  1. Sorry, but am |I reading that report correctly... In our country where they play rugby year-round, have a truckload of players to test - they only tested 342 over the entire year?! If they just look at most school first teams and the way those "boys" look nowadays... wait, I'd rather shut up before I get shot.
  2. Candz, I hope your silence means you're still sifting through the photo's! Or have I missed your reply? How was the first one?
  3. Haha, mine should've been in comics font - I joked with Ronnie's "crawl"... I was very happy with my time and would have been happy with it even if I was feeling good! Having not felt good in the lead-up and having the niggle returning (which you can clearly see in my splits) I am actually over the moon with my time. And despite everything, and maybe because I was aware of not feeling top of the pops, I ended the run feeling good and never felt so good after any marathon - even today the stiffness is nowhere compared to my usual agony shuffle up the stairs. (I am deliberately not mentioning down!) A colleague also just said that I really don't look like somebody that ran yesterday. I expected the hip to stiffen up during the day - nothing! I am sooo baffled about that.
  4. I also managed to crawl in at 3:46... But having told a friend of mine the afternoon before that I'm feeling so crappy that I'm most likely not even going to make sub-4 and expecting to do another run to quali for Oceans (if I do it) I am very happy with it. Which was the point where I grabbed some wine and stopped worrying about it. Lo and behold, all was fine, hip became a bit of a beach later on, but I'm happy with what transpired. And ironically, after the shower my hip felt better than it had in months! Even now... Who says running don't cure injuries?!
  5. Candz, just enjoy it! And bugger the rest, take pics. You'll never again run a first marathon! I run (and ride) with my phone and often can be found in the middle of "races" taking pics. You should've seen me on (esp.) my first Oceans! All the best, enjoy it - and I want to see some of YOUR pics on this thread afterwards...
  6. Agree with Jewbacca - and if you entered for this, you did not plan to go smash the marathon anyways. And the TR is not technical. Just enjoy it! The medical kit recommendation comes with every trail run. And don't worry, a friend did the Oceans TR followed by the Ultra the next day a year or two ago. She still klapped the ultra in under 5:30 if I remember correctly. And Oceans TR is a somewhat different beast.
  7. I'm not as paraat for CTM with major targets and all. My last long run was on... Easter weekend. Will just wing it. Got a lesson on the bike leg of the Dirty Double on the weekend how quickly things can go wrong! (Well, it started on the Trail run leg...) A back spasm from h3ll after some slipping and sliding on the trail run. 10k into the bike ride it just grabbed. Interesting day from there on in.
  8. With Hulk's history (of moving to the wrong seat at the wrong time) that would mean the end of RBR. And, more serious, they have a larger than enough talent pool they've invested in to pick from.
  9. Camelbak bladder should fit most other brands. With the soft flasks - I'm lazy. So I just tilt my head down, lift my bottle up (without taking it out) slightly and take a sip... I prefer the snugness at the rear and will on long runs even prefer to fill up. But I know where to find water in my local mountain. But you must do what works for you - there's no right or wrong way and we all have different preferences.
  10. Get a running vest instead of a backpack. No bobbing, you hardly feel it since it's snug and if you go on shorter runs, no bladder and bottle(s) only. I actually cannot recall when last I used a bladder. So no, it makes no (or hardly any) diffs if that's the approach.
  11. What news did I miss...? Where's Gerda Steyn? I don't see any of the Oceans female podium there, for that matter.
  12. Ronnie, relax about Simon's Town 30... Ran it last year and those last couple of k's are terrible after that long uphill stretch (you then realise why we fly so there in Argus) and down towards SimonsTown... and then the rollers into the wind. If you don't feel terrible there, you've done something wrong - or went for a cruise, which is not the case for a 2:35 on that route! Relax, prep and take CTM as it comes. Go for your goals.
  13. Oh bugger yeah, correct! I actually thought of Oceans... But still, that's also a very nice run! Word of warning - don't be right at the back at the start. There's a section that narrows going up shortly after the start and there's no room to overtake - and shortly thereafter you strike the first single-track.
  14. You won't regret it! I did one a good couple of years ago, went into it ill but still it is an amazing run. One section that "caught" me a bit was a bit of rock you have to go up behind Blockhouse. (I have found through trail running that I have a mild fear of heights - too bad!) But it is a great run and some spectacular views. And esp coming down from up-country, you'll love both the Table Mountain and the Kirstenbosch sections. That is, presuming the route hasn't changed all that much in 5 years.
  15. I know it's flat, but you NEVER say that about a marathon...
  16. At this stage I'm just returning from a repeat calve niggle I picked up slipping in the mountain a while ago. Also got back on the bike a bit for some cross-training, the body is starting to feel the effects of just running. So starting to feel like it's coming back to business, but at this stage just enjoying the darkness! (Though I'm not even going to set an alarm for tomorrow morning with what has been predicted weather-wise for us!)

If it was the bike, then surely his team mate would have been 2nd in the championship...?! Sorry Captain, just had to pull your leg!
  18. This strap should not be as prone to powerline interference as some of the older straps, so I doubt that it could be that - which is one situation where I got such readings in the past. The other was when my battery in my strap was close to going... might be worth checking out?
  19. Jackes, to answer your question - I use 12l Salomon and whether it's a short or long run, it works. Does not bounce and you hardly know it's there. Mate of mine runs with the Aonije vests and swears by them - he's even ditched his Salomon pack in favour of it. So if it was me, I'd go for the 10l pack, given that it's the same version as the one my mate uses. I mean we had a quick run the other day of under 2h and he used his 10l pack, I used my 12l pack, both with just one water bottle, cell phone and keys - and we dropped our lights in there as well when it became light enough. But it's not bulky, so if you want one pack, go for the large one. Just... go for a vest, not a "backpack" like the camelbak's from mtb-style.
  20. Maybe I'm just missing something - well I obviously am - but how does this 2-day ride work? Results of last year only shows one day, the routes for all distances only have one map... do you ride the same route two days in a row or what? At least contemplating this, but with Cape Town Marathon the following week, it may not be the wisest... Edit - sorry, I now see that it's two days covering different distances, not a multi-day event.
  21. I'm also in this situation where I was at a recent workshop with the Greylings and they also belief in polarized training. With most run being laughable slow and then hard interval days. Read the other day a general guideline ito pace is that it should be about... from memory 110-120% of marathon pace. That is scary slow... And Landie also stated that in the beginning you'll have to walk at times, just not to go over that thresholds. So that margin (from a different source) seems to be reasonably correct. I still have to get around to do it. I go slow, but to go that slow just feels wrong. But I might very well give it a shot later in winter and see what gives. At this stage it feels like I'll get too cold by running that slow! Problem is, I also don't do the interval days, though I do have the perfect situation for that. So if I do that, I presume the slow day thereafter will make sense.
  22. Barry, I am tending to agree with Stretch. That's not lack of training or anything to that tune. It sounds very similar to something that has happened to me a couple of times in the past, before finding a very simple cure - for my situation. So maybe just have a check-up and see if there's not a small issue. Or it may simply be something you ate or drank along the way that was off. All the best man, I know how it feels to train for a goal race, then only to lay on the side whilst reversing your nutrition.
  23. First race in ages I've watched - since something always happens at Canada. As it turns out, the most boring Canadian GP in living memory, plus then that bull. Think they've lost a lot of viewers last night.
  24. All the best everybody! Hope it goes well - and that you can battle through what comes your way. Have fun!
