  1. South African non drafting races have lots of complaints about big packs. Too many athletes on the course. Too small gaps between start waves. Too few referees. All explanations used to justify what is an athlete's decision to break the rules and cheat. IM Durban 70.3 seems to have taken drafting to new heights from the race reports. Referees will always struggle to enforce rules where the penalty is seen as not significant. Getting to recover for four minutes is obviously not harsh enough for athletes to choose to comply with the rules. I believe we need to create an attitude where every athlete chooses to obey the rules of the sport and loses the 'let see what I can get away with' approach. At Challenge Roth they pioneered a new penalty system for people caught drafting. It is called the "Fair Kilometer" Instead of sending an athlete to the penalty box for 8 minutes if he or she is given a black (drafting) card, the participants gets to combine a 5-minute penalty with an additional running penalty, This penalty is an additional 1km loop off the main course (read: loop of shame) and has to be done at kilometer 30 of the run course. Sounds like a very emphatic penalty to me. Something to be really afraid of. What do you think?
  2. Hi All Where is the best place to have a professional TT bike setup for triathlons? I am Cape Town based. Thanks
  3. Hi All I am sure this topic has been debated to death, but cant for the life of me track down a thread. With that said, I am looking for some advice regarding a bike I can use for 70.3 / Ironman and standard Olympic triathlons. I am not looking for a TT bike, but more a 'aero' bike with agents available in Cape Town. Thus far, I am considering the following 2: Scott Foil 20 Giant TCR Advanced 2 CompactBoth seem to be in the similar price range (20 - 24k) and offer similar aero frame designs. Perhaps any other bike I am not considering? Thanks in advance
  4. Not even a stumble on the run could stop Alistair Brownlee‘s return to the top of the World Triathlon Series podium in Cape Town on Sunday, as the most successful athlete in series history took his total number of titles to 18. Click here to view the article
  5. Well-known triathlete and owner of Triathlon Plus SA magazine, Glen Gore, will participate in this year’s Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town with his 13 year old daughter, Tegan. 6. Does anybody know where one can rent a swimming wetsuit in the Cape Town area for less than R650 or 3 weeks? Or maybe a friendly owner willing to rent his? I am looking to partake in a triathlon but cannot foresee paying R650 to rent a suit I will be using for hopefully 30minutes.

  8. Six months ago Songo Fipaza could not float, let alone swim. On Sunday the 29th March he completed open water 3.8km swim - then topped that with the 180km cycle and 42km run in the Iron Man championship in Mandela Bay. A great cyclist and runner, Songo’s dream of competing in Triathlons would remain that –unless he could learn to stay afloat and then to swim. Click here to view the article

  11. Ai, didn't think I'd be back posting about this event so soon. Saw the following tweet and got out the credit card: Crazy that the event sells out so quickly. Definitely room for another event in SA somewhere.

  14. After much debate I have decided to start training for a triathlon which means a bike. I'm looking to spend somewhere in the region of around R15-17k to leave myself another R3-5k for the rest of the necessities like helmet, shoes etc keeping to a nice round R20k all in for the first instalment (spending more is inevitable). After much reading and chatting to some mates in the know I have settled on a 105 groupset as the only real condition of what I'm getting with the rest of it pretty much up in the air. I'd love some advice on brands for both bike and equipment as well as the best places to go shopping around for new stuff. Thanks in advance.
  15. The date for "The Wik" Offroad triathlon, at Stanford Lake College in Magoebaskloof has been announced - 22 March 2015. This race has been my target since last year for my very first triathlon, and training is going great. Has anyone done this race before, or doing it this year? Any insights, tips or comments welcome!
  16. To start, I am a novice bike rider, South African expat living abroad in South Korea and preparing to take part in my first triathlon. I am 6 foot tall, female, with an inseam of 84cm's. Short and sweet~ bikes are expensive in Korea, I have a few options. I deduced that a road bike would be best to start with as a novice, adding aerobars and lighter wheels if need be. At the bike shop - An new Orbea M305 carbon bike for ~R18 000 (recommended an L size) A new Focus SL2.0 AG2R Aluminium bike for ~R16 000 (recommended an L size) A 2nd hand Litespeed C1R carbon ~R35 000 which is seriously pushing the budget (seat to be cut down to size says the shop owner O_O) *pic attached (this is what information I could glean from them through the language barrier. Then - A 2nd hand Velocite Geos Frame (XL) with saddle/bars for ~R10 000 *pic attached (my arms have to be straightened fully to reach the bars as seen in picture, I think it MIGHT be too big, but I am unsure how to size it) link: http://www.velocite-bikes.com/geos-frameset.html# Add wheels from shop- aluminium at R10 000; Carbon between R13 000 (American Eagle) upto R40 000. Or get wheels in SA. There are also Scott's, Cello's and Pinarello's at another shop, but I didn't investigate further as the guys didn't seem very knowledgable. Are any of these options an obvious yes, or should I consider getting a bike in SA and taking it back in February? I would greatly appreciate anyones feedback to help this fledgling triathletre get off her feet~ and into the saddle! TIA
  17. Hi, I am in the process of finalising accommodation for IronMan in March. The previous times we stayed at the City lodge, which is awesome and very convenient. However, it is getting a bit pricey to stay there. Any other places that can be recommended? I was looking at the garden court, 50% discount with vitality but it seems a bit out of the way. Familiy, especially kids love the City lodge because they can stand in front of the hotel to support and run to the hotel room when needed. So, it is now down to a matter of convenience vs price. Was wondering if anyone has any other places they can recommend. Maybe some info on the garden court from people that have stayed there previously? We normally stay at the garden court with 70.3, so I am not worried about the hotel, but more the logistics of getting the family to support etc. Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks
  18. Has anyone entered this event, is it worth doing? See entries are closing today.
  19. In our article last week, we spoke about the proposed benefit of compression garments to enhance recovery following an intense cycling test. We are sticking to the recovery theme this week, but we are changing exercise modes and athletes. Triathletes are challenged to improve their performances in three different exercise modes. In order to achieve this they will often perform more than one session in a single day and often train in two modes of exercise (swimming, cycling and running). Click here to view the article
  20. Multisport athlete Matt Daneel will again this year line up at the 5th annual Slanghoek Triathlon held in the Slanghoek Valley outside Rawsonville. The event will be held over two days. All the action start and finish at the Breeland Wine Cellar. Click here to view the article
  21. I'm looking into purchasing a GPS tracking watch to track all three Tri disciplines. I went to Sportsmans Warehouse this past weekend (purely because of the range they stock) but there doesn't appear to be a unit that stands out above the rest. A number of the units have a battery life of 8h, not sure what the point of this is when my target time for the Full Ironman is 12h. Any suggestions from those in the know?
  22. I am looking for some input on which is the better triathlon gps watch between the Garmin 910XT and the Garmin Fenix 2. Does anyone know when the Garmin 910XT's update/upgrade may be due?
  23. Hi Guys - sorry if this is an obvious question or not right for this forum. I have entered my first half iron man in Durbs in October and basically learning to swim at the moment and hoping that my riding and running shouldn't be a problem. What I'm not clear about is what you ride in, do you wear your riding shorts with padding etc while you swim under a wetsuit and then just pull the suit off and ride. Then do you run in cycling shorts with the padding? Or am I getting the whole thing wrong and you just wear normal tights and ride with no padding?
