  1. From Wilderness, up whites road, smooth gravel perfect on my 26c - at the top turn left on seven passes road to George, newly tarred - at the end of road turn around a go back - 45km very safe, little traffic, plenty hills - add outeniqua pass big shoulder not too stressful + 40km

From wilderness go to N2 and after head towards sedge - after 3 km take hoekwil turnoff and climb serpentine on brand new tar with small shoulder - ride till tar runs out 22.5km turn back 45km

First paragraph super safe till George then pretty safe

    Second option safe

Thanks for the helpful info. Will check out your suggested routes

  2. I am going to be spending a couple of days in the Wilderness area this weekend.

Can anybody recommend some decent (and hopefully safe!) road routes?

I was thinking of riding Outeniqua pass as part of a route. Wonder if anybody has ridden that and if it is safe to ride with respect to cars and trucks etc?

  3. Very keen to ride Hans se Kop above Sir Lowry's pass.

Can anyone link a 3D Veloviewer segment for it? I tried to, but I seem to only be able to do it for segments I've ridden myself.

Wonder if it's still possible to ride it since someone mentioned they haven't been any attempts in 2018 according to Strava.

  4. Ha ha. We didn't use all our energy to bridge the gap. There was plenty more energy when we made the catch. We rode into the back of 1D at about Edinburgh Drive, and then managed to work our way to the front by the Blue Route. Then we pretty much played Pacman on the front with anyone who wanted to help out up front. But ask any 1D riders, we sure as hell weren't wheelsucking... In fact, I'd say we helped more than a few riders achieve a dream time.

There were about 6-8 riders in 1D who were damn strong and happy to push with us and keep the tempo, but Paris and I were on a mission and did most of the pacemaking. I think we dropped the bunch up Smits, Chappies and Suikers. We were caught again every time. We weren't trying to breakaway, just have a good day out. I think we caught the 1A bunch by the end.

The plan was just to be in front down Hospital Bend and also past Paradise Motors, where I've been caught out in the pro bunches a few times. Never crashed, mind you, but have witnessed carnage there. So we didn't want any of that. The real race is this weekend  :whistling:

Obviously, we abandoned the plan completely by the time we hit the Blue Route and the red mist descended. Stoked to see a few very capable riders alongside us and we kinda decided to keep on ripping to see what happened.

What a day, though. Easily one of the most fun days on a road bike. Still not quite mountain biking but you can't beat the Fun Ride World Champs to keep the skinny wheel stoke high.

That said, even one fatality at a race that is all about fun is too many. Three is just ghastly. RIP.

Phenomenal ride two hands. Hats off to you and your partner. I was in 1B and you guys caught my particular grouping in the Sunnydale area. When I glanced over to the right, I noticed a handful of 1D's coming through. I didn't realize at the time that the real heroes were the two 1E guys who instigated the carnage!

On a side note, we met a few years ago before the Mont Ventoux stage of the Tour de France (2013). I was with our mutual friend, Roy. We went for a ride and a beer then watched the stage up on the mountain the following day.  I recall you had ridden up the Mont Ventoux three times the same day a couple of days before!

  5. Don't want to be THIS guy, but apparently MORE chat of unrest and protest action in Masi.. A staff member who works for us lives there and that's the word in the township apparently...

If that does happen I fear that the status of the race will be forever diminished. No longer something to train hard toward and make the season's main goal. Just a once great event that you enter for old time's sake, with the realization that it has become very vulnerable to disruption.

  6. It seems bizarre that the organisers could get it so wrong. Sending out messages to say "Avoid the expo" ....

Not a good look for the CTCT...

I am sure it will be sorted out in time and all the numbers printed by hook or by crook. But many people, especially those coming from afar (N. Suburbs, Stellenbosch, etc.) will be mightily inconvenienced by this. This is not a minor glitch.

  7. I managed to get my number after 30 minutes wait in at that point a very short queue - but I was one of the first ones in at 9:30.

The printers were printing multiples of the same number...printing numbers completely skew...then taking ages to print for other entrants.

I felt really sorry for the helpful young ladies, in the firing line, trying to operate the malfunctioning printers.

I just hope they can sort this out in the remaining two days.

Seems a risky idea to try on the spot printing for so many thousands of numbers. The old system worked perfectly.
