I keep hearing about the spruit route!

Where does it start and end , is it safe to ride yourself and level of Technicality ? Want to ride tomorrow at about 15:00?

I went over my bars in the rain a few weeks ago going down from Republic under the power lines.... didn't see a huge donga that had appeared because of the erosion.

The best place to ride from is Nando's in Conrad drive up to Emmarentia Dam, around the dam for 2 or 3 laps and then back. Also cool to ride from the Woolworths parking at the bottom of Bryanston Drive (near River Road) up the Spruit to Emmarentia and back again. Easy riding, flat and fast. Keep left on the trails and avoid oncoming cyclists

I heard someone say they ride 'the spruit' from Emmarentia to Kyalami??

True or False?

I have once gone with a group from Paulshof M&B (end of the spruit for me) to Northern Farms all offroad. Will not try that again with all the hi-jackings in that area.

Yes you can, but not sure the way we did it was correct - we just continued from Paulshof/Witkoppen over the road down to Sunninghill and met a guy who had a key for the bottom gate. There is a large gate right at the bottom if you follow the 'Spruit. He opened it for us, and we rode through the Leeukop prison grounds until we got through to Kyalami. Must be another way but we were lucky.

In the late 90's and 2000/2001 I used to ride up the north route a lot. You keep going north until you run out of houses, which then becomes open fields and at that point you see Leeukop (the hill with the reservoir on top, just before the prison) up on your left. The route to Kyalami race track would be to go past Leeukop and onto the tar road that led through the prison grounds, up the hill and down the other side and then follow the dirt road right into Kyalami race track itself. I'd pop out the front gates of the race track, down to the river again, and then follow north east all the way to Irene. I had a nice 100km offroad route that way.

Not sure if you're allowed to cycle through the prison anymore, or if the sneaky backdoor to the race track is still open. But the area after that seems to have been all developed now, so it seems the old trail to Irene is 'no longer'.

I'm sure the stretch to Leeukop hill is still doable though.

True! best saved for the winter months though as it is very overgrown and muddy at the moment. Download a google earth map here: My link

Like Cat-i said... the upper sections are safe. Delta park to Emmarentia dam. I've personally never had issues on the lower parts either (and I've ridden it solo quite a lot)... but they say that the bridge under 12th Ave is a potential hijacking spot. But yeah... the Delta Park and up is the cleanest part of it too, so stick to there.

As for technical... the standard Spruit route is easy-peasy. A few avoidable obstacles (or as I call them, fun-spots), like the bomb-hole in blairegowrie.

Then you get the 'Spruit-less-traveled'... this involves the DHL, Scout Hall and Hurlingham jump lines. These in my opinion are the best part of the spruit. But it depends what you're looking for. Unless you're planning on hitting some rather large gap jumps (around 6m, some of them)... I suggest you give these a skip.

Very possibly true! I've ridden from Emmarentia down to Paulshoff/Rivonia by myself before... on a 17kg freeride bike. I haven't been beyond where the Spruit intersects Witkoppen, but it may very well continue all the way out to Kyalami.

I have ridden from Chilli Lane (Sunninghill) to Emmerentia a few times. It hasn't been obvious that there is a route that keeps going north, but then I haven't really looked too hard...

Going to check it out this weekend!

Havent been since the big rains we had a couple months back!

That powerline section is a bit crazy - but tons of fun...

Thanks Ricky, I shall have a look at it at home.

Looks like this thread cleared the 'confusion'
