  1. SeaBee

    Formula 1...

He will remain a true legend for most. One of the very best there ever was, coupled with his insane strong will to be able to compete again after his accident.
  2. This no pickup on the morning threw me a bit. It's not as if the two collection points are on my back door - and I'm pretty sure there are people even further from those.
  3. I started at 45 or 46. Agree - it would have been nice to have started earlier. But then again - I may have broken myself somewhere along the line! Things happen the way they do for a reason. Last year I started to feel like I actually need to get on the bike a bit more. This year I've actually started doing it just to get some alternate training in. And must admit, the smile is back when riding again also.
  4. When they started it I mentioned it to them in one of the first threads that it is silly to be so restrictive about the forum and only catering for trail running.
  5. Ja, running is an interesting sport! I am amazed at some of the people passing me (quite regularly!) - and I'll continue to add age into that bracket then as well.
  6. Worst was seeing this merchandise available at the NB (when they were still doing it) factory shop in Kenilworth. Even more jaw-dropping was the shape and size of the people actually buying it. Like a guy I work with that walked around with an Epic t-shirt the other day. I just shook my head.
  7. Ja, Cape Town 12 is the same. I've entered but now have a trail clinic which was postponed to the same date. No contest as to which option I'm choosing! Can't imagine it being an issue over those short distances - and esp since these are more "vibey" (not so serious) races. I'd go without water (one sip along the way would have been nice but tagging along a bottle for an hour for that nicety is just overkill) and somebody even more casual than me would not mind taking water along for their session.
  8. Hey, we came in at about the same time! Roads must have crossed somewhere... Had a lekker relaxed run, just minding my own business, then ran into a club mate on his first - and he was just falling off the 1:45 bus, so took him through to the finish. That was about... almost halfway through the Perdeskoen. So if you saw two Paarl guys from thereabouts on, that was us! I may have pulled him a bit hard towards the end - so I suspect I may receive one Christmas card less!
  9. Sorry Ronniek, I prefer this one to the Winelands. Only plus on Winelands is the scenery if you're not used to vineyards. Candz, it's a lekker and as flat as can be run. Some of the most elevation is crossing bridges! As other have said, very nice vibe, route has improved a lot with the changes of late. And coming all the way from Paarl, I don't mind the 7 start as much as others! As with Oceans, don't get sucked into the downhill section early on, going down to Newlands. But either way, coming back into town is always the hard part. At least now it's not going up from Newlands any more. Just enter and klap the training. You'll enjoy it!
  10. And then to contradict it, a friend of mine had a tear in her PF, could not run for months at all, but did a lot of stationary riding at that stage. I can imagine that doing MTB will put some strain on this.
  11. Never run with anything sore below the knees - rule of thumb I read somewhere. And it makes sense, you aggravate (by compensating) something else if you don't ruin what's causing the initial pain.
  12. Never followed a plan. Just went with running one lamp post, walking one for about a 2k loop. Increased to running two posts next week, etc till I could (barely!) run the loop. Then increased distance bit by bit - laughable distances at a time. Felt like an absolute champ the first time I ran 5k continuously! From there, increased by little bits until I reached 10k, another worthy-of-celebration milestone. Bottom line(s) - don't think cycling fitness counts for anything. Don't take it too fast. Don't ramp up too fast. It takes time. When in doubt, take the shorter option. The real bottom line: Staying healthy is much more fun than recovering.
  13. The half runners must be wondering what we're on - it's just a bit of a hill. But catching that past the marathon mark bit me. Just thought stuff the rest, don't get yourself broken here. Did not want to aggravate something or get cramping, since the last couple of k's would then have been... real interesting. I also think those Garmin girls had to get earplugs because I used a couple of strong terms when I realized we had to turn left at the top there, doing more uphill before coming back down. I do not know whether I said what I thought out loud. But I'm pretty sure somebody would have uttered the same - or worse! - during the rest of the day!
  14. Better late than never... but here's my Oceans report, sports fans. To start off with, after number collection my wife's comment of "You didn't reeeeally train for this..." and she had a point. Last marathon in Sept (CT) and mostly just spent my time in the mountain. Zero long road runs. But time on the legs and did a two-day trail run Feb, which I saw as my Oceans training weekend... Then the route change - I just thought I'll take it as it comes, not having done that route at all yet. Heard the rumours, saw the profile, shrugged. And then the rain came... it was pouring in Paarl Friday evening and that obviously got the mind wandering (wondering!!) a bit. The day came and... lekker cloudy, left black bag in the car - and of course it started drizzling while we were in the chutes. At least there were one or two people around me in the same boat. And tbh, but for one shower we got along the way, the bits of rain we did get was just nice actually. I learnt from last year and started more conservatively. Ou Kaapse weg was nice for me, just a steady drag. Maybe all the time in the mountain helped there! Not that I was sprinting... Despite me liking downhills as a rule, the OKW descend was taken very easily. And I enjoyed the rest of the run... and then they decided to sneak Southern Cross drive in there. Holy cow, that was a killer. I joined the walking gang there at stages. After Southern Cross, just fun - and I think this was mostly due to starting easier. Was bang on my target time, despite the route change, so very happy. After having given up the idea of my target time up Southern Cross, so it felt really sweet to have dragged it back. The only logistical thing that really played with my mind was this - only complaint of the run. I don't really like Coke during an event, so I love the Powerade sachets. From 21k mark (I think) till... heck, it was late on, no powerade! Even more confusing, also no water sachets. You literally had to stop and drink water from cups. But, all in all awesome day out, felt really good afterwards. Only side issue is an infection behind and seeming to go under my one toe nail that is going to become interesting...that's a new one for me.
  15. Okay my comments... and feedback on some of the questions. I have the gen1 Freedoms, love them and only had that one day it gave me "tired feet" - and quite stiff afterwards. And like I mentioned, I ran with a buddy who does not like to go uphill, but hammered down. And coming down Red Hill and down that little pass into Simons Town (you climb out of Simons Town on the Argus) he just let loose. I will definitely be getting another pair of Freedom when these are done. Day-to-day, because of the lack of longevity of the Kinvaras, I started running daily runs with NB FF Zante, always a few models back on specials. Works well enough... My Altras I used to rotate with them are also long since buggered. I used to have Triumphs and now have Rides of "long distance" shoes. There are very little if any actual difference between them. That said, I am comparing an older Triumph to a newer Ride, so more current Triumph may be a bit more different to the same era Ride, but... pffff... I'm likely anyways not pro enough to notice it. I'll most likely experiment with the Freedoms on longer runs a bit and see at the Rides' end of life whether I won't just stay on Freedom for longer runs. Because truthfully... heck, I only run a couple of long road runs per year. And PS to Carpet - I also love my Peregrines! My shoe booster may actually go into a new pair of those, whatever the new model may be. My 5's lasted so long that I went directly to the 8's just when they came out. But have to have a backup/rotation (esp in winter...) pair, since my 5's are now genuinely retired. (And my Altras also at the point of joining them...)
  16. Carpet, well done! Esp under the conditions... that's not very lekker. Heal up quickly... I've seen you listed your Freedom's as shoes - is that what you used for the race? My feet were very tired after doing only a 30 in them, so after that thought I'd not use them for longer. But that may also just have been on the day - we did klap a couple of downhills quite hard.
  17. Anywhere you can squeeze your car in...(?) That's the way I usually go. I've given up very quickly on trying to pre-plan the parking. Unless there's somebody here with good ideas. I just usually stop in the suburbs area up from the start. Walk a bit there, walk a bit from the finish.
  18. Cool, thanks. More worried about holding up people. Haven't been on a MTB properly in a good while.
  19. Ehhhrrr... stupid question. Having not done this event yet I entered for the duo (Pixie dust?). I subsequently heard the trails are quite a lot of singletrack - so how technical are these for a more of a runner type duo athlete... But then again, I aim to go for enjoyment!
  20. Well, we as a nation are a bunch of long distance masochists. If I look at how quickly entries sell out neither Oceans or Comrades have the need to do this. If they want to make more money, simply allow more Ultra/Comrades runners. If they can sort out the logistics around busses and transferring the second leg runners to midway, surely another 2000 ultra runners could not have been a problem. I say that again with a friend in mind who ran a silver Oceans last year and now sit without an entry... so I might be somewhat one-eyed.
  21. One question is "what it is at the moment" - and what is your aim? If you're wanting to improve your marathon time, you will likely get a vastly different answer than hardly being able to complete a 5k run and wanting to improve on that. More running will help for option 2 just to get adapted to running and settled. But after that, to run fast, you have to run fast and again adapt your muscles, posture, etc. to that. Strength and stretching (IMHO) is supportive and helps in keeping your body more "balanced" and hopefully injury free.
  22. SeaBee

    Formula 1...

Still maintain this is how Ricciardo beat Vettel in that one season at RBR. Vettel wanted to leave, knew the clauses... But that's just me.
  23. Music, yes. I don't need an ultra run for music. I can only laugh at my own jokes and one liners for that long. And yes, I can still enjoy the nature around me.
