  1. I obviously didn't get the memo.
  2. Old newspaper to put into your MTB shoes overnight, should they get wet.
  3. Try not to drag your back wheel on single-tracks, especially on downhill switch-backs. On bi-directional single-tracks or specific lines on technical jeep tracks, uphill usually has right of way. There are exceptions, like the corridor between Contermans and Meerendal. (Note: expect some debate on this ... )
  4. Maybe it has the same effect as wearing a mask ...
  5. Not sure this has been covered before? https://www.airofit.com/ A Power Balance myth, or for real? 2020 has been a strange year. "Airofit generates resistance on your respiratory muscles - primarily the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles. This causes fatigue, which is then overcompensated by muscle tissue growth, making your breathing muscles faster, stronger and more efficient - just like any other muscle group. Of all the body’s muscle groups, the ones with the power to make a fast difference for performance are the respiratory muscles - simply because we usually don't train them. Together with breathing experts like Mike Maric, we have developed a range of breathing exercises that focus on different areas of your breathing to ensure you are able to unlock your full physical potential."
  6. I also think it's very expensive, and honestly don't use it often enough at all. Admittedly I only got my smart trainer during level 3 lockdown. Having said that, should we go back to a stage 5 or 4 lockdown, I'd likely consider it money well spent. Also, still haven't had the benefit with the Cape Doctor gusting in the summer months.
  7. Shimano drivetrain and cassette on bike and Direto.
  8. May I emphasize, the original advert was on Facebook. Criminals will exploit the exact sentiment you correctly point out. If we're not vigilant, and have the right to call it as a suspicious, we default to the lowest common denominator, which is the sale of stolen goods on online forums. How else are stolen goods sold?
  9. The advert was on Facebook, where it's open season. Stolen goods have a much higher chance of finding a willing/unsuspecting buyer on uninformed platforms like Facebook and Gumtree. With crime rife around us, willing and unsuspecting buyers become part of the problem. Instead of asking what suggests it's stolen, tell us why you think it isn't stolen. That way I'm of the opinion you can better claim the moral high ground.
  10. I would have thought so too. Same bike, same cassette.
  11. I find that some of my gears are "twitchy" and "grind". Is that merely a spacing set-up on the rear axle? My LBS put my Shimano 105 onto the Direto X.
  12. So. The compulsory wearing of a mask in a public place shall not apply to a person who undertakes vigorous exercise provided a 3 meter distance is kept between any other person, subject to the Minister of Health declaring what defines vigorous. Wow! *Edit: Probably requires its own thread!
  13. Zwift has become expensive!
  14. Tygerberg MTB Hillcrest
  15. Lockdown day #50 (Sat 16 May) Melkbosstrand beach & cycle lane.
  16. Thanks E. Good wishes to you and the family too.
  17. Melkbostrand COVID-19 lockdown day 42
  18. Melkbosstrand and the cycle lane to Blaauwberg were packed. I'd say people mostly kept their distance, and at least 80% had something to cover their mouth and nose. At 08h50 as we rolled into Melkbos, there were still several cyclists and runners out, and we had a full convoy of army, metro and SAPS come into the village. Not sure what came of that, as we were home just before 09h00. It was great to get out, but couldn't help thinking that it was just far too congested and cannot be sustainable. Something's gotta give - either a lengthened time slot (even one hour would help) or a recall of the permission. I have to say, it was a very emotional sight to see all the families and people outdoors! It brought a big smile to my face but also a small tear to my eye.
  19. Thanks, I'll rather have a beer instead after a quick (and hopefully last) workout on the rollers. Maybe even get a cold cooked chicken from Woolies for supper. And yes, I am over thinking it. In fact, I'm actually paranoid about it because of my pre-existing conditions. I always have and will continue to cover up when I leave my house. But don't be surprised if others don't when walking, running or cycling, and are not fined or arrested. The answer's still not as clear to me as it obviously is to most others, and I'll gladly come back here and eat humble pie if the answer is proven to be crystal clear in due course. We must be able to engage in honest dialogue, and not merely rubbish an opinion because it doesn't align with your own. How many debates haven't we all had "because it's the law", when in fact there's little or no understanding of the law, or opinions are based on hearsay? Otherwise we risk becoming sheeple in what is increasingly looking like a military state. Now I really am out of here!
  20. Let's compare notes next week based on what transpires over the next few days, both out on the roads and in the media. BTW, I'm not a lawyer, but have been in many a negotiation before. Heck, even drafted proposed legislation once which was enacted!
  21. It's the word "place". A road, pavement or path is not a place. It is a way of course between two places. A place is where people congregate. What is the intention of the legislation? As I asked earlier, does a person walking by themself to the taxi rank, whilst practicing social distancing, now have to cover their nose and mouth whilst walking? Obviously the taxi rank is a place and where people congregate, so there's no doubt there. The litmus test will be if people are arrested/reprimanded for walking from their house to a public place without covering their nose and mouth. Please folks, I fully get the common sense arguments. As a 54 year old Type 1 diabetic I am extremely cautious and even fearful of the risk we're all exposed to. My problem is that yet again we could have unclear and poor drafting of key legislation, and people will interpret it to mean what they'd like it to mean. And more people are likely to be found guilty in the court of social media than in a court of law. Or by a power drunk law enforcement official. There will be many runners and cyclist out there from Friday 01 May without covering their noses and mouths. Others will scold them on social media or out on the road. Point is, they might not be in the wrong. Enough said. Gotta go pump my tyres and lube my chain for tomorrow's epic ride. Be safe.
  22. Please direct me to the regulation. I might have missed it. Or if we're reading the same one, viz. 5 (1) - (2), it's certainly unclear. Either way, it will be interesting to see how many people don't have face masks (or similar) whilst out exercising.
  23. I for one would appreciate the correct answer, not somebody's interpretation of what's common sense. Up until yesterday, on the two occasions I ventured to the local supermarket during lock down, I was in the minority with a face mask on. And I had my own sanitizer with me. That was my common sense. On the day before lock down back in March, there were thousands of shoppers not practicing social distancing with hardly any face masks to speak of. Huge gatherings in pubs before they closed at 6pm. Common sense told me to stay at home. From Friday 1st May, everybody will all be wearing face masks, not because of common sense, but because it is now law in a public place. I will have a face cover with me on the bike. I will keep a safe distance behind the cyclist in front of me. I won't snort my nose unless I really have to, and even then I'll increase my situational awareness for the benefit of others. I will have my sanitzer bottle in addition to my water bottle - one never knows why you might need it. My question remains: What do the regulations require? The answer will help all of us to tolerate varying degrees of common sense now that we're allowed to exercise.
  24. EDIT: Quote from GreaseMonkey "You can get technical, but at the end of the day the cop that stops you is not going to care much for your argument. Take a mask or buff with you. For me it will be a buff around my neck - if I see anyone that may stop me I will just pull it up over my mouth and nose. As for actually exercising with a mask, yeah.... don't see how that's possible as soon as the HR goes up and the breathing gets on the heavier side." MY RESPONSE Agreed. It can get technical and you're up against the full might of 72,000 law enforcement officers who will dictate as they feel at any given point in time. Frankly, common sense and science should dictate. Do the regulations require it? Unclear in my opinion. Will I take precaution? Definitely! I like the buff idea. And maybe think twice about clearing your nostrils, for the benefit of others. What does the science say? Here's a re-post from earlier. https://medium.com/@...er-a5df19c77d08
  25. Obviously. But don't confuse public place (mentioned in the regs with reference to a building, place or premises) with public space. Is my route walking to the taxi rank a public place?. The taxi rank certainly is. Is my route walking to buy food a public place? The retail store certainly is.
