my first instinct is to say Hooked Lip Rhino, but the horn appears to be to short, so possibly an Indian Rhino. But I think I will stick with the Hooked Lip.

So I was commissioned to take pics of a fancy house in bedfordview on saturday, and the next thing i check behind me and there's this owl, in bedfordview..... HUH???

Cool Pic anyway..

I've had my own visitor the last few weeks, comning and going as he pleases. I gather they are juvenile spotted eagle owls that have been evicted from their parent's nest. They are still learning to be owls, so they have no "street cred" so to speak. So they hang out in the open, fly around during the day, and are generally clueless. The other birds in my garden hate the thing, and dive bomb him all day, hoping to make life so uncomfortable for him he flies somewhere else. They know what he is actually capable of doing once he figures it all out !

@Dangle: how did you do the HDR effect? using HDR software or Photoshop (GIMP)? I'm keen to try it but have no idea how to go about it except shooting 3 shots with big exposure differences.

Hi , I used an Aperture preset with some other editing as well.

The pic was taken with the Fuji X-100, it's quite a wide angle fixed lens, so I took it with the intention to crop as well.

From my Canon.

Haha, That owl will dominate them when it grows up.. Did u have a serious zoom on your lens?? I was using 200mm, couldnt get close enough, and it was dark, so the shutter had to be open for some time and the owls didnt stand completely still. So lost some sharpness.. Ur pic is really good, pity about the flash in the eyes tho, would be cool to take it out.. Nice blurry back ground..

A little bit of unconventional fun for the weekend, enough to make some photo guys cringe

I'm wondering, how many people shooting RAW and how many jpg? I've started shooting RAW but find it's taking too long to save between images, and it's pretty big image file. But is RAW any better than jpg really (I prefer converting to png myself)?

Eiger, looks like we in the same boat ! Trying to figure out RAW or jpg.

My biggest problem right now is getting screen calibration correct so what I see on the screen comes out on the print ! They never look the same :(

Was using a 200mm lens also, it was just that I could walk to within a metre of this owl. If you get too close it hisses like a cat and makes funning popping sounds with its tongue ! Flash in the eyes is what the birding photo fraternity like to see - they say it gives the bird life. They always recommend fill-in flash for that effect, even if its not really needed for lighting.

And for one of the other posters - I shoot both RAW & JPEG together, so I can mix and match happy snaps and serious images for later rework without having to remember which is which. This is not good for burst action shots though...

Who are you using to print, and what are you using to edit (machine wise - mac or other) Slowbee?

If you want the pics to match what's on the screen, you need to use a good printer, and have a v good screen. Studio 22 & ORMS are the best for prints, and I must be honest - Macs have the most neutral screen characteristics, which are only really matched by high end monitors on other machines...

It also varies hugely if you play with the screen's vibrance, sharpness, gamma setting etc etc. Mac is great out of the box. Others, you have to tinker a bit...

BUT - some printers still change settings before printing, and use sub-standard paper / inks. Which is why I say it's best to go for Studio 22 / ORMS. Plus, they are very well priced.

Forced to go on a photo walk with my brother-in-laws dad yesterday.

The old fella has taken up photography.

I actually thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Yesterday I spent ages at the shop trying to get the prints right.. You need someone who knows what they're doing.. I had these pics for a presentation to a client so i wasnt going to settle for anything less then the best.. Took about 30 tries to get it right.. Didnt pay for the wrong ones.. Just saying that not every shop knows what they're doing when it comes to high quality prints...

Made the presentations on my mac and the quality could not be matched on print..
