfezi as I first thought, but a flippen black mamba! It shot out from underneath the insulation (luckily not in my direction) so I took 2 shots at it and got it. I was still *** bang to go near it, if it's still alive and comes for me there's no room in there to quickly move out the way. 2.5m (we measured it) BLACK MAMBA
  3. Thanks Henry. They're not cheap hey...
  4. Hectic. So he got away that day?
  5. How/when was this photo taken? At the time of jacking with a go pro? He doesn't seem to be holding a weapon?
  6. Nice looking glasses! Price, or link to said deal please?
  7. LOL, easy there. We were just dreaming of how lekker it would be to mtb down the escarpment. We didn't say we were going to go against park rules and do it! I am well aware of the sensitivity of the area, and that it probably won't ever be opened to mtb'ers. I am however of the opinion that mtb trails can be opened in some sections of the park without causing any ecological damage. It just needs funding and manpower to maintain the trails. There isn't much tourism happening (hikers are a dying breed) at the moment and the camps are running at a loss. Opening a few mtb trails could attract more people to the park. Unfortunately conservation in Africa = if it pays it stays. And yes, I am aware of the importance of the berg in terms of ecosystem services, but some of our fellow south africans are not very clued up on that concept. I have cycled up Mike's pass a few times myself, it's a lekker ride! Yes Greg made a mistake when he rolled the chopper on top the escarpment. He's lucky they all survived. But between him and Brett they are 2 of probably very few chopper pilots who regularly fly at that altitude, and I've always felt safe flying with them.
  8. Path maintenance is probably the biggest obstacle. The park management just do not have the budget or staff to maintain the existing paths, nevermind new mtb paths. But yes, it would be awesome to ride some of those trails.. You could do a north to south trail like they do a hiking traverse. Or just bomb down (mostly down) from the top of the escarpment to one of the camps.
  9. it's on the little berg. I have flown lots with Greg and Brett, they are the best (and probably only) high altitude chopper pilots in the country. They have a set route that they are allowed to enter the Park/world heritage site, and cycling isn't allowed in the park, yet. Would be awesome if that changes, the place is so under utilized. People just don't hike that much anymore
  10. It looks like you use beer as motivation! Keep pedaling dammit, I'll reach that beer some day!
  11. Raai wie gaan nagmerries he vanaand....
  13. Wahahaha brilliant! My mom would do this to my place, she only visits us in winter when (she thinks) the snakes are asleep. We have 2 dogs, a weiemeraner and worsie. The worsie has more guts than brains and tackled a mfezi not too long ago. How she didn't get bit I honestly don't know. Both of them got spat in they eyes several times now but they just won't learn
  14. Yup. We had these big boulders in our garden, perfect place for snakes to hide under. My dogs are flippen good at smelling them out and they have this specific bark which immediately tells me there's a snake. Boulders have since been removed, which has helped, but they still come through my garden fairly often. Like I said, about 15 mfezi's so far, 1 tiger snake, 1 brown house snake, 1 egg eater. No mambas so far, luckily. Although there is a big one at our offices that someone else has seen twice now. Brandon, ek slaap soos n babatjie saans. Ek word elke 2 ure wakker en huil...
  15. yeah I've tried getting rid of our housemate. Unfortunately it's pretty clever, and it disappeared somewhere between the roof tiles and plastic sheeting. I climbed into the roof (with a shotgun) and had another guy wait outside where I thought it goes in and out. But it outfoxed us somehow. We've seen probably 15 of them in our garden in the last year. I really don't like killing snakes but with 3 small kids in the house the risk is just too high. The nearest hospital with antivenom is about 3-4 hours drive away. Not the one in my roof but another one I could get some decent pics of:
  16. Sadly I won't be doing the Karkloof again this year. Thought I'd rather do a new race so entered the Swazi Imvelo classic, which is on the same weekend.
  17. We have a massive mozambique spitting cobra (Mfezi) living in our house roof. I've seen him 3 times now. The first time I walked outside right underneath him and only realized there's something there when I felt something wet on the back of my neck. Looked up and there he was. He sleeps in the roof under the "think pink" woolly stuff, above our bedroom. When it was a little warmer still we could hear him moving around at night. I'm hoping it's a HE and not a SHE looking for a nice place to lay eggs. I don't want 10's of baby mfezi's in my house!
  18. 48km and 800m of climbing between Louwsburg and Vryheid
  19. You live in SA, and that stuff is still there each morning?
  20. Looks impressive! You talk of a permanent set up, do you leave all that equipment outside?
  21. I have my old GT 3.0 that I bought in 2006 on my indoor trainer. I just drag the whole business to where I want to train, be it outside to watch the kids play or inside in front of tv. Maybe I should try the fan in front of me like you guys, so that it feels like I'm going somewhere
  22. Ok so company X is investing millions in SA Cycling and sponsors an event, lets say Sani2c. Sani2c allows convicted dopers to race. Now 80% of the Sani2c riders are hubbers and have decided to not support the event, so the entire event is a failure. Company X reviews the benefit of their cycling sponsorship and decides its just not worth it with no one showing up for their events. All theoretically of course. I would rather not support or do business with a company that supports and directly sponsors a convicted doper. Better than boycotting business X
  23. Yeah, oops
  24. I obviously didn't read the article about the masters marathon champs before I posted this.. #faceplam
  25. I'm actually with Longbarn on this one. If someone has been caught doping and served their sentence, so be it. Move on. So a bunch of mtb events have banned previously convicted dopers, but are road events doing the same? Why is not much being said about Nolan Hoffman still winning so many road races? I don't see Brandon Stewart or any of those guys back winning mtb events.. What they should do is have different rules for previously convicted dopers. Test them more regularly, perhaps before every event?
