Okez,

I have a set of alexrim xc 44. I can't seem to find if they are tubeless commpadible.

What would it cost to do the conversion if not?

Cheers,

Andy

These are definately convertable - a store would probably charge you in the region of 500 to 1000 excluding tyres, but you could just get the rim strips and sealant yourself from lbs or chain reaction and do it yourself for a fraction of the cost. There are diy ways aswell, but you need some skill and luck for it to work; this method involves good sealant and and a couple of bmx tubes ....

Every single rim on the MTB scene is tubeless convertible. It needn't be anything special.

The best way nowadays to do tubeless conversions is to do away with the silly Stan's rubber liner with built-in valve.

You cover the spoke holes in Stan's yellow tape.

You insert a Stan's Olympic valve.

You half install-the tyre (a new one works best) and fill it with the snot of your choice. Complete the installation, smear the sidewalls/beads with soapy water, remove the valve's core and hit it with a compressor.

After it has seated, you can insert the valve and inflate it once more to your preferred pressure.

Ta daaaa!

Cost: Valves R85 each.

Tape, about R50 per wheel depending on source.

Snot - About R180 for the two wheels.

New tyres - the sky's the limit.

Air. Free.

The BMX tube way works as well and has been well documented here. Just search for Ghetto Tubeless Conversion.

Worth emphasising what JB said - use a compressor to inflate, not a bomb. Something in the bomb makes the sleanant (aka snot ;)) clog up into a ball - i learnt this the hard way. thus bombs are emergency only (after which you need to prob re-fill sealant when you get back home!)

Done right, you don't need a bomb or a compressor. I used a floor pump (Serfas) on a pair of Geax's (Am Classics) and a pair of Michelins (Mavic 317).

Differ with you on that, it's very tyre/rim dependant. Some will seat with just a floor pump with the valve core removed, but for example the training wheelset I just had converted (shimano mt15 wheels with maxxis aspen tyres) needs a compressor or co2, couldn't get them to seat with my floor pump.

Though I saw ads a while back for a Lezyne Dirt Air Drive pump or such that supposedly moves enough air to seat mtb conversions. Any one tried that pump ?

i did a tubeless conversion on my bike yesterday, wish i had read this post first but hey i feel the R1500 is well spent, bought Stans tubeless conversion kit for R600 and then went to town on 2 new tires, have been lusting after a set of Maxxis wait for it "LUST' tires for a while now so took the plunge and bought a crossmark for the rear and a monorail for the front, used a compressor to inflate as they just wouldn't seat with a floor pump.

also bout a side wall repair kit, plugging kit in case of a puncture and 10 bombs as they were ridiculously cheap.

the conversion was a bit challenging but was easy enough to do for me, maybe i was just lucky but had no issues at all other than spilling a bit of sealant.

Ghetto'd my holiday bike today using some used tubeless tyres off my main bike (Crossmark rear - Nevegal front). Used 2 X R20 bmx tubes, 160ml's of SlimePro (R50 pro rata), Took just 1 hour - used a floor pump - seated perfectly - works great so far!! Cost R90 in total (excluding tyres)!

Reckon it is rim / tyre dependant. Did Maxxis on DT Swiss rims yesterday and inflated with a floor pump no probs at all.

Actually, let's refine that: Probably tubeless tyres will be inflatable with floor pump as they are better at sealing against rims, whereas non-tubeless tyres may well need bomb / compressor help. I've used those cheap cigarette lighter type compressors and they work fine as well.

Until the government can find a way to tax us on that.

Johan, what/which valve do you use for a Mavic 717 rim where they use a removable plastic shim in the valve hole so that you can use either presta or schrader valves.
