The surf was smallish - four foot - but on a shallow reef like that the water moves like a steam train. Snapped my board and got dragged along the reef after my first bail, and went to drown my sorrows in the Brass Bell rather. I tried a bit at varsity, then in the years immediately afterwards. Could get up to my feet, and ride the face of a wave, but that was about it. Been a big fan of wave photography since my mom bought me an awesome surfing book by Sam George for graduating.
