  1. Bike parks are busy in general nowadays... I skipped modderfontein because I've heard of the long lines... Instead took the long drive from Midrand to Cowhouse, there it was busier than usual... Got back in car and went to Rosemary Hill.... There too, busy. Lol... Just ended up riding there otherwise I would have driven the whole of gauteng. People must be careful not to congregate in parking lots, draws unnecessary attention.
  2. No to fat bikes...I think a fat bike is a luxury, not needed in anyone's fleet and definitely not as your only bike. Perhaps a Plus Bike?

I inquired about the route, in terms of access...turns out its available to access all year round. I was under the impression that some portions might run through PVT property and that MUNGA organizers made arrangements with land owners when developing the route...Not the case. One can ride the route any time as its basically all public roads.

    Fuji Bikes

Fuji is solid all round...Road/MTB/CX you name it. I think they should bring more of their bikes here to SA. I like em.

Its on their Facebook page...Event page. Respond on their for numbers and then you just rock up. Think you will only need to fill out an indemnity form and that's it. No fees or anything. Downloaded the route, i think it is about 104km with about 850-900m elevation.
  6. Groenkloof is a write off...I don't even think of it anymore...PTA has enough good alternatives which are safe.
  7. Looks like a Honda CBR 600RR
  8. Hi All Might be in Potch for work reasons soon and when I travel beyond provincial borders for work I've always like to squeeze a ride in if possible. Is there any trails or routes worth riding in Potch?
  9. 2 Quick questions on these bikes, been quite keen on getting one. 1) Is the left shifter a 2x just obviously without a shift cable installed? 2) Are the wheels tubeless ready?
  10. This is why i still like walking into a brick and mortar shop...the online stores i use for reference and get pricing. I know there are good online stores out there but I still like to go feel what I'm buying...But online is the way forward, lets hope online experiences start improving so that we only leave our homes to go cycle.
  11. Does the route seem safe to do solo? But i suppose nowhere is really safe nowadays...What gearing you running? I want to do gravel riding but i feel my mtb is not geared for that so it wont be so great...would spin out quick with my 32t up front.
  12. Try Hazeldean / Cowhouse, quite flat. Red barn too. Was at Hennops today for the first time, awesome place but don't think I'd take my niece there, climbs are quite hectic...Haven't been to Wolvespruit. Buffelsdrift is nice too and got a few short route options. That would be worth a shot too.
  13. Hennops MTB Trail debut appearance here - Climbs were quite tough but views and downhill dashes were fun. That downhill portion after "Snake" (or maybe it is part of "Snake") requires some focus or else you will find yourself rolling down the rocky hill and i don't think anyone will be able to get up alone once at the bottom...if you got no medical aid, Kalafong Hospital is your name or you rolling straight to Jesus location.
  14. Preach on brother - There's troubled souls out there like me who need to fulfill this need.
  15. All the bikes you mention are good, the Merida is just a bit more of a xc racer and to enjoy it i guess you need to ride it like a racer would. It doesn't sound like it suits your riding style. I also lean towards the Momsen...seems more versatile for your xc/marathon riding to more rough trail riding. A more "fun" bike overall.
  16. That's a cool bike. I also almost went for one. I like plus bikes in general.
  17. At the moment i can only really afford one bike, but now I'm questioning myself on my current HT MTB...for the way i ride and what i like to ride it seems like i need a Gravel bike
  18. What frame is it? is it rim brake? If rim brake, wouldn't there be clearance issues by the calipers?
  19. Biogen bottle from Dischem for 30 bucks works like a boss, go 2....spout opens, you take a sip and put it back in your cage. What more do you need? Cycling is expensive, wherever we can save, we must do so. There's other accessories and components where we cant really afford to skimp.
  20. I hear you on that, but it will become too expensive. I'll have to hope a 38 can fit i think. Don't want to spend too much...might as well then put that money towards an actual gravel bike. Ultimately i need better than my current 32t for gravel riding. 38-11 is better than 32-11 so i suppose that can work until i get a gravel bike.
  21. Yes, I have been thinking of that too. Should maybe check with my LBS, see what sizes they got and see what is the maximum size it could possibly take instead of ordering anything online.
  22. Hi All I've got an itch for gravel riding lately. Ended up in Buffelsdrift this weekend for the first time, there there was some long gravel roads before getting back to singletrack. But, i honestly enjoyed the long gravel stretches. I think the previous roadie in me came out. lol. I just wish i had more than my 32t chainring to really get moving on those sections. I'm definitely going to get a gravel bike at some point, just not right now with all the chaos in the world. Right now I'm grateful to just have 1 bike and be able to enjoy the scenery So i want to mix up my riding by doing some gravel rides on my hardtail MTB. I wanted to know: 1) what is the biggest SRAM DM chainring available? Only seen 36T here in SA, but looks like there is 42T options 2) What size tires would be best? 42C? I'd try and source a 2nd wheelset here on the hub or wherever. Was initially thinking of getting the SRAM 42-28 10 speed chainrings but then thought that would be a nuisance. Fitting shifter and FD...its too much work. I think i can live with swapping the wheelset and the chainring according to my riding needs. Thanks "Gravel bikes - what do you have and where did you buy it?" this thread really created an itch
  23. That accessory list...Wow. lol. I can understand for the helmet and shorts, i think those 2 are real important. I got my R500 Darcs from Sportsmans for like 4 years now with the different lenses, still happy with it...That would leave 2k to buy the next higher spec bike...the 2k could be the difference between getting a coil shock vs the next level, an air shock...Thats more important than the Oakley...As a newbie you go over the bars, face first and shove your 2.5k Oakley into your face when you could have had hydraulic brakes instead. lol #Eish
  24. Nice bike - I've been looking around in Cash Converters wherever i find myself in Gauteng. Usually you find oldies in in the pawn shop that just need a bit of TLC...I want to make a gravel bike out of an old school mtb.
