  1. Hey guys. I have a Scott Scale 29 team and want to upgrade my Rockshox Tora. I have been looking at the DT Swiss XMM 100mm single shot. I dont know too much about these shocks as I was more accustomed to riding Downhill(4 years ago). What are your thoughts on this fork.
  2. So since I twisted my ankle last week, I decided to take on the job of sanding and respraying my Scott Scale frame. Finished putting the bike back together last night, and still deciding on decals etc. Total cost so far is around R500 materials and about 6-7 hours of hard labour with all the sanding.
  3. Hi guys, looking for the 101 on taking apart my bike and cleaning, lubeing and re-asembly. What tips and methods do you have? I have a DS scott
  4. I have an old Scott with V-Brakes. I want to upgrade to hydraulic disc brakes and I have a few questions. I’ve noticed that all bikes have a disc mount on the lower part of the seat stay. My disc mount is on the lower part of the chain stay. Will this make a difference as to what calliper I need? Are callipers a standard size and are all mounts a standard size? How will I route the hoses? My bike only has cable stops on it and obviously the hoses will not fit the narrower stops.
  5. If you had to choose any of the following bikes, which one would it be? I know that there are much more on the market, but lets try to narrow it down to these 2 for the discussion (to compare against others, start your own topic please ) The Scott comes in about 400g lighter (10.4kg, give or take a few grams) and sports SRAM XX and Shimano XTR brakes. The Specialized is specced more modestly with XO and Magura MT6. The Scott wheelset is 28h and the Specialized is 32h (probably a better wheelset). Price on both is similar. Scott has their CTD remote system that operates from the handlebar with the flick of a switch and Specialized relies on their Brain system to manage the suspension. Which one of the two (only these two) would you pick and why?
  6. Has anyone looked at the new 2013 Scott Spark 29? Apparently will have a lot more techno-wizardry built in. Opinions please. Is it worth saving money for this? http://www.bikerumor.com/2012/05/20/fox-unveils-2013-icd-electronic-suspension-remote-system-more/
  7. Has anybody perhaps had any dealings with SCOTTOLI on the HUB ?
  8. I recently bought a 29er (at last). It is a Scott Scale 940 (2013). It has A combo wheelset of: Hubs - Syncros Spokes - DT Swiss Rim - Alexrims I want to upgrade to a lighter wheelset for racing. My bike weight is 12 kg (large) at the moment. Will I shead some weight or must I cont my current wheelset? I Have R5000 to spend. Which wheelset should I go for? Looking at brands like fulcrum, easton or Shimano XT.
  9. Hi I Have searched virtually every cycling store in Johannesburg in the search of a Scott Mens mountain bike jersey. Does anyone know who in Johannesburg stocks Scott apparel? Thanks

  11. According to Anita Meyer, CLT Boland Project, after their latest camera checking excursion in mid October it is clear that three Cape Leopards, Scott (BM12, Boland Male #12), Popeye (BM17, Boland Male #17) and Olive (BF14, Boland Female #14) have become regulars on the Wines2Whales routes. “Popeye (BM17, Boland Male #17) and Olive (BF14, Boland Female #14) have been spotted a number of times on the De Rust routes, while Scott (BM12, Boland Male #12) seems to be enjoying the Schapenberg trails. Thanks to the Wines2Whales cameras we have identified a new female that we would not otherwise have picked up on, and we also have new locations for known individuals. As Leopards are such wide-ranging animals, all locations identified by the cameras aid us in forming a rough idea of each individual’s home range. The cameras have also once again captured other animals in action such as large-spotted genet, small grey mongoose, porcupine, grysbok, duiker, honey badger and caracal,” says Meyer. In September 2011 the organizers of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Adventure and Race powered by Maserati showed their support of the CLT Boland Project by donating five digital camera traps to the project. Information on the three leopards spotted on the Wines2Whales route: Scott (BM12, Boland Male #12) has been recorded over a very large area stretching from just north of Sir Lowry’s Pass, through the Steenbras Mountains and across the Kogelberg Biosphere reserve. Popeye (BM17, Boland Male #17) ranges quite extensively throughout Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve and the Groenlandberg mountains and has previously been photographed near Houw Hoek Inn. Olive (BF14, Boland Female #14) has been recorded at three locations in the Groenlandberg Reserve within the dominant male BM17’s territory. For more information on the Cape Leopard and the work of the CLT Boland Project, go to www.capeleopard.org.za and www.facebook.com/capeleopard. Event Information: Starting in the Wine lands of Somerset West, riders will cross through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, historic roads and mountain passes, nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus! CONTEGO WINES2WHALES MTB ADVENTURE: Friday, 2 November 2012 until Sunday, 4 November 2012 CONTEGO WINES2WHALES MTB RACE: Friday, 9 November 2012 until Sunday, 11 November 2012 Start Venue: Lourensford Estate, Somerset West Race Village: Oak Valley Sports Field, Elgin (Western Cape) Finish: Onrus Caravan Park, just outside of Hermanus (Western Cape) Follow us on Twitter: @w2wmtb Follow us on Facebook: Contego Wines2Whales For more information on the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Adventure and Race powered by Maserati visit www.wines2whales.co.za Click here to view the article
  12. The fourth edition of the nine-day stage race, which starts on April 26 next year, will see 300 teams from at least 16 different countries represented on the start line at Heidelberg, just south of Johannesburg. According to one of the organisers Craig Wapnick, there had been a surge of interest from the United States, Britain, Belgium and Australia in particular. “This is primarily due to the great magazine coverage we’ve received there as well as word of mouth from riders who’ve done the event.” To date, 70 foreign riders – compared to 28 in 2012 – have signed up for what used to be South Africa’s best-kept secret, with more queries being received on a daily basis. With at least 16 countries represented at next year’s event, the nine-day Old Mutual joBerg2c is steadily growing its reputation in international mountain biking circles. Photo: Kelvin Trautman Wapnick said this represented a steady and significant growth on the inaugural event, which fielded 12 overseas participants. He said negotiations were under way with well-known international riders who had expressed an interest in undertaking the 900km journey to Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. “It’s a great full-service ride across South Africa, on awesome trails through almost a hundred private farms, with genuine local hospitality and, of course, delicious food.” As an added bonus, said Wapnick, the final three days followed the same route as the world’s largest fully serviced mountain bike stage race – the sani2c. He said a longer event such as this was ideal for visitors wanting to maximise their stay and get a real feel for the South African landscapes and people. “The Old Mutual joBerg2c is known for its incredible single track, which is perfect for the millions of trail-loving riders around the world.” Although the event was sanctioned by Cycling South Africa, Wapnick said UCI points were not a current focus as the event catered for all levels of riders. “Our aim is to attract people who love riding rather than those who enjoy racing. However, we do make sure that the racing snakes are handsomely rewarded.” This year’s race offered a prize purse of R330 000. For riders just beyond SA’s borders (countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe and Botswana) there is an unofficial African Challenge, with bragging rights going to the winners. He said those who were pressed for time could opt for the three or six-day versions of the event. Enter the Old Mutual joBerg2c before January 31 at www.joberg2c.co.za. 13. Hi all, I am looking to buy a frame, what do you think is best value for money between the momsen sl929 or scott scale 29er pro?? Not judging on looks?? Both cost the same
  14. Hi guys I'm planning on getting a 29er, and i'm specifically concerned about the geometry of the frame. Which bike make + model has the 'best' geometry, being fast, best handling (comfort is not the biggest concern). I'm looking at a 29er stumpjumper Specialized. What are thoughts on other bikes like Scott and merida.
  15. Unfortunately I am not the happiest CWC client; but due to getting a mondo burn here - I will adjust to make amends... My lady friend went there willing to spend quite a bit of hard earned cash on a brand new bike last week and they happily sold her the bike. She bought the Scott Spark 60 in lime green/white/black - with a couple of accessories for R15k. A good price considering the shop did a tubeless conversion pre-sale and she got a helmet, pedals and shoes all inclusive in this price. She went in the morning paid for the bike and arranged to collect it the afternoon when all is sorted as you would with a new bike. She collected the bike, girl by herself putting all her trust in what I thought was a decent LBS. She got home, kitted up and took off to Jonkershoek for a ride. being new to mountain biking, she assumed everything was in order with the bike and had a fairly pleasant ride. I went over the next day and immediately realized the bike was not set up properly. Here is my concern - other than the tubeless conversion, they did not have a mechanic anywhere near that bike. - The rear suspension was set up for an 80-90kg rider - she is small - so no suspension movement on the rear triangle, very little on the front. I am around the 76kg mark and with me on the bike the suspension barely sagged, and this is not due to magic Scott suspension design, this is because the shock was over inflated even for me. - The fork preload was wound all the way to positive/hard. - the top link between the shock and frame was not bolted on - the allen bolts supposed to be torqued to 5hm - was not tightened in any way - the one was 5 full turns out - as in turning with your hand, no tools needed - meaning one more ride and 'good bye bolt'. - The tubeless setup was decent but once again - inflated to over 3 bar. I know you inflate the tyres hard to get the tubeless setup to set - bet then either deflate pre hand over - or instruct as to what pressures would be good for someone of the buyer's weight - I did a once over the bike with my multi-tool and found quite a few bolts that was not even remotely tightened as they should be - I don't believe in over tightening and even with a micro-multi tool you could tighten these without any strain. - The center lock on the front rotor was loose PSS's should be the norm with all new bikes. a PRE SALE SERVICE - it takes a couple of minutes, and saves the new bike owner countless headaches! I should have phoned the shop before posting this, but the circumstances in this case also meant that the bike is no longer within service distance. I am not saying the shop is useless or slips up a lot, this might be 1 in 100, unfortunately it leaves you with an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
  16. Ok, so I decided to let go of my "old" frame and upgrade. Just want to upgrade the frame, so here is the few I have in mind. Which one will you choose? And why? I'm not going to put prices with - I just want your opinion without you looking at prices. Don't look at the specs on these bikes - it's for the frame only. Here goes: Scott Spark 30 (carbon) 2008/2009? Giant Anthem X (aluminium) 2011 Bianchi Caal 8000 (aluminium) not sure about year Sintesi 505 (aluminium) 2011 Specialized epic , but I can't find a small in my price range.... So, what do you think? Please help. Thanks!
  17. I finally succumbed to all the marketing hipe so I bought me one and sold my 26er. Frankly I dont care if it makes me faster or slower, it simply looks cool.

  19. Certainly made me think about all the time I spend in the saddle. I specialise in century races mostly. With the odd exception of the One Tonner. Nevva trained for the DC. It is a great event and requires too much time to train within my calendar. Checkit out, Rider. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Training Center: Can intensity substitute for training volume? Q.Dear BCSM, Can you explain the difference (physiologically) between high-intensity-interval training and endurance miles? I’ve heard that intervals can increase endurance almost as much as doing long rides. I am very busy and don’t have a ton of training time each week, but still want to hit some local races occasionally. Can I get away with one or two long rides a week if I couple them with two days of intervals? What’s a good program for those of us who only have about 10 hours a week to train? Help! — Scott A. Scott, There have been several research studies (see below for references) performed in the past five years that show similar training responses for individuals engaged in very short workouts consisting of several short maximal sprint efforts (4-6 X 30-second maximum sprints) versus a control group performing several hours of endurance training. One danger in extrapolating the results of many of these studies to an already trained athlete is that many of the studies involved very minimally trained individuals, and very low overall training volume (less than four hours per week for the endurance-trained subjects). I have not seen any studies that use already well trained subjects or higher overall training volume training typical of cyclists, though it is possible that such a study exists. With respect to the amount of training necessary to be competitive, you might find that lower training volumes than typically recommended can be quite effective. I coach many elite junior and master’s cyclists who only train 6-12 hours per week but are competitive in Colorado and even nationally and internationally. I typically recommend two weekly high-intensity training sessions, typically with just one longer ride per weekend (2 to 4 hours of endurance) — occasionally two longer rides per week. On other shorter endurance days, I do suggest including some very short (5-15 second) maximal sprints every 5-10 minutes to get a better training effect than just riding steady base/endurance miles, possibly for the reasons indicated by the studies below.
