    Formula 1...

Was about to crack a Land Rover oil joke... and the I remembered (maybe incorrectly) that I think this is the team was Toyota in a previous life.
  2. The beep is the first thing I turn off when I get a watch. Set mine on vibrate and that's it. I hate those beeps. But I tend to keep it at 1k and if I really care I look and see. More often than not the distance rather than the split time! Day after Red Hill I went up the mountain with a friend and we said - we better not tell the roadies we just did our first 3 k's in 45 min's!
  3. I'm also in the high max HR gang... it is what it is. Just work on the correct formula from your max HR and don't worry about what the BPM is relative to other people. (They'll just freak out and rush you to hospital! )
  4. Candz, from what I've read the wrist based units are for some reason notoriously bad when cycling. So I ride with a strap, which causes no chafing (for me, anyway) But love running without it and the resulting HR values are good enough for me. It's not as if I'm going to be able to tell the difference between 153 and 156 BPM.
  5. I don't run all that many road races... so I'm on the same boat as Dave there. Also, that entire sachet in one go will be a very bad idea, that a load of powder which won't work if your already hot and dry-mouthed. Not to mention that then you'll get all the energy supplied in one shot as opposed to sipping every now and then.
  6. I am the versuipslag swimmer here. Just started. Again. Did a set with fins on a friend of mine's (who is also a swimming coach) recommendation in the week and can agree that it really works your ankle. And felt like the entire drill also helped me kick more from the hips.
  7. Ja can agree with Dave on this. And the plain with water is just fine, for an unexpected change - water has just a faint hint of taste to it. First time ever somebody nailed a "plain" flavor. You can eat whilst using it - I tried it on a long run a while ago and no issues - and it was a bloody hot two days. But while I did carry some gels just incase, I never felt like using it. Like Dave said, cruise control. But all of that said - I see we've reached the "evil" page on this thread!
  8. The other thing that gets affected by this, is of course blood flow to the gut. So all the things you may try and be able to digest running in cooler temps backfires on you spectacularly. You must run in the heat at times. Or in whatever adverse conditions you may face. It's not just a HTFU thing, it teaches you to expect: what chafes in the rain, how does sloshy socks feel like, what does work for nutrition in the heat, whether you need to go slower, etc.
  9. Are you guys aware of anything around Arfican-X? I was planning on doing it last year, was not impressed with the route and location change idea but is contemplating it for this year. Finding no info about it on Stillwater website - didn't they use to host this? Or have I missed something?
  10. With subs having opened... I have a friend (very good runner!) that missed out on Oceans entry and asked me if I can help looking for one. Anybody know of an entry that is up for grabs?
  11. All I can say is - it's my size. Not my wallet's size, though!
  12. Breast stroke?! That's for pro's! Doggy paddle more likely!
  13. Already entered - for the 500 only. Somebody needs to keep the life guards on their toes!
  14. Two thing: 1. Tailwind. I do not use it as extensively as Dave, I presume. But I just chuck some in my water bottle and run. Had a variety bag a while ago and just tried the "non flavored" version the other day - and first time ever somebody got that right! Caffeinated or not depends on yourself - I use both. 2. After last week's talking about the Nikes, I walked into their Canal Walk store over the weekend to see the Zoom Fly SP on bigger special than on their online store - 1800-odd. So for that price I had to try it. If anybody else is interested... Weeeeird semi-transparent upper.
  15. I'm doing the light - purely because of swimming distance. Just started swimming and... it's not as if you can have a rest. So at this stage it's still a maybe, but hoping to be fine by that time.
  16. Barry, it was a few iterations back, but the guys was shocked to hear I got 850 out of them. He said mostly 400-450, most he's heard of was almost 600. But they were pretty much stuffed at the end, wrung the last bit of k's out of them on short runs. I liked them, but they had a bit of a bump (for support) under the arch, which irritated me when I was thinking about it. Really nice and light shoes. I prefer the Freedom ISO, though. Cannot compare to the Bostons, as I have not used them. The Rides are my current "long run" and recovery run shoes. Kinvara is a totally different beast to them. Much more flat/open shoe, but both have ore than enough toe space - maybe more so in the Kinvara than Ride. Weird thing about the Ride is it feels like I'm running on a ledge on the outside of the foot/shoe that is a really weird feeling. So current state of my shoe inventory is that I use Rides as described, NB FF Zante (v4) for day-to-day, Freedom shorter (longest was a 30) races and odd training run. I'm rambling on and don't know whether it's helping you at all...
  17. 3500 k's on a pair of (racing!) shoes?! And I impressed the Saucony salesman when he heard about my mileage on Kinvaras... Mostly run striking front outside first. Basically below the "ball" of my outside two toes.
  18. Stupid question from a non-Nike runner, who is obviously intrigued by the Vaporfly. Are these the cheaper version thereof basically - and what is compromised? And... longevity? I see wildly varying reports. Also, are these meant for heel strikers more than forefoot to midfoot? (Based on biggish drop and the cushioning.) Yes, I'm very curious...
  19. What do you currently run in - and why switch? But to answer the question regarding the Peregrines - I have an old pair of Peregrine 5's which is still working fine and no tears after plenty of abuse. But the 5's did actually have some issues - a buddy of mine also had his tear. But many others did not. I also have a newer pair of 8's now and thusfar they're working just fine for me. Another friend has just gotten some NB which he gave some positive feedback on. And a couple of the guys and girls actually switched to... I think it's North Face? for trail shoes.
  20. Doesn't Steer's 3rd theory of training state that thinking about starting to run counts as an interval session?
  21. I would guess not. The outer sole would in my mind remain same thickness. It's the midsole that rises a bit more to lift the heel more.
  22. Different animals altogether... Kinvara and Freedom just wants to go fast - these are easier shoes. So, in short. higher drop, 8mm to the 4. More cushioning and all round a softer shoe. Which is why I like them for longer stuff. I have used Freedoms for a 30k race, and it's fine for that. My feet just felt comparatively tired. What I also like about the Ride/Triumph is because of the softer nature, I can actually alternate my strike (yes, I'm one of those weirdos) when I start getting tired. Haven't even tried it on the Freedoms yet and never took Kinvaras past a half.
  23. Sorry, no idea - I conversely don't know Nike and Adidas sizing to be able to compare! But they compare for me to NB, which is the other brand I wear a lot.
  24. I've used the Triumph ISO 2 till they fell apart... So happy with them - as I am with most Saucony's. For me they are the max drop I go to and only use it for long and recovery runs. Currently using the Ride 4, which is pretty darn close to the same thing. Which sales have them?
  25. What irritates me most is that a truckload of people that have entered today, did so fairly sure that they're not going to pitch up on race, but they miiight... or hey, we can just sub later. That escape route is too easy and stuffs it up for the rest of us. Which means that a good friend of mine, who runs a sub-5 Oceans and 8h Comrades, but is an ICU doc and as such cannot hang around a PC during the day could very well be left without an entry and hoping for one of these subs.
